To me there's just not much better musically then this right here. Sure there are other masterpieces but this one is up there. Anyone that's played guitar for any length of time knows this man makes it look and sound way too easy. Tony's singing voice is just icing on the cake. RIP Tony. As long as I'm living on this earth I'll be listening to you pick and sing.
I've heard one after another, male, female, young, old, high, low, short, tall, skinny, fat, big, little do Church Street Blues and not one of em can come close to Tony Rice. Tony Rice is the best hands down.
Truly a great example of the musical genius of Tony Rice live!! Not many folks today could pull that performance off at that level both musically and vocally. This was 30+ years ago!!!
The man had a great voice in his prime, in addition to his virtuoso guitar skills. Lovely song. There is an even better Rice version of this song on this site.
Berkshire Mtn BG Festival only ran from 1976 to 1981, or perhaps '82 when it was held in Duanesburg NY. It's wonderful to watch this footage and know I was there even tho I don't specifically remember this moment. (I do remember that wooden wreck of a couch down near the stage.) There's a whole lot of other moments that Tony gave us all up on that mountain that I do remember. One night, with the TR Unit, I thought they were going to blow the top off the mtn. He is the best.
Church Street Blues wasn't released until 1983. He also didn't start touring with his bluegrass TRU band until 1985 so I would assume this is 1985 / 1986. His singing is quite good here so I am guessing summer of 1985.
I've not long discovered tony rice , why the he'll ain't I heard of this brilliant musician , I hate the cultural Marxist celebrity trash main stream , God bless tony rice.
Rest easy, Tony. You will be missed!

fairsherrr I too was there, and you are right, they did blow off the mountain top. Those were some very good old days.
