Embarrassing. You can travel 600kph on a train in Japan (basically London to Edinburgh in less than an hour) and we can't even get a second high speed line open. Countries have had high speed rail since the 60's while we've dragged our heals for 60 years.

Not yet! Maglev is a few years from completion yet (2030 or so), but you have been able to from Tokyo to Hiroshima (800km) which is a little less than London-Aberdeen in under 4 hours for more than 30 years. You can buy a ticket just before departure without penalty, and it is clean and comfortable. Oh and food, beer, ice cream is delivered to your seat.

WE in the uk are sold on the idea we won WW2 and that we are great...but we're not. Everything we generally do, is more expensive, and slower...from trains, to slow wi-fi, to motorways, to health care, high taxes (when you include sales 20% sales tax), high national insurance, low pensions, low benefits, high rents...shall I go on.....

If you think for a moment and understand that trains must turn and stop once in a while because the train that stopping only on two ends will not pay for itself, then you would know that maximum speed did not mean much in real terms as it did not means much in your car outside German Autobahn in clear traffic when the speed limit is removed. Most of the UK did not have a population density of Japan nor is rail as heavily subsidized as in communist China to promote money burning projects that will never pay for themselves just to create jobs, so you can be glad to have at least what you have, cost of train per km grows exponentially with speed increase beyond a certain point, few would be able to afford Maglev ride in the UK unless it will be heavily subsidized by your money through taxes just so the ticket can be affordable for poor to have bit speedier ride...
The country made a big debt by handling this pandemic too slow, so you can't expect that everything will be roses and rainbows afterward, people that thought pandemic is a good time for a protests did not help either..

Absolutely not. Especially now with climate change eco fiendly ways of transport are the way of the future. The high speed train network was mainly designed to increase capacity on existing tracks, making more freight transport by rail possible too. Furher more, in Europe most short distance flights are becoming obsolete because high speed rail connections are just such a great alternative and are obviously a great help in reducing pollution.

Many high speed rail lines have proven that they can replace the plane, like Madrid-Barcelona, Amsterdam-Paris and many others. Not saying that this makes the HS2 a good idea by default, just that high speed rail can very much replace the plane and that thats a good thing because its just a so much more sustainable means of transportation.

With work from home surely HS2 is less viable. Its so expensive. The money is better put to use through other means such as rural broadband as a more efficient way of levelling up. Trains are a great investment but high speed rail is a white elephant. It works in Japan because you have very high density mega cities lined up all across the corridor. Even in China it is severely loss making in the tens of billions. Why not make regular fast rail between the towns and cities in the said regions? What use is funnelling people from economically depressed regions and vice versa in a WFH world?

    • @Himbros
      @Himbros 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This is just not true. A high-speed railway is about freight. It reduces the need for moving goods on roads.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

We don't live in a WFH world. Some do, most of us don't. It's also a blip because of the pandemic, things will and are going back to how they were before and will only become more crowded as populations increase over the next century. Also how do you get the physical stuff around the place if everyone expects it all to be delivered to their door? We still need freight infrastructure which is what HS2 opens up by taking all the high speed trains off the existing local and regional networks.

If they are not building past Birmingham then what is the point in HS2 , TO GIVE SOMETHING NEW THAT WE CURRENTLY DO NOT have .
Pity they didn't start construction in Leeds / Birmingham and work down instead .
The new faster 250 mph trains with compulsory in cab signalling needed to drive at faster speeds something that isn't fitted already , but it will put the expanding freight and slower services on the current WCML ECML routes and the new faster on the new .
The only PR BS way spin to achieve more capacity on the existing routes north of Birmingham is to split faster sections of track up between more signal blocks 1 train for 1 signal block set . Overall lower average speed through the more signals , including bi directional driving on the same track . Unless the govt really mean plough up more land either side of existing lines to add more seperate track , which would involve as much admin and spending as building it completely new to add capacity then it's all hype style and no substance !
No doubt the original GWR route from London Paddington to Penzance in 1840s build from the very beginning , had the same cost worries and lack of future success concerns being all new transport then like HS2 but still ploughed ahead and we couldn't imagine a UK without that and it's other previous routes even the ECML fourth bridge the Welsh Severn tunnel line too !
Typical of all government can't think plan next decades plus or work across party lines same with the NHS fundings etc ! Ps if people really fell for the 20min journey saving only you won't get it when your overpriced HS2 train joins the crowded routes existing north of Brum !
Ps The Class 67 diesel loco and the original HST 125s were designed for 140moh running too in the 1970s to what we have faster than today also .

Why do the US and many Western countries
    have no high-speed trains?
Have big car and oil companies paid off our politicians
to keep the trains from expanding
and was it intended for train companies to FAIL completely?
US train company Amtrak’s chronic delays are costing millions of dollars.
    It’s spending more on fuel,
labour and even maintaining extra locomotives and rail cars
than it needs as a result of poor on-time performance.
Even if they add more than 50 new routes
they’re still one our two hours SLOWER than a car.
The cost for UK HS2 high-speed-train project
has ballooned from 30 billion to over 120 billion.
    To reduce the production cost
they're cutting certain sections of the HS2 tracks
which means they're going to use the EXISTING TRACKS
the HS2 trains will travel on the same speed
    as the existing trains
or maybe just 5 to 10 minutes faster.
    Paying over 120 billion
    just for 10 minutes faster.
    It's not even high-speed trains
like the ones China are building around the world.
Could it be deliberate by these companies
that have more to gain from the consumers
buying cars and the petrol to run them
dealing with all the parties involved,
politics and people with their HANDS IN THE POT
and not to mention the high price
to buy the land and labour costs are astronomical?
And why has the US a terrible healthcare system,
    low internet speed
    more mass shootings,
fighting unpopular, endless and costly wars in other countries
    air and water pollution
    no high-speed trains
    bad food quality
    hormones in beef and pork
genetically modified crops, fruits and vegetables
    chlorinated chicken
overprocessed convenience food full of chemicals?
    Aren’t powerful companies and banks
paying off governments in the West
and how much these companies CONTROL and RUN our governments?
China's BRI built high-speed trains in Asia and around the world.
    But we’re expected to believe
China and Russia are the threat for the world
the US intends to defend the "rules-based order"
that Russia and China are posing a challenge to.

People made ill and died. Wildlife too. NDA'S signed to keep people quiet. Rulings made against HS2. More to come it's expected. It's overpriced £100-200 Billion, Channel tunnel was £5.9bn. Where do you get the idea of HS" track alignment being 2 miles wide Anne Carter, it will be about 50 foot wide and who are going to kill all these people and animals, definitely not HS2 and as a Brummie 30 mins faster than a train at the moment is a plus as on a day return journey it will be an hour saved as the time from Birmingham New Street to London Euston at the moment is 90 mins, from Birmingham Snow hill to London Marylebone is 2 hours, so yes it will be a massive time saver for us Brummies at least, so sorry to disappoint you.

The Tories have looked at the opinion polls, which shows that most northerners would still vote Tory in the next election anyway and decided they can withdraw their bribe, which they never really intended to honour in the first place, and save themselves a lot of money to divert to the Blue Wall constituencies instead. However, it completely undermines the entire HS2 and HS3 projects. But, after all, who cares anyway? So goes government thinking. All that matters are votes and how to con the public into supplying them at election time so the Tories can get their snouts in the trough.
