      Not aggressive, snakes get defensive. Retics are honestly one of the best, and easiest snakes. They are generally pretty tame and calm from birth. As long as you keep up on husbandry, feeding, and handle them calmly and frequently, they will be amazing.

    I have long wanted a retic but feel that a boa (6-8 ft)is as big as I can go space-wise. My boa was puppy dog tame as a baby and juvenile. She was always food aggressive but was able to distinguish my hand from a prey item until she couldn’t. I had to tap train her to get her reconditioned. Now she knows that a tap or rub means handling time. Even if your snake is very docile as a baby, things can change. I highly recommend tap training with any large constrictor. Nice video!

    I find that large snakes have a bad wrap. Sure they can pack a punch but they won't throw that punch so to speak if you do things right and treat them with respect as respect is a two way streak. My largest snake is an 8ft boa constrictor and I'm gentle, respectful and careful with her and she is just as chill and friendly as my royal python. Being in a position in life to be able to own and work with snakes is a blessing and you'll learn that you can earn the trust and respect of any snake if you do things right.

  • @MintyFarts

    when it comes to the main danger of having a retic, it was always suggested to me it was accidental squeezing of say the neck or something, and never intentional. I can understand that as I have some ball pythons that tend to hang on a bit tight if I'm walking or is they get chilly or shy or are reaching for something etc
    I think it is still a good idea to have another person just in case, but I think a lot of ppl think of over dramatized ideas of large snakes from movies and such where they are fictitiously aggressive and violent.

    I'll never get a retic but they are cool. If your snake is getting too chunky you can build her an obstacle course with poles, ropes, and stuff. They seem to like climbing things. You give them enrichment and they're burning off calories. Then you don't have to mess with the diet so much.

    I've been planning to get a hatchling reticulated so that I can get it used to being handled from a very young age. But I was wondering if my tank/space for it would be ok for it! I have a 55 gallon tank with regulated heat, temperature, and lots of plant growth and hides. I also plan to have the snake able to relatively free roam my room other then when I'm sleeping at which time it would be placed inside my glassed off section of my room(12×8×6ft). I have multiple things for the snake to climb and bask on along my walls. And I have rats and mice and rabbits and chickens that I breed for both human food, sales, and snake food for when I get the snake. I know that they can grow fast and get massive when cared for right. And I do fully intend to have a full room for the snake by the time it hits 3ft of length. And I have that full room being set into motion on being built. But I simply want to be able to know and make sure if the sizing I have and the amount of space would be good for a hatchling as it grows

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you're covering your basis. Hatchling are pretty easy and so long as they get heat-humidity-hides they are good, although they will outgrow enclosures pretty quick. I prefer pvc enclosures but I even have one in an exoterra quarantine for now till I get her moved to a 4ft pvc, which she will them grow out of pretty quick. Free roaming can be great for them if the room is snakeproofed and temps are controlled and there's nothing that can hurt it. There's just a lot of variables, the specific animals demeanor, how things are set up, ect. Sounds like ya have a great plan but remember that sometimes the things done to make us feel better don't always make the snake feel better so we need to see where their comfort level is and tweak our setups to fit that.

    This is exactly what I need to do with Uluru, my 2-year-old spotted python. I'm doing hook training and I need him to remember that he gets to dictate most of the terms on when he wants to come out, and that if I rub his back, that's a positive signal that he gets to come out and explore. He also needs to know he will get doused with warm water if he bites me (the best way to make him let go). I will also be beginning target training with him to make him better understand when I'm giving him food. It's good practice for owning a super dwarf retic and/or a woma python, as they are a LOT more food-motivated.

    hi Tim.....been watching your videos for a year now, since i got my female sunfire retic. I last had a retic 20 yrs ago, a nice yellowhead , at about 12 feet and 2 years old i decided to give him 'hopefully" a better life with a person who was doing educational shows in new york state. Now 20 years latter, after getting into breeding threatened turtle species ...n.a. spotteds and ali-snappers, i decided to get a female retic. I got a question maybe you can answer. It seems evertime i take her out of her enclosure and run her through my hands , i feel "gas pockets" and gurrguling noises coming from her stomach and intestines. i never noticed that with my retic years ago. She is looking a little thick , maybe im feeding her too much? shes on a every 4 day feed of one xlarge rat. Im trying to start a every 5 day feed but shes "telling" me no......thanks.

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's awesome, I know there's been a lot of turtle discussion and no doubt captive breeding programs are going to ultimately go a long ways towards keeping them around! I will notice some gastric activity in mine if I handle within a few days of feeding, there's a lot of stuff breaking down in there. I know there's some different trains of thought with feeding, but my younger ones I feed 10% their bodyweight every 7-10 days, older animals I'll feed 10-15% every 2-4 weeks, sometimes longer based on the meals size. My male refused over 5 months one year then just picked back up like nothing happened. I think it's easier to overfeed than underfeed with big snakes...of course we don't want to do either but I would probably spread the meals out just a bit.

  • @iratommer4958

    Everything you say is absolutely true. However, unless it's a super dwarf, or even a dwarf, if it lives it WILL get too big for the average person out there to handle. Then the snake is let go into the wilderness and dies of cold or becomes our worst enemy as another giant in the everglades. Too many of the newcomers think when it gets too
    big they'll give it to a zoo, and we know that the zoos generally won't take them. That being said, I'm looking for a super dwarf. I live in Florida and can't buy across state lines. Why don't you guys all get together and form an association so no matter what retic a customer wants you can refer him/her to a breeder in their state. EVERYBODY WINS. Would appreciate your thoughts.

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the remarks, you're absolutely right in many respects. Giant snakes definitely are not for everyone and we definitely need 2 people or more once they get 13-20+ ft. That being said, ive often handled 16-22 ft retics alone (with someone there for backup of course). A well socialized snake can be managed by one competent handler without much difficulty.
      I know the unlawful release of reptile is a much bigger problem than it is in other parts if the world where they can't survive, but the reptile community is as a whole really does a great job of keeping our animals in good hands. I know if I went into most snake groups right now and said "please take my 15 ft retic" I would have immediate responses from good keepers so there's never any need for anyone to just release an animal if they are willing to put in even minimal effort to rehome it.
