James did visit Oliver in jail! Several times! And each time James begged Oliver to let him confess but Oliver refused. After the last time he visited him it is hinted that thats when he committed.

@@moeblackx hate to contradict (loved this recap so much!!), but James actually did go back and visit. See this paragraph from Act V Scene VII:
“(I don’t think he ever forgave me. After my incarceration he visited often, at first. Every time he came he asked me to let him make things right. Every time, I refused. I knew by then that I would survive my time in prison, quietly counting down the days until all my sins had been atoned for. But his was a softer soul, sunk in sin to the hilt, and I wasn’t sure he would. Every time he took my refusal a little bit harder. The very last time he came was six years after my conviction, six months since I’d seen him. He looked older, ill, exhausted. “Oliver, I’m begging you,” he said. “I can’t do this anymore.” When I refused again, he pulled my hand across the table, kissed it, and turned to leave. I asked where he was going and he said, “Hell. Del Norte. Nowhere. I don’t know.”)”
When Pip tells Oliver that James is supposedly dead, she says, “Why do you think he stopped visiting?” 💔 (of course, given the ending, we have to consider a different reason)

This book was everything I wanted The Secret History to be, and it’s one of my favourites of all time. The way the Shakespeare plays reflect real life, the convoluted relationships between the characters, *the ending!* damn it’s so good
i definitely liked the fact that ml rio came out and said a lot of things that donna danced around! although i do recognize that ml rio has a lot of privilege publishing in 2017 vs 1993 like donna

@_dont_mind_me funny, for me this book felt like a mid fanfic written after being inspired by the secret history. Much less detailed, less nuanced, so flat. I always appreciate the journey of reading, the writing and creative decisions, the plot - much less important for me 😆 so TSH was a perfect book for me
The way Richard is allowed to bully and physically endangers pp without any real disciplinary consequences is scary af.

I just finished the book and I’m sure that Richard got casted in the Halloween play, he was McDuff and he did an off-stage voice (sorry I’m not english I don’t know how to explain it)
Also, James did go to prison to visit Oliver and beg him to retire his confession. He just stopped after a while.
I truly don’t understand how these videos don’t get more interaction. I love your entire channel but the book ones devour every time

My power went out yesterday, and to keep me entertained through the dark, snowy afternoon and night, I watched your Secret History video by candlelight-super-cosy experience (despite the dark subject matter). 😅 Thanks for helping me through the dark times, girlie! Binging through all your book videos now that my power’s back and the phone is recharged.
Maybe that means I‘m stupid but I just understood this one so much better than secret history, it also felt much faster paced which I like a lot more

I cannot believe you did not enjoy IWWV as much as I hoped you would have. I actually prefer it to The Secret History.
i found it entertaining!! i also loved the mood and tone ml rio set but i think it was underdeveloped in a lot of ways 😭 i can definitely see why people would prefer it tho!! i think it’d be an amazing tv adaptation

I started this book after watching Salt Burn and I pictured Oliver as Felix and James as Oliver from the movie, made me cry 10x harder lol:'(

He did, he visited a few times, each time asking for permission to take the blame. After the final attempt, James couldn’t bear it anymore and stopped visiting. And, in my imagination anyways, it is after that final attempt that he committed. I genuinely don’t believe he’s alive, despite the hint and context of the cited play. Simply because, as stated earlier in the book, anything can be justified if it’s poetic enough. I think citing that play was his way of justifying taking his life and somehow Oliver know he’s out there, metaphorically speaking.

I hope you many more dark academia books in this same format. I loved your TSH one, and am watching this one now. IWWV was good, but not quite 5 stars for me. I lovvedd the audiobook though, made Shakespeare that much more palpable and felt more like a play.
would love too! babel is a bit complex to put in this format but I'd be open to doing other books!!

the way i just finished the book today. i think by the end i was like is it because i don't give af about Shakespeare the way these characters do and that's why i didn't enjoy as much or what....IDK I HAD a hard time being invested in the plot

I still hold onto my opinion that "the lake of dead languages" is still one of the best dark academia books besides the secret history and is far better than if we were liars

A quick question! Is this book “enjoyable” for someone who doesn’t know much abt shakespeare?? Iwwv is on my tbr but i haven’t read it bcs it kinda intimidate me lol
I just finished the book today and had no real experiences with Shakespeare before but I still really enjoyed the story!! I gotta admit it was sometimes a bit confusing because it's actually important what kind of role each character gets and I couldn't really grasp the meaning of the characters in Shakespeare but you get an idea who's the villain/hero through the reactions in the story. So I'd actually recommend reading it!!
It’s definitely still enjoyable and engaging but I have to say, having a base knowledge of the plays they do (Macbeth, Julius Cesar, King Lear) really enhances the experience because the events of the plays reflect the events that happen in real life
same!! I always feel like whenever you read Shakespeare you have to put a specific type of reading cap on so its de-immersive to have it woven throughout a modern mystery/thriller unless you're super aware of what each reference means!
