  • Welcome to our latest adventure in the heart of Italy - Bologna! In this video, my husband and I take you on a mouth-watering journey through the vibrant streets of Bologna, discovering its incredible street food scene. Bologna, often hailed as the gastronomic capital of Italy, is a city that lives and breathes food, and today, we’re diving into its delicious offerings.
First up, we couldn't resist starting our day with a classic Bolognese breakfast. We head to a local café for a freshly baked cornetto, a delightful Italian croissant filled with creamy custard or rich chocolate. Paired with a perfectly brewed cappuccino, it’s the ideal way to kickstart our foodie adventure.
Our next stop is the bustling Mercato di Mezzo, one of Bologna’s most famous food markets. As we wander through the market’s narrow aisles, the aroma of freshly baked bread and sizzling meats fills the air. Here, we sample some of Bologna’s most iconic street foods. We try piadina, a traditional Italian flatbread stuffed with a variety of delicious fillings like prosciutto, mozzarella, and fresh arugula. It's a simple yet incredibly satisfying dish that perfectly captures the essence of Italian street food.
No trip to Bologna would be complete without trying the legendary mortadella. This finely minced pork sausage, speckled with cubes of pork fat and seasoned with spices, is a true Bolognese specialty. We stop by a local vendor and savor thin slices of this delicacy, enjoying its rich and slightly spicy flavor. The mortadella is often served with tigelle, small round breads that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The combination is absolutely divine!
As we continue our culinary journey, we stumble upon a hidden gem - a tiny street food stall selling crescentine. These are fried dough squares that are light, airy, and utterly addictive. We watch as the vendor expertly fries them to golden perfection, then stuffs them with various fillings like creamy squacquerone cheese, flavorful salami, and tangy pickled vegetables. Each bite is a burst of flavor and texture, and we can’t get enough!
Bologna’s street food scene isn’t just about savory delights. For those with a sweet tooth, the city offers some incredible desserts. We visit a charming gelateria for a taste of artisanal gelato. With flavors ranging from classic pistachio and stracciatella to more adventurous options like balsamic vinegar and ricotta with fig, there’s something for everyone. The creamy, rich texture of the gelato is the perfect way to cool down after a day of exploring.
Beyond the food, Bologna’s history and culture are intertwined with its culinary traditions. We take a moment to appreciate the city’s stunning architecture, from the medieval towers to the beautiful piazzas. The lively atmosphere of the streets, filled with locals and tourists alike, adds to the charm of our adventure.
If you’re planning a trip to Bologna, we highly recommend indulging in the city’s street food. It’s a fantastic way to experience the local culture and flavors without breaking the bank. And don’t forget to explore the historic markets and hidden stalls - you never know what culinary treasures you might discover!
Before we wrap up, we’d love to hear from you! Have you tried any of these Bolognese street foods? What’s your favorite Italian dish? Let us know in the comments below. Two fun facts: baloney is actually coming from Bologna, and it was supposed a sort of imitation Mortadella, which is often called Bologna in the US. Second fun fact: did you see the name of the beer? Socc'mel in the local dialect means literally "Blow me"...

Please, do not advertise too much Mercato delle Erbe. It's were we locals go. Sooo... If you could help us keep it almost tourist free, we'll be so grateful... 😅

So happy to hear that! Italy has so much to see and do outside the super popular cities. We’ll be showing much more. Near Bologna there are so many other experiences. Renting a car and driving around outside the big cities is very easy. You get to really experience Italy. You’ll love all the food here ❤️

Loved the video, just one thing, as an Italian I HAVE TO tell you ahaha, “piadina” is absolutely not considered a sandwich, it is something unique, it is not considered to be bread, it’s just a “piadina”
