    "To be underestimated is an incredible gift." One of my favorite Jack lines. It fits him very well of course, but it also reminds me a lot of something Max said back in s2, about how for people like herself "power works best when it is least perceived." It's in different contexts, but both of them are characters who often rely on the way people underestimate them in order to manipulate situations/people to their advantage. There are a number of ways in which Jack and Max are similar, especially when it comes to their intelligence. (Also, I think that tells us that Anne has a little bit of a type haha: very smart people who use the way they are perceived to their advantage. As someone who is also probably underestimated a lot, it makes sense that Anne would be attracted to that kind of quality in someone).

      I don't think those characters are similar in any way. Jack is all about legacy, which by it's definition means he's not hidden. As for Max, intelligence is a bit of an overreach. Don't get me wrong, I like the character but what you are describing is just growth. She learnt, grew and changed. That's just experience not so much high intelligence. Right now as she said "I am the street" ....her power is very much perceived by everyone. She hasn't yet learnt to operate from the shadows, that is to come obviously.

      @@gemelwalters2942 I mean they're not the exact same and have different motivations, but the show intentionally points out the ways in which they are similar all the time. The actors even talked about it in interviews, that that's part of why their interactions with each other can be so fraught. The ways they are different and the ways they are similar cause friction between them.

      I agree because Ann was and is in my top 3, sometimes flips between top 2 and 3, favourite character in this series. And there is a scene that involves her asking Jack for something and for him to give it her. It reminded me of this quote and the importance of not and the reason why she was asking for it.

    Vane is my favourite. Simple, anti-materialistic, uncompromising and honest. The love he had for Eleanor was as honest as it could get. He was willing to do anything for her, even after she had already shoved him aside multiple times. Even after her initial betrayal, he was willing to forgive her and work it out together. A man who can put himself in a vunerable position because he refuses to stop loving someone, thát is a man who I can respect. He also has no real interest in money or fame, but rather a more simple and also more precious thing: freedom. He is increadibly steadfast in his motives which makes him such a good character.

    Love Jack slowly gaining Teach’s respect in this episode.
    Also love Flint’s slow realization that Silver may have become more powerful/feared than himself in their conversations.

    Flint and Silver's fireside chat weaved throughout the episode is magical. One of the best uses of "flashbacks" to set the current mood and propel the story forward
    And I'm sure you've been told but the actress who plays Anne Bonny is royalty. Her real name is Lady Clara Elizabeth Iris Paget (Clara Paget in the show) and she isn't all dirty and covered by a hat this episode, of course she is gorgeous

    'Long John Silver' originally was thought to come from the real pirate's height, that his 'johns' (pants) were long because he was tall. It was mentioned here comparing it to John the Giant too, but yeah you could also say it's because he has a long memory.

    • @nataliestclair6176
      @nataliestclair6176 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      The book Treasure Island never does give an explanation of how John Silver got his nickname, but it was assumed becuase of his height. He is described as being tall and strong despite his missing leg, which in the book Treasure Island was missing up to his hip and not his knee. Oh and he had a parrot on his shoulder named Captian Flint.
      In the book Treasure Island, Silver claims to be the only man that Capt. Flint feared.
      Silver claimed to have lost his leg while serving on the Royal Navy under Captian Edward Hawke.
      I like the change of his nick name being from his threatening speech about his long memory.

      @@nataliestclair6176 I love how Black Sails danced around real history with this series and subverted some previously known stories like that one. Personally the threat of his long memory to remember those who turned on them was such a better story than him just being tall like a giant.

      @@cade3546 yes, and the book Treasure Island never said it was due to his height and people just assumed, so there is no breaking of canon of Treasure Island lore.

    If I had to rank them:
    1. Flint
    2. Eleanor
    3. Jack & Anne
    4. Silver
    5. Vane
    I put Anne and Jack together as 1. They are inseparable Afterall. Anne didn't have a huge story but Jack's story is also tied closely to her so I always view theirs as a single story.

    One of the best season ending quotes and when billy is talking about mad men, tyrants, and rich men the black sails show the physical representation of who did what. The only speech to beat this and 2x10 speech is the one in 4x10.

    If anyone who reads or knows about the black spot, it plays a part in Treasure Island! LOTS of irony here!! For my Top 5 (in no particular order) I have Flint, John, Jack and Ann together, Vane, and Max. I don't hate Eleanor, but I hate too many of her choices.

    It's funny that they now decided Vane speaks for Eleanor and everything he believed is what Eleanor believed. Instead of the very obvious fact that Vane did not know Eleanor very well, he knew her as a child and was still holding onto that naive view of her and the world. Eleanor can think for herself....she has shown what she wants, that's why she was working with Flint in season 1 and not Vane. We can tell what she wanted by her actions not what someone says she wants. You've effectively decided the character has no agency because Vane told you he knows what she wants. Even when Rogers says he agrees with the choice she made you're still saying she doesn't know what she wants. He agreed because it was the right choice, remember they were planning to rescue Vane. Eleanor knows how the pirates operate so she checkmate them before that could happen, it was the right choice....just not for the pirates.

    • @Skeezer66
      @Skeezer66 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're missing that, not only do they have Eleanor as one of their top 5, it's because they respect her choices and actions, even if they don't agree. It was looking like she was stepping back from everything to let Rogers lead, but she is the one who made the big decisions that led to so much that happens. I do agree that Vane's emotional connection to her blinded him from seeing her completely, which does lead to his death.

    • @gemelwalters2942
      @gemelwalters2942 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Skeezer66 yes however they're still insisting that she doesn't believe what she's saying. To the point where they're confused by Roger's response, because they felt Eleanor was acting irrational...again on Vanes words. They thought Rogers would react badly to that because they're still thinking Vane was right. In reality she's actually being quite rational and had she not acted Vane would likely be freed.
      She was also right about not removing his body, which they again questioned because "she doesn't believe what she's saying". The one phrase Eleanor said to Vane should have made her position clear. After he told her about her father she told Vane he doesn't understand. I think they overlooked that crucial conversation because they still believe Vane understood Eleanor and he didn't. He didn't understand that even though her father was a horrible person, he was still important to her. And when she said she's leaving Vane behind in that room and moving on from him she has done just that.

    • @Skeezer66
      @Skeezer66 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gemelwalters2942 I didn't hear it that way, regarding their disbelief in Eleanor. They agreed she did what she did made sense from her point of view, but were surprised Woodes would agree because of the potential (and coming) unrest it would cause. They did understand all the things you say they didn't, but the larger picture is, hanging Vane and leaving him there WILL cause trouble on "the street". It's what Max was worried about and what Billy is going to exploit. That's just following along with where the plot is going.
