Honestly, as EDM producer trying to turn Film Composer this helps a LOT. Usually I just grab a bassline, have a few notes that I know work, use a simple melody that repeats throughout, and add more stuff. Here it's like "do I start with a bass first to maybe ground myself a bit more, or think of a melody, or would this scene benefit from a character motif? (when I grab some random scenes to practice scoring on)".
2 minutes of music a day, good to hear that. I was already having self-doubts when a music supervisor recently told me about a composer who supposedly composes 15 minutes of music a day. I didn't want to get into a discussion and just thought, sure, probably a 15-minute pedal tone with a four-bar piano loop. Thanks for this video, Anne.
I truly appreciate you sharing this, thank you! This is exactly what I need right now🙏 Ein kleines Augenzwinkern: For me as an 80's kid the brass iin 24:13 is an hommage to the intro of "We Are the World" (probably Quincy's arrangement)😊
What an amazing video Anne! So kind of you to share this. This was literally one of the „funnest“ things I have ever done in my life. The writing and the Abbey Road Session with you was an absolute blast!! Thanks again for having me on board 🙌🏻.
Thank you very much for your time and dedication to show us how a professional like you creates music for movies, your music is beautiful, interesting, exciting, thank you very much again for your generosity, you deserve a looooong of coffees, for now I'll send you a couple hahahahahaha
I loved the video, really insightful! I've got a couple of questions if you don't mind: 1) I've noticed that the automation (mainly cc1 and 11) in this mockup is relatively less detailed than the one in your "Lord Of The Rings" mockups. Is that because you knew this cue was going to be recorded and hence it didn't need that level of detail? was it because of time constraints? 2) When you go from piano sketch to mockup, is it strictly a matter of copy and paste midi notes (plus the whole production side of things of course)? or you add tiny motifs and elements here and there to round up the arrangement? Congrats for your success! Huge thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!💪
Glad you enjoyed it! Second part is already in the making and just a few days away. It just takes some time to get all the material cleared by the studios.
Thank you for the possibility of an insight. Some of your remarks are really precious e.g. a signature change is better then tempo change or on hiding the signature change at least a bar before a new segment begins. I will follow them.
I am immensely grateful for your videos! Do you know many composers who use guitar instead of piano for mock ups? I only play guitar and I always feel at a disadvantage in terms of the time I spend reconstructing everything in midi using a pencil.
I've just finally caught up with this video. There is so much useful information here about the process in general, and the details of the process you actually went through in this particular case. You explain the points clearly, and explain why you did what you did - and whether you are happy with it or not. Thank you for generosity and hard work. Now, go and get many more gigs so you don't have time for this! (If you want.)
What a great way to learn how to get your work order from zero to hero. Logical steps and logical thought processes to help the creative mind Express music. Thank you so much for this video as I look forward to the next one.
Thanks, as always, Anne-Katrhin, for imparting such knowledge and wisdom. This is absolutely educational, so much to take away, already. I just cannot wait for part 2!
Please please please make a video about scoring a material itself, i'm really struggling with organisation of this process, what to do first what to do last, how to store the material correctly to use it on next steps, you know)
Removing most of the bottom end of the orchestra during the "jump" sequence accentuated the visuals of the ground being removed from under their feet. Breathtaking and brilliant decision from you. Another great tutorial! Thank you so much!
Wowowow this is soooooo cool 😎 I think honestly, this video is even more intense than the action scene. Really the possibilities are limitless. My DAW says it wants to play hehe
I became you fan. You are so honest with you stuff, other youtubers hide up so much their composing, their libraries and stuff. Congrats. BTW did you played the piano while skeching or did you write the midi by hand? tks for the content.
Amazing!!!! When you said "the film is on Netflix" I had to pause the video, an went watching the whole film and then returned after to see the rest of this video :-) I think that your music was really perfect for the film and enhanced a lot the movie that is per se really quite enjoyable and was a pleasure to watch and hear: the contrasts between the emotional and the tension moments of your music are really wonderful and the energy and expressiveness of your themes and scoring are very powerful. After it I enjoined even more your explanation. Thank you very much for this in depth behind the scenes videos: very helpful and inspiring! Also very interesting to see how to create the material and how to use and expand it, and the decisions how to orchestrate the piano sketches!!! Wunderbar!
