Robinswords did a really good video showcasing the different levels of cuts. The flat slap left minor cuts like paper cuts and some bruising. Definitely something to use to attempt to stop a fight without going lethal.
In a wedding involving a naval officer, there will often be a sword arch for the recessional. It's "traditional" for the last two swordbearers to lower their swords to form a gate for the bride and groom, and to demand they kiss before passing. Then, after letting them pass, one of them will provide the bride (or, these days, the spouse of the officer) a gentle slap with the flat of the blade as seen in the beginning of the video, saying "Welcome to the Navy."
There actually was a German man who was being attacked by a drunk man, he tried to use the flat of his sword to discourage the drunk guy but it didn't work so he had to use the edge but in the end he had to grab the drunk man, the guy went to court for murder but was let go because of the bruises and small cuts on the body.(also in Germany at the time stabbing someone was illegal and inhumane)
Striking with the flat of a sword is kinda like shooting to wound with a gun. Both are less effective, harder to pull off, and the courts will still consider it deadly force anyway.
Back in '94 Cold Steel had a demo set up where you could test their blades on a cold rolled steel cuirass. The let me strike it with my Kirby bastard sword. The first strike was edge on and it shredded 9" through the steel. The second strike was with the flat and it accordioned 9" of the steel down to just over an inch. Even with armor, flat can kill. That said, never strike with the intent to injure and not end. Lawsuits follow once they get out of the hospital.
There's a Polish saying "letting someone off with a flat", meaning same as to let someone off the hook. It refers to hitting someone with the flat, instead of the edge and therefore not wounding them
Reminds me of mifune from soul eater. The whole time he first fought black star, he hit him with the dull side. Black star only beat him at the time was how not serious he took it. Granted, mifunes style is absolutely ludicrously extra. But damn its cool!
When the HEMA groups in my state get together to perform at ren faires, sometimes a few of us will spar in that old fechtschule way for the audience, mainly aiming for the shoulders and the torso with the flats of their feders.
Here’s my question. Me and bro were “sparing,” (we’re not fencers or anything, we were just kinda messing around), and I was telling him about how reverse grip is awful. He said “no there’s more control when in short range,” but I don’t buy it. Thoughts?
Would it also be useful against a somewhat armored area on your opponent if you’re concerned with maintaining your blade’s edge for a more solid cut? Especially if you’re in a situation where you’ll have to fight multiple opponents without being able to do maintenance on your sword between fights
I love the detail about self defense. It’s the same with firearms… you can hit a guy with a gun and that shit will knock you out cold 😂 every confrontation isn’t the situation for someone to be killed, mainly because most of the time you’d be jailed and because people don’t deserve to die for starting a fight. A lot of people might not know this and this was very important. The thought of jabbing an attacker with my stainless steel firearm slide and hard polymer base is just hilarious 😂 same with a sword.
I have been watching your video for quite a while now, i am a Filipino can you review our weapon based martial art Arnis (sport Arnis and combat Arnis) if it's effective and practical in actual combat
Sellswords, can't believe you missed the third scenario: disrespect If somehow you are in a fight against someone with a sizable skill gap favoring you, can you get more disrepectful than punishing a big opening with a little flat love tap? Dangerous and probably not fully recommended because if the opponent's thin skinned, this fight can become a bloody skirmish real quick, but think of the juicy flex it'd be to humiliate instead of debilitate. If that isn't a good way to flex the skill diff between you and your opponent, what is?
If that was the point then why do this at all? If I had to hurt less I'd put some fluffy gloves on and do some jiu jitsu. You'll probably just pass out... But if you try to escape too much you might sprain your neck or get cauliflower ear.
Because going unarmed vs somebody with a sword will get you killed quickly. You can still use the spanking as a distraction to go for a grapple, but it might make your opponent reconsider without you having to get into dagger range.
Here I thought you'd be all "NO HITTING WITH THE FLAT IS A STUPID DUMB FICTION THING THAT'S STUPID AND DUMB AND ANYONE WHO DOES IT IS ALSO STUPID AND DUMB"
Have you guys ever seen the super advanced cottos for spears? Yeah, I like to do them but hit with the flat of the spear.I know you just don't Jack.Just cut out the jams. It's super fun.I hate swords so much.My favorite the weighted heavy bladed staff.Yeah the The sword breaker you know the one that the japanese mock and give it to women The techniques on matter unstoppable dude
That NL self defense part is a bit troublesome. 1 you could still be prosecuted for attempted Murray-der because technically that is a 0 HP weapon. Sorry. If I say the wrong thing YT makes my comment vanish. Smacking someone with the flat if they are armored might daze them to get into the cracks of their suit
We actually have some documentation of this happening. Proving that you tried to resolve the situation non-lethally could have been taken into consideration back in the day.
@@SellswordArts O i don't disagree with you about back in the day, but now-a-days if you give someone a RBF too hard you can get in trouble. It's like when people shoot to wound. Anyway. I can see this as a way to taunt opponents during training or chastise pupils too. Thanks for the videos and hard work
Don't know if you comment at this. But what you think about this movie scene? Because everyone says it's most accurate movie Sabre fight: th-cam.com/video/ljExTEPNFnM/w-d-xo.html
Good point on the katana, is that you dont need to hit with the flat, just hit with the dull side not killing either and having no chance of messing up the alignment trying to hit with the flat, also i have an theory that the dull side hurts more than the sharpened side, talking about pain not injure

If anyone hasn't seen that video yet I highly recommend. There's also a short version of it without commentary
Missed the chance to say

You should’ve said “at least buy me dinner first.”
I'm pretty sure he did lol

@klh_io like in the 16 or 1700s I think
I thought the bending/flexing of the sword was a bad thing.
I learned something new here.
I can't believe flicks are real swordfighting
"Sword" arts indeed

How are two muscular grown men so adorable? The little thumbs up/thumbs down melted my heart 😭
The flat is for warning, the edge is the last warning and a thrust is to kill the opponent

The best way to fight with a sword is Dual wielding Zweihanders in reverse grip. Change my mind.
Given your mind is gonna be spattered across the back wall, that would make it pretty easy to change XD
@Rachel-fi4sc go on then change it
This is pretty dang 90s
do people carry swords for self defense? That sounds really fun ngl
if someone tried fighting me with a medieval sword I would infact, not fight them
