Barbie not caring about Ken was very accurate to me, because almost no girl, who played with her actually liked Ken, or had fun playing with him. it makes sense, that the movie Barbie wouldn’t be in love with him, because during play she usually wasn’t.
My barbie was in love with a g.i joe doll who was missing a leg

hey drew i love your opinion on the barbie movie and 100% respect it. i do wanna add in that mattel originally never wanted barbie to have a partner but consumers continued to complain that barbie was single so they were pretty much pushed to create ken. originally barbie was supposed to just be barbie, not barbie and ken. that’s why i really really love that they didn’t have barbie and ken as a thing in the movie. i don’t expect people to know this, i just have always been fascinated with barbie’s history :)))
Interesting fact! That should have been added to the story imo!
Oh yeah. And him being her boyfriend wouldnt even make sense in the movie lmfao itd go against the whole point
@@Chairsandstoolsi agree it would’ve changed a lot in the movie. but i see what drew was saying. i wish more movies involved empowering women while falling in love. i feel like it’s become two separate things when love is an extremely empowering thing. idk if that makes sense lmao
tbh i always loved and often would play with kens so the idea of only releasing a "female" doll seems dumb
@@summer5243 I don't wish this at all. More single ladies please. If you're looking for a movie with women falling in love, that's pretty much every woman's role in movies.
You always hear actors tell about how a plot was scratched because there was no romantic interest for the female lead. So to see more movies in which women are not defined by their role as a mother/nurturer/ romantic interest is fantastic.
There are plenty of romance movies out there, and romance is the top-selling genre in novels, so go please read one if you want to be entertained by romance. Everyone has their guilty pleasures.
But let's leave the empowering happy-and-single ladies alone. If you feel a movie is 'incomplete' when the woman DOESN'T fall in love, then this is absolutely part of the problem.

Man. Drew's comment about how pop culture arguments have replaced social movements is an amazingly succinct version of something that's been knocking around in my head for a while. There is a very real thing where if you say you didn't enjoy this particular movie or some famous pop diva's album, people get mad and say you must be racist or sexist. You can't be criticizing these things as ART, because people don't really see them as art. The Barbie movie = feminism. And this is true of both the right and left; the conservatives scream about "woke" pop culture and the left worships "woke" pop culture, and both sides totally lose track of the fact that this thing they're arguing about is a glossy, focus group-tested corporate product. I fall prey to it sometimes myself, and it's such a stupid waste of time. The world is on fire, and we're all arguing about movies based on plastic toys.
the gov and folks in power love that we are placing our rage here instead of at them
Y'all gotta read 'Capitalist Realism', it talks about how entertainment in modern times performs activism for us, leaving us passive. 🤡
"Anti-capitalism is widely disseminated in capitalism. Time after time, the villain in Hollywood films will turn out to be the ‘evil corporation’. Far from undermining capitalist realism, this gestural anti-capitalism actually reinforces it. Take Disney/ Pixar’s Wall-E (2008). The film shows an earth so despoiled that human beings are no longer capable of inhabiting it. We’re left in no doubt that consumer capitalism and corporations - or rather one mega-corporation, Buy n Large - is responsible for this depredation; and when we see eventually see the human beings in offworld exile, they are infantile and obese, interacting via screen interfaces, carried around in large motorized chairs, and supping indeterminate slop from cups. What we have here is a vision of control and communication much as Jean Baudrillard understood it, in which subjugation no longer takes the form of a subordination to an extrinsic spectacle, but rather invites us to interact and participate. It seems that the cinema audience is itself the object of this satire, which prompted some right wing observers to recoil in disgust, condemning Disney/Pixar for attacking its own audience. But this kind of irony feeds rather than challenges capitalist realism. A film like Wall-E exemplifies what Robert Pfaller has called ‘interpassivity’: the film performs our anti-capitalism for us, allowing us to continue to consume with impunity. The role of capitalist ideology is not to make an explicit case for something in the way that propaganda does, but to conceal the fact that the operations of capital do not depend on any sort of subjectively assumed belief. It is impossible to conceive of fascism or Stalinism without propaganda - but capitalism can proceed perfectly well, in some ways better, without anyone making a case for it. Žižek’s counsel here remains invaluable. ‘If the concept of ideology is the classic one in which the illusion is located in knowledge’, he argues, then today’s society must appear post-ideological: the prevailing ideology is that of cynicism; people no longer believe in ideological truth; they do not take ideological propositions seriously. The fundamental level of ideology, however, is not of an illusion masking the real state of things but that of an (unconscious) fantasy structuring our social reality itself. And at this level, we are of course far from being a post-ideological society. Cynical distance is just one way … to blind ourselves to the structural power of ideological fantasy: even if we do not take things seriously, even if we keep an ironical distance, we are still doing them.
Capitalist ideology in general, Žižek maintains, consists precisely in the overvaluing of belief - in the sense of inner subjective attitude - at the expense of the beliefs we exhibit and externalize in our behavior. So long as we believe (in our hearts) that capitalism is bad, we are free to continue to participate in capitalist exchange. According to Žižek, capitalism in general relies on this structure of disavowal. We believe that money is only a meaningless token of no intrinsic worth, yet we act as if it has a holy value. Moreover, this behavior precisely depends upon the prior disavowal - we are able to fetishize money in our actions only because we have already taken an ironic distance towards money in our heads."
@@AdmiringObserverRyes, this is a form of manipulation called “divide et impera” (divide & conquer).
Welcome to the real left I guess lol

oh my god finally someone who made their barbies crash their cars all the time. my favorite game as a kid was “drunk driving barbie” where i would tape barbie to her car and make it crash in various ways. there was also a brief drunk skydiving stint when i moved into my aunts house and she had stairs i could drop barbie from