Dern.........You have such a gift for teaching. So many great lessons here........ and great music!!!!!!!! (Meter shifts over tempo shifts was an eye-opener for me) I will unashamedly copy many of your work flow techniques and am grateful always to you for sharing. Wish you a great weekend. Going to Netflix now...............got my popcorn. 🙏🏾🌞
Oh, this is SO good, Anne-Kathrin! Thanks for another awesome video. And lol at the reference to people who write 6 minutes a day. I think I know exactly who you're talking about. I used to follow this dude who apparently does 20 films a year. If only we were all so lucky! 😏😂
What a stunning composition the amount of work hear is a ton load your ear for counter melody is superb Anne love the brass arrangement very regal fantastic best wishes from UK England Phil 👍great video
really appreciate this walkthru of your approach! "Meter vs Tempo" is something I struggle with, but you've made it more clear why these choices matter. I'm stunned to see how similarly we use Cubase (this could be driven by workflow) but I wish you'd show the synthrack on the right panel sometimes. THANK YOU!!
A real "how to go about film cues" máster class. What else could I say but thank you, Anne. Thank you for sharing this excellent and helpful video. It merges composing music procces, production, scoring, orchestration point of view, etc.. Thank you..!!!
Great great stuff! I would really love you to make a video explaining all these pre production things you are talking about (the theme, a counter theme, ostinattos, the sounds you choose and why, how you come up with a melody and develop it, etc) Those "first 10 days" as you put it are very very interesting for me (even more than the rest of the work). Thank you very much Anne for these videos. All the best. Cheers from Argentina.

Thank you sooo much for these videos ! I figuered out few of these advises by myself through practicing on projects and through questionning my workflow when i got stuck on these projects. That's why it takes many time to get a strong workflow. So THIS serie and your other videos in general are a blessing and it contains so many tips that the gain of time is incredible. Thank you again for sharing this !
Fantastic! Took me about four 'listens' to make my way through this, but it was awesome and thank you for sharing and teaching. You made something that seemed impossible at least a bit more understandable for me.
This is so insightful! "I can live with one bar I'm not happy with....." love that! Showing this process is a game changer for an inspiring composer as myself. I can write music for different genres all day long; however, the film music composition process is on a different level on the music production spectrum. Again thank you Anne! Coffee on me also....
Danke, Anne! Das klingt immer, als wäre die richtige Musik am richtigen Platz. Die "transitions" bilden da übrigens keine Ausnahme. Deine Organisation- es ist die pure Freude, da zuzuschauen. Hav det sjovt!
Wow...its fantastic..wonder why there are a lot of time signature changes...and can i know what techniques u used for modulation and expressions dynamics..i saw when one dynamic is static u change the other..and sometimes u change the both..
Could you explain the approval process you were working with, do you send a sketch first before the full mock up, Spending a few days on a mock up that doesn’t capture the mood, work for the producer for that scene would lead to rework , and time is of the essence when on a contract 🎸
Your template sounds really well mixed. The strings and brass sound a heck of a lot better than they do out of the box. Could you do a video on how you either mix your template, or mix the mockup once it's done?
Thank you for sharing your hard earned experience and knowledge with us 😊 I've always thought the 2 - 3 minute if music a day including mockup sounded crazy, as I always use more time than that in scoring scenes for competitions (although that is probably partly because of inexperience). This process with first making themes or a suite to the movie to have the base material and themes already in place to work out from makes me understand how this great workspeed is possible. Also piano sketching makes a lot of sense and is how I scored the last two competitions I did, and it was a lot faster than writing directly to orchestration which I've tried before😊 You always make very clear and concise videos, and so glad you take your time to share with us, thanks!
This is great! Can’t wait for the next one! I agree that the piano sketch is crucial in these complex cues with full blown orchestra and choir. I’ve learned this the hard way! Haha! Cheers!
Thank you so much Anne-Kathryn… I really appreciate the way you approach orchestration . I am learning a lot watching you work and I use your expertise to help me become a better musician.

@@AnneKathrinDernComposer I would like to know how many days it took you to produce such a fab score on your PC ( whole film score not including recording sessions. )
