  • Watch this short documentary on Purdue graduate and "Popcorn King" Orville Redenbacher, (history of popcorn), originally aired on the Big Ten Network. Orville Redenbacher was a very active student during his time at Purdue -- part of Alpha Gamma Rho, Agricultural Society, Agricultural Editor Society, Press Club, Band, Union Work, Class Track, Class Cross Country, Debris Yearbook editor and Exponent editor. Redenbacher worked in various agriculture-related positions across the state of Indiana until 1951, when he turned his full focus to the perfect popping corn. Orville Redenbacher Popcorn launched in 1970 with its namesake front and center in all advertising. The Purdue grad has been a recognizable face ever since.

An amazing story about an amazing man.
My life started out similarly, with my own crop fields and all the accomplishments I could manage in 4-H and FFA and eventually PAS (Post-Secondary Ag Students), Collegiate 4-H and 4 years as a national competitor in NJHA (National Junior Horticultural Association). My collection of ribbons, trophies, plaques and certificates from county, state, and national level competitions is vast.
My goal was to become a count agent and my path was thru college degrees in Agriculture at SUNY Cobleskill and Cornell University in New York State. I did have some great summer jobs at Rutgers University research farm and with county and state offices of Cornell Cooperative Extension.
While my college roommate DID became a county agent and then a state Extension associate for the past 30 years, somehow I lost the ambition to pursue that career path. After various good paying jobs to pay off my student loan debts, I went back to the farm and have stayed there ever since.
I have had a good life and have been reasonably successful. But I certainly do not have the name recognition close to what Orville Redenbacher has earned.

Men like him are who we need to look up to today. He was the real deal, and remembered where he came from.

Does anyone remember the brick and mortar Orville Redenbacher stores inside malls in the 80's?

As a kind of popcorn connoisseur, I'm a little bit disappointed that they didn't specify whether he made white popcorn or yellow popcorn. The video I think it's probably yellow. Also they didn't mention the fact that he was almost killed on a plane made by the wright brothers In which his co-pilot did die.
