Dr. Cornel West's Keynote Speech at Berkeley School of Theology

- October 21, 2022 - Dr. Cornel West's speech entitled "A Cloud of Prophetic Witnesses" at Berkeley School of Theology's 150th Anniversary Celebration Banquet wove together themes of Christianity, social justice, philosophy, politics, and music. In addition, Dr. West was awarded an honorary doctorate from Berkeley School of Theology.
Dr. West is an eminent theologian and is the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Chair at Union Theological Seminary. Dr. West teaches on the works of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, as well as courses in Philosophy of Religion, African American Critical Thought, the classics, philosophy, politics, cultural theory, literature, and music. Dr. West graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard in three years and obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy at Princeton.
Berkeley School of Theology (BST), founded in 1871, has served at the center of Baptist and ecumenical theological education in the far west of the United States for the last 150 years. BST is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches in the United States (ABCUSA) and is a founding school of the Graduate Theological Union (1962). Though steeped in the historic “free church” heritage, BST board, faculty and students hail from a variety of denominational and religious traditions in the U.S. and around the world.

I was born as catholic,left my religion 28 yrs ago(when I was 13)& have never practiced anything else! But opposite of my scepticism, brother West rattles my soul & I can not be pure atheist! He's also my favorite living intelectual & we need him sooooo much! Can't imagine coherent left thought without brother West! May he lives another 80 years 🙏

Well said , my brother . But allow me to add , that as much as I appreciate Dr. Cornel West , I would be committing a great disservice if I give credit to James H. Cone the pioneer of Black liberation theology and the Man whom Dr. West gave Notice in his speech .
James H. Cone deserves a lot of credit , it was him who first expressed the idea of a " transcendent love " . His book " The Lynching Tree " was premised on the idea of transcending the pain and suffering brought upon you by those who hate you shape who you are .

@@gennisparry4352 the people I try to care for are destitute, mentally ill, they include men in prison and people who live on the streets. The trend in our societies is to offer ever less solidarity. I sometimes wonder if life would not have been easier if I never saw this side of life. I was not born to it. I pray every day, many times a day, but am comforted by the solidary prayers of others. Especially those who like Brother Cornel, see the abyss but also hope, faith, love.

Hearing him talk about this tradition… wild because obviously for so many of us our tradition of Christianity sucks. I like the idea of serving the radical tradition, but its almost like we are starting at zero. Our Christianity was built to negate the radical, prophetic versions and it did that for us.
