Clicked this video so fast once I saw Taylor.. I’m glad she talked about this. Players on the challenger tour talk about this sooooooo much and it’s heartbreaking how many don’t at least break even😢
That’s wild. Crazy how early and invisibly economics shapes our lives. How many opportunities that you would excel at were behind some paywall your parents couldn’t afford?
Fantastic interview. Taylor is so deserving! Having a tennis background I will put a price on it. If you have a child who shows talent you will spend between $75-100K a year. Top juniors follow the same grand slam cycle as professionals. There are numerous major international and National tournaments.
Thanks for giving me a new idea for fundraising. I am very petty, and now want to start raising money for OUR kids to get on that court and show ‘em what’s what. I live in a city with tennis courts EVERYWHERE….but it never occurred to me how much it costs for the training and competition. It sounds *intentionally* financially prohibitive….a lot like…..golf!
@@TheErikaShowYou may want to hook up with Stan Smith; he really is about seeing tennis elevated in black and underserved communities and he's a white dude! Props to him and you for DOING the thing! 🎉👏🤸💞🎾
Met her as a junior world number one at the OB...SO PROUD OF YOU TT...still see her as a TOP TEN WTA SINGLES PLAYER...BEST doubles player on the planet!!!
Logged in to give this video a 👍🏿but also to say that Taylor Townsend has so much magnetism and she’s just so much fun to watch on a tennis court! In the 1990s and early 00s, tennis, especially the WTA used to be really good at promoting tennis players who were engaging, now, not so much…we see the same players at the very top, a few of which seem to lack the personality that draws new fans. The tennis powers that be need to get the sport back on basic broadcast and FAST (streaming) so that more people can see a wider variety of tennis players and matches. Also, pay the doubles players better prize money and make their matches more available to watch/stream live and on replay.
Great interview n points. Good luck Taylor. Have a great year. Congrats on your AUSTRALIAN OPEN WIN. I watch your matches over n over. Thank you for representing. Hey Jemele. Keep doing u my fair lady.
She’s right. My daughter plays tennis and I want to see her grow more, which means she’ll need to add an additional day to her practices, and that’s an extra cost. She goes once a week to group practice and has 1 private lesson each week. Most young good players have 3 practices a week, from what I hear.
This was super interesting. Tennis is such a fun game but its' so expensive to get into it competitively even at the high school level. That's why table tennis and pickleball was invented :D
She was playing in Melbourne Australia this year 2025 Finals She won the Double Finals in Australian Open. Congratulations🏆🏆🏆. I live in Melbourne Australia....
Ive never seen a can of balls for 12 bones. But ive been playing for 45 years ..and she pretty on point. I e never paid more than 75 for a lesson but I can easily see a high level lesson in Fl cost that... Tennis fun but it can be expensive.. My son is spoiled. I can pay for all the costs np. But he does not have the passion. Growing up I didnt have the money til mich later. Go figure.
For sure can of balls are not $12 but they practice with so many balls so it still adds up. Court time is expensive even city run courts. Racquet cost she quoted is accurate too
I've seen very talented youngsters who don't have access to money. I've also seen families with talented kid(s) with good money coming in but the family is too busy putting money on image whether it's big house, car, designer clothes etc. Bottom line is money management/education. Kudos to Tennis Pro Taylor Townsend! Great, informative interview! #Goals
I used to have a friend that was trying to become a pro tennis player after he turned 33 and thought that he could be a Top 200 player despite ranking in the Top 1000, and - on the side - he tried practicing medicine before taking his board exams, having 2-3 places to live, flying from his tennis training home to Chicago, renting cars nearly every weekend, rehabbing, and eating sushi. He ended our friendship because of how I criticized him for how he was living his life while he was claiming that he wanted to be a pro. I am so happy that he is not friends with me anymore, and I do not care what he is doing with his life. He was not that good at tennis anyway.
The issue is professional tennis is open to everybody. If you can get to a qualifier and play your self in or enter a small tournament, you are considered a pro. But only the Top Pros, those in the Top 100 or great doubles players like Taylor, are making money. Taylor has made $6 million and she's only 28. She has never even sniffed at a Grand Slam singles titles so she's doing really well. And after tennis she can make money as a coach or commentator. She's had a better return on her investment than most people who go to college.
@blackblake3658 you done your homework thank you for the information I knew of her but not the back ground of her.Glad she loves tennis and struck with it minus the expenses she on the plus side.I wish J.Hill would do something on gymnastics there alot of black women in college on teams.I know they it cost a lot just to make it that far. Love your report to on TT
These are the stories we need to hear. Taylor has been through a lot. I respect her sooo much.

When I tell you I’ve never clicked so fast! I’m so glad she’s on your show. One of my favorite tennis players for the last 10 yrs!

The movie Challengers make references about the money/expenses in pro tennis.

Yeah I think the price of a can is a little exaggerated, but I’m wondering if they use different, more expensive balls for pros. 🤷🏾♂️
@@stefanossmitty3318 And court time. You can play at the USTA national campus for less than $40 an hour. And that's where pros play.
Maybe a pack of 2-3 cans...but that was the least of the expenses she listed and the rest were VERY realistic
I love the way Townsend explains things. You can tell she's well-versed on the topic.
She is a good speaker naturally...

Sad listening to this. So, it appears USTA does nothing to promote the sport but yet gets bragging rights for their success. Interesting!
USTA promotes the sport quite a bit.

$66, it must have been a doubles match for an ITF challenger tournament.
I've never seen a can of balls for 12 bucks. But tennis is still expensive.

Never heard of her until 2025 😮
You’re probably new to tennis then. She was the #1 Junior in the world and won Australian Open juniors.
Jemele practice make you strong and better Facts period 💕🙏
how much does it cost to become a fan though?
Its 2025.. Ur divisive overt racism is grotesque
Wait, where? It’s 2025 and we have a president who blamed a plane crash on DEI. 🤨
