I like it! The color values, the texture of the background, the old world feel. This could quickly become a favorite. Thank you so much! I've always found Marseille majors quite fun. 😊❤🃏
Thank you for another interesting and witty review. I highly appreciate your videos. They are pieces of art by themselves and one can tell you are putting a lot of work / energy / love into them. I wasn't sure about this deck, but it surprised me in a good way. The Hidden Message Tarot ... A deck I am still searching for. I even mailed the creator, asking if it will come back in print or if there is a leftover copy I could buy, never received a response. Glad you show it from time to time, so I can enjoy it for even a tiny moment.
Sorry to hear about the Hidden Message. Maybe the guy is super-busy? I imagine he must be pleased that his tarot did well, and will maybe do a 2nd edition when he has time.
@@RawSpirited Hi! Perhaps you know about this already, but Julien's deck is now available for pre-order on his website. I just ordered and paid for mine. Hooray!
You definitely fulfill the nerd in me. What a witty review. I appreciate how you compare certain cards with the other decks. I am looking forward to your thoughts on this deck months later.
Thanks very much for this review. This is a handsome deck and I like the ideas presented here. I have come to look forward to your reviews. I would be interested in your take on the Thoth Deck at some point if that interests you.
Thank you. Regarding Thoth, I don't really like it. I find the re-jigged court cards a big problem, and actually I don't like the graphics, with words being printed over other words and so forth. I don't like all the keywords flying around, especially as I don't agree with them anyway! But I probably wouldn't dare to review it without dong a lot of homework first. I once got told off by a Crowley fan and it wasn't nice🙂
@@teatarot4557 I really do love the Thoth although the sickly greens and oddly shaped body parts are hard to ignore for me. But publically commenting on the deck really does invite the poshies of Crowleyland to unleash their nastiness 👹 My first problem w this TdM-W is that the styles of the Middle Ages are um weird. And reminds me of the days of throwing ones sewage out the window, like some of those muddy Minors. There's an image for ya 😅 But I am NOT ruling this out bc it's a good start and had my attention til the end. I store any deck I am not working with in its box. Your reviews are a gift to us all. @@thomasjordan3241 Speaking for myself, I don't see it that often anymore bc it has become a very popular deck. There are snobs, but I'm in a Thoth FB group and it is extremely civil and helpful w any questions.
I just bought this deck myself, having seen it briefly on your channel in a previous video. My cons: I wish the card stock was a bit better, but the only issue I have with the illustration is the drawings of the hands on the Aces. They have this comic book appearance that is different than the majors and leaves behind some of the wacky old style rendering of the majors. Still, I'm finding it a nicely saturated, fun deck overall. I've been putting the cards in the bag in the box with makes them secure but a bit annoying to get out. I would have appreciated an extra blank card since cards can get damaged and the ability to swap in a blank one can at least keep a deck readable. Not that my dog recently had a field day with one of my World cards or anything! Very nice, and thoughtful review as usual. Enjoy your work very much!
So interesting. One of my first decks was a hybrid and I rarely used it because I didn't like the art style. I think it is just called starter deck. It is in woodcut style and has orange backs. Now I'm curious to pull it out and look at them closer. Love the comment abt demented faces lol
@@teatarot4557it is "Starter Tarot Deck" by George R. Bennett, sold by U.S. Games inc. It is still on their website, I was surprised, I've had it abt 30 yrs! It is an odd deck. Maybe you can find a walk through online. If not, maybe I can make one ha :)
Robert, can you elaborate on The Magician in this deck, please? In the video, you mentioned different archetypes: The Juggler, The Quack Doctor, then there was another name that I didn't quite catch. Explain, please, why, in your opinion, these archetypes are more useful for card 1. Danke schön🙂
Hello Sonia I might have said "mountebank". I like the aspect of the Magician (or Juggler ) that is to do with "fake it till you make it." He is the young or young-spirited person who says, "I can do that!" even when they have no training. In selling snake-juice in the market place, or winning money by fooling people with the three-tumbler trick, he makes something out of nothing. So this card can symbolise confidence and the ability to create results out of nothing. I find "magician" a bit ambiguous, although it is also a nice symbolic word in its way and can suggest similar things. Rx
Hi Robert, I'm late on commenting this video, but I found your channel because I am on that same quest : finding the "perfect" Marseille-Waite deck ! I love your reviews (real reviewers are hard to find on YT these days) and I really enjoyed this one. I know the deck because one of my friends owns it, but I agree with you : the faces look strange, the colors are too muted and depressing for my taste, I don't like the fake mediaval style either. I just want to add something about Emmanuelle Iger : this is a project she has had for years before it was produced, she's quite famous in France in the tarot community because for years, she was one of the very few authors teaching about RWS (Marseille tradition was still the dominant one, even 5 years ago) and a lot of french people learnt their RWS with her books (I'm one of them). I'm just giving you a little more context around the fact that only her name appears on the book. The french audience wants to know that it's a book written by her, and no one else. I'm sure it's not mean and that she is very aware about artists needing to be fully credited as well. I hope this makes sense. This comment is getting long but I have a question around the same topic : do you know the Deck of the Bastard (self-published by Seven Star) ? It's a mix between Etteila for the majors, RWS for the minors, and other historical sources I guess (court cards are not RWS). It sounds strange but it seems to work fine, I saw some good reviews (Benebell Wen has one on her blog). I would love to hear your point of view !