the grave scene really was not explicitly scripted. in the behind the scenes interviews, the actor said that the writer/director had "strongly implied" where that scene should go, and it was a closed set, so he felt comfortable doing that. which is... wild

honestly so brave of you to say the Barbie movie was bad, as a man. I’m not even kidding, even as a woman I feel the air shift saying the Barbie movie sucked… people take it so personally. Something something social justice movements subsumed into capitalism and transformed into consumer identities something something
it’s been a long time since a film made me angry for wasting my time. IT’S NOT EVEN FUNNY. Not even “ok it’s not deep, it’s just fun,” (and that dumbass “it’s sexist to expect more from it”???) it’s literally not fun. It’s a bad movie! And I love Margot Robbie, I love Gina Rodriguez, I thought the actors generally were fine or even good- but everything else was terrible. I’d have a lot of critique for the basic writing if it were a student film, for it to have that budget and be THAT bad is a crime against humanity
What aspects do you feel made it terrible? I definitely felt like the social commentary was hamfisted, and didn’t give any one topic the attention it deserves, and so felt sort of shallow for sure in that regard. With my sense of humor I honestly found a fair amount of the jokes funny but with any comedy of course some things work for some and not for others. Just wondering what made you feel this way about it
@@baintreachaswhat is so bad about it? 💀 the set and costume design is fantastic, it’s entertaining, the social commentary is nuanced, yeah there’s a few kind of lame jokes in there but overall it was a refreshing movie in the midst of all the woke pandering bs that Hollywood has been pumping out lately
HI I'm a feminist woman and i genuinely fell asleep during barbie... I LOVE barbie's message but the execution was.. questionable. I hate when people assume I hate women when I say I didn't like barbie... it was legit just mid
@@f4gsforpele I really liked the barbie movie but the social commentary was everything except nuanced xD
Totally agree with your review on Barbie. Looked beautiful- nice message- Dialogue seems AI generated in most shows and movies these days.
I so agree about Barbie! It was too on the nose at times. It was super funny, but it did feel like they were being ingenuine like with the white savior example.
It’s in the nose because they are fucking Barbie’s. They don’t understand real world concepts. The movie shows how Barbie becomes human and Ken also starts taking on human concepts. They talk about these concepts like a two year old would because they are dolls.
As someone who studied feminism in college, I thought this too until I saw women crying because it was the first time they felt seen and were exposed to these ideas. Most of the population is MUCH more ignorant about feminism and equality than you'd think. I think as someone younger who grew up in cali it's incredibly easy for me to forget that misogyny is MUCH more prevalent and feminism much less accepted in the US than it seems and that I live in a bubble
I thought that whole monologue/speech bit where she’s like “you can’t be too thin but you can’t be too fat yadda yadda” was so lacklustre. Like fkn DUHHH DUHHH WE ALREADY KNEW THIS! Like girl…show don’t tell !
I love Barbie, but I know I am not the target audience of it. Most of the feminism stuff in that movie I already am aware of. But you'd be surprised how many people were moved by the monologue. I like the movie because it is a really fun watch and I laughed a lot, not really because of the feminist stuff. (Also the vibe of everyone girling up their fits just to watch the movie is amazing)

If Ken was Barbie’s boyfriend, he wouldn’t have had his character arc. He went with her because he wanted to be her accessory, but when she dismissed him he decided to change things and it got out of hand because of that pain he was feeling. Characters progress when they face hard feelings and I think it was a relatable feeling. I loved the Barbie movie but I agree some of the dialogue could’ve been subtler, and the Barbie poop dog did not have enough screen time

You have been a big part of my life and I have never once lost interest in the content you create, and I think that’s a big accomplishment as I usually get bored from youtubers after a while. But your content has always stuck around and spoken to me! Almost 10 years later and I am still as excited to sit down and watch your videos while i eat my burger king. I am nervous to watch this video as I am stubborn about my movie opinions, but I’m excited to know you’re a movie nerd as well! Keep creating drew, I will watch until you are an old man! Very excited for the video today, as I watch your videos every mornin and needed a new one to add to the drew rotation. Thanks drew!
also thank you for not liking salt burn
I’m so glad you liked the cameo Kennedy 😀
I loved this and please make more videos talking to us about movies
I just found your music through the description and your new album is awesome!
your humor and personality and opinions you share all work so well together in a way that has me enthralled in anything you chose to talk about. i rarely watch movies unless a friend insists on showing me one, but your passion for the art is so contagious that it’s genuinely inspiring me to check some of these out with a different perspective, or even walk to my local theater (by myself) to catch new releases that sound interesting. incredibly entertaining video, looking forward to watching the patreon bonus later :)❤
everything Drew says is so satisfying to hear it sounds like what my brain says 24/7
I loveeeee your takes 🥸 awesome video
so down for more movie content!! already love everything you post because i relate so hard, so adding my favorite thing in the world (movies) to listen to you talk about?? pls never wanted anything more
As a swiftie since 2012, I completely agree with everything you said. It has been so much pushing to buy stuff. I got tickets to that opening night of the movie and then it wasn’t the opening night anymore and they sold out of the merch. I also got tickets to the tour in 2015, 2018, and the recent one. Everything has increased in price exponentially! Still love lover tho
Drew, as always when I watch you, I feel like I'm listening to my own thoughts. Thank you for continuing to make videos!
i love drew so much he is such a bright soul
I really liked hearing your opinions on movies!! Your thoughts on Saltburn were very valid.
You're my favourite man with a ponytail on this planet, thanks for being here and sharing your thoughts and creativity. I've been listening to your cd on repeat since Christmas, truly thank you Drew 🐿️💜 🐢💙
