    You are thoughtful (people sleeping, protecting property), detail-oriented, transparent about the process, and a genius in execution. So well done and impressive. I found you while researching how to paint a mural on a shipping container (which I've never done before- a shipping container OR a mural! Thank God they're friends, yikess). Thank you!

    I'm curious about how you calculate how much paint you'll need. How much does a gallon of latex cover on a brick wall like that?

    i like your work, and you could first map it out in illustrator as the backgrounds could be slightly more involved. Your portraits are excellent.

    • @iamdetour

      I could be. one this about doing pieces this big/tall is that the slightest change in the design can add a weeks to the process of work and add significantly more costs especially when renting equipment. I'll do a video in the future about that. its one of those things that i run into when clients want to change elements in a design. its an important part of designing when designing for large murals

    Thank you for all the great info. I have learned a lot from your videos. I may have my first mural project coming up. My only question is when it comes to primer. I have seen different artists who did not use primer. Is this primarily due to time/finance? You should always use primer, correct?

  • @thebrianconran

    But HOW do you figure out how much of each color of paint you need?

    • @iamdetour
      @iamdetour  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I usually can eyeball the amount based on the design and area that i can see it may cover. i usually try not to over estimate because i hate having leftover bucket piant. it i need more i can easily buy more at the shop so its not too big of a deal. for jobs out of town i over estimate.

    Love this thank you so much for sharing! Do you use spray paint for all of it or do you use normal paint for the rest? I’m hoping to do an indoor mural and wondering what type of interior paint I should use. Thanks!

    • @iamdetour
      @iamdetour  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of the background and clothing on the individuals are latex house paint. Only the faces and hands did I use spray paint.

    Love this! Thank you for sharing. Curious at what point in your career did you feel like you needed GLI? Where do you get yours and are their different levels of insurance we should consider?
    Thank you!

    • @iamdetour
      @iamdetour  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got it when i started doing work with the city. Cities usually require insurance when they hire for art projects. Each policy is different because every art practice is going to be different. you can go to NEXT insurance to get an ideas of the costs for you.

    • @iamdetour
      @iamdetour  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used the rollers on this building. Brick is rough on brushes. rollers work well. the large and the small mini ones work well.

    Hey, I really appreciate this insight on the more professional aspects of the preparation process! As an artist with no formal education, this has been incredibly helpful. Are there any contract templates online that you would recommend, or would you be willing to share your own?

    • @iamdetour
      @iamdetour  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually work through the clients contract and adjust it where needed. thats because on a job like this the contract can be 20 pages long. there are a few sites online that have contracts available.

    This is such an awesome video, thank you so so much for sharing! Little question- at what wall height do you think a scissor lift/boom is needed?

    • @iamdetour
      @iamdetour  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say anything past 16' feet because most ladder go up to 16' comfortably. after that it becomes to dangerous/laborious going up and down with the style that i do.

    Great video. Very educational. I am preparing for a big exterior mural and this helps me a lot. My only question is: was all the paint solvent or oil based? Or is is latex or enamel? I was curios because I wanted to use an exterior latex enamel and wasn’t sure if the sherwin Williams graffiti ani graffiti coating would be compatible with that application.

    What software are you using to draw/sketch those designs in the preproduction?

  • @johnepsilongrafistika
    @johnepsilongrafistika ปีที่แล้ว

    2) also! in the between time(of 4 months of schedulling) you had any ''insurance'' that all your time/work-sketches & stuff/convrsations/etc etc etc was not in vane?if the Uni said at the end, u know mr detour we appriciate your time and work but we need to drop out! do you take a fee (upfront?) for all the back and forth conversations and stuf??

  • @StuSiney

    how to you price the artwork? per sq metre? i never know how much to charge for all my design

  • @johnepsilongrafistika
    @johnepsilongrafistika ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man, may i ask. 1) you and the client agrreed on a 70k price. for all the material(u needed about 10k), so you ask the client for 10k upfront to cover the massive expenses? or u cover it on your own budget and then you got fill the holes with the final price? (its either way the same, but i ask from the perspective of the upfront payment, and if the clients are ok with that)
