- Hey guys! In this video, I will be demonstrating how to use shodan for information gathering and reconnaissance in penetration tests. Shodan is a search engine that lets the user find specific types of computers connected to the internet using a variety of filters.

You get a key when you register for a shodan account. You're redirected to the API key when you first login. Then you add it in metasploit using the usual set command

After setting the API key I'm getting the following error. I've reset the key a couple of times in my shodan account but still getting this when running in metasploit. Any ideas?
Auxiliary aborted due to failure: bad-config: 401 Unauthorized. Your SHODAN_APIKEY is invalid
Found the issue. You first need to install the shodan CLI from your python directory :
python /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/easy_install.py shodan
Next you need to initialize the key
shodan init 'api_key'
