  • “The Circle of Life in the Rhodope Mountains”, by Emmanuel Rondeau, tells the hopeful story of rewilding in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria.
In collaboration with Rewilding Europe and local partners, the Rewilding Rhodopes team has been working for many years to restore the so-called "circle of life" in the Rhodopes Mountains rewilding landscape in Bulgaria. Rewilding efforts have seen populations of keystone herbivores such as red and fallow deer, European bison and wild horses reintroduced and restocked, with benefits for local populations of carnivores, such as wolves, and scavengers, such as vultures.
Such efforts, and the positive impact they are having on both wild nature and local communities, are captured in this 12-minute film by award-winning French filmmaker Emmanuel Rondeau. The film, made possible by Hogan Lovells, features interviews with representatives of Rewilding Rhodopes and Rewilding Europe, as well as landscape residents.

We need a much longer video about the region and its animals 😍. Horses, deer, wolfs, vultures, bisons.

Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm about this amazing region. We agree there is much more to show and tell about this wonderful landscape, the wildlife and the work of the team, but hope this is at least a captivating story to spark interest for many people! We do have a Rhodope Mountains playlist on our channel in case you want to see a bit more or dive a bit deeper into some topics. ;)

I hope this project will remain a success. In Germany they are killing the Bisons & wolves they reintruduced again because forest owners & farmers are complaining

Unfortunately, these are very sad and concerning decisions we see happening in more countries across Europe. Luckily, here, the story of wildlife comeback is a hopeful one, where the comeback of iconic species like the bison gives people reason to feel proud again of the landscape they're living. The work of the team doesn't come without challenges here too, of course, but at least we hope that stories like this one can boost the message that we need to welcome wildlife back into our landscapes!

Thanks for this wonderful video. I have a house in the Veliko Tărnovo region and love the nature there. I will definitely visit this rewilding site in the Rhodope region. My Bulgarian language skills are pretty poor, was there any subtitles for the speech when it was in Bulgarian?

Yes, the video subtitles translate the Bulgarian into English

Is there any chance the Bison herd may cross into Greece? Or are they restricted where they roam? I m afraid they will be hunted and killed here.
