  • In this episode of People’s Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and former high school teacher -- D Smoke. This extensive interview covers Smoke's youth, growing up Inglewood, California in a musical family with his mother Jackie singing for greats like Anita Baker, Tina Turner, and Michael Jackson, and her teaching him to play piano, starting at age 6. The trio discusses the early days of WoodWorks Records, Smoke and his brother having their own corner store selling CDs and merchandise to promote their movement, and ghostwriting for Ginuwine, The Pussycat Dolls, and others.
Later, D Smoke, Kweli, and Jasmin talk about different perspectives of what defines success, D's heartfelt song 'Free' (dedicated to his close friend Chiz who passed away due cancer), gang affiliations being inevitable growing up in the hood, D's use of the word 'Latinx', and the topic of N-word passes. D Smoke gives his take on his frequent comparisons to Kendrick Lamar and is asked how he has successfully balanced the hustler and pro-black sides of his identity simultaneously. Smoke is also asked about his work teaching at Inglewood High School, and what unique challenges teachers of color face working within marginalized communities.
In the second half of the conversation, things move to D Smoke's appearance on the Netflix hit show 'Rhythm + Flow'. Smoke talks about his unforgettable face-off with Snoop Dogg, and the friendship that was established in its aftermath. Both Talib and D agreeing on it being one of the realest moments on television. They discuss Cardi-B and her growth as a judge on the show, as well as his memorable battle with Old Man Saxon, how he got through forgetting words during a performance, and what was going through his head as they announced the winner of the competition. D also speaks on his latest album 'Black Habits', and the creative process behind it, physical bullying vs. cyber-bullying, cancel culture, working with rapper The Game, and what Kobe Bryant and his memory means to him and the city of Los Angeles.

2:33 -- D Smoke names off some of the most notable natives from his hometown of Inglewood, California. He goes into the early days of producing out of his parents' garage, banging out records on a weekly basis, and he also speaks on his 'WoodWorks Records' movement, resembling something similar to what Nipsey Hussle was doing on Crenshaw, slanging hard copies of his music as well as clothing to promote his brand.
7:09 -- D Smoke speaks on his authenticity being a big selling point on paper when he entered the show ‘Rhythm + Flow’. He tells that the most challenging part of the competition, was to remain focused with all the tentative energy surrounding him and the other contestants leading up to performances.
8:59 -- Talib asks D Smoke about how his life changed at age 9, when his father came home from prison. He describes the contrasts of life inside and outside the home, fighting almost everyday he left the house. Then when his father arrived, being urged to channel his aggression in a more productive way through activities like Karate and other sports.
11:50 -- The trio discuss the myth of the black broken home in inner cities, and how that idea is being shattered as a real statistic, but still very prevalent in stereotypes. D also talks about how crucial his supportive family dynamic has been to his success.
14:50 -- D Smoke talks about his family's strong background in the musical arts, his mother Jackie singing for Anita Baker, Tina Turner and Michael Jackson, as well as his uncle Andrew who played bass for Warren G, Snoop Dogg, Destiny's Child, Chaka Khan, Prince and many others. He speaks on being taught to play piano by his mother at age 6, and describes how creating music came so naturally in his household, almost as it was a second language spoken day in and day out.
17:55 -- D Smoke talks about so many artists forgetting about how much influence they have on their fans. Jasmin also asks D if Chance The Rapper really didn't know that he played piano, on Rhythm + Flow, as he claimed.
20:24 -- D Smoke talks about one of his mentors being record producer Bryan-Michael Cox, who flew the WoodWorks crew out to Atlanta to write, and produce songs for Genuine, The Pusscat Dolls, Jahiem, Lloyd, Joe and others.
22:09 -- Talib asks Smoke if he thinks that his early introduction to the music industry gave him an advantage on ‘Rhythm + Flow’. He states that he went into that competition not even to necessarily win, but mainly to represent. They go on to discuss the different perspectives of what really defines success, and if winning should always be the ultimate goal.
27:17 -- D Smoke talks about his song "Free" being dedicated to his close friend and first rapping partner -- Chiz, who sadly passed away due to lymphoma. He reflects on Chiz being the one who taught him how to structure raps in a way that brings the listener in.
32:59 -- D Smoke speaks on the chapters of his family's history living in Inglewood, California, and also discusses how gang affiliations are inevitable when growing up in certain areas.
37:57 -- D Smoke explains his frequent use of the word "Latinx", being a gender-neutral alternative to Latino, and Latina. They also discuss the N-Word's usage by Hispanics depending on where they grew up, and also speaking truth to those with false assumptions of a pass to use it wherever they go.
44:28 -- Talib asks D about his Spanish speaking background, teaching it at Inglewood High School, as well as using it in his writing. He talks about learning it in order stop missing out on parts of conversations with his good friends that would frequently code-switch, alternating languages.
51:46 -- Talib asks D Smoke about his pro-black style and how that has drawn comparisons to Kendrick Lamar. Talib starts out asking D about how he's able to make his hustler attitude and pro-black music and personality work in an industry that frowns on it. D explains he has always worked to not compromise his pro-blackness even in the face of opposition, and he looks at how people have pointed to similarities between him and Kendrick. He then goes into how those comparisons always hit artists who stand out on their way into the industry. That is until they prove themselves.
56:33 -- D Smoke is asked to reflect on how his teaching Spanish and music theory at Inglewood High School has informed his artistry. He also defines what makes a real teacher as opposed to someone that goes there to simply put in the hours and collect a check.
1:00:12 -- Talib asks D Smoke what unique issues do teachers of color face dealing with marginalized communities. D responds, that teachers of color are not there just to teach, but to alter long-standing toxic paradigms that have plagued their communities, as well as to create as many opportunities as possible for them to succeed.
1:07:42 -- D Smoke talks about his memorable Snoop Dogg face-off on 'Rhythm & Flow'. D is asked to explain exactly what happened in the moment that Snoop asked him "Where you from though?" He thinks that Snoop could pick up on him being from Inglewood because of the energy and authenticity behind D's art, and Snoop was moved by it. D then goes into Snoop's energy and agrees with Talib that their 'Rhythm & Flow' exchange was unlike anything seen elsewhere on TV. They bonded in that moment, and D says Snoop has been his biggest ally in the game ever since.
1:15:14 -- Talib asks for D Smoke's take on Cardi-B's perceived growth as a judge on ‘Rhythm + Flow’, from someone solely concerned with marketing tactics, to really respecting the process, passion, and craftsmanship of these artists. D explains that there's much more to Cardi-B's creative abilities than many give her credit for. D also talks about his iconic battle with Old Man Saxon on Rhythm + Flow, in part being so great because of the high level of mutual respect they had for each other.
1:26:53 -- Jasmin asks D Smoke about having to write a song within 48 hours for an episode of ‘Rhythm + Flow’, him forgetting the words during his performance, and how he still managed to make it a success with the audience. Talib also notes the unique factors he witnessed about D's writing and performances that made him a stand out on the show.
1:31:07 -- Jasmin asks D Smoke about his thoughts at the time when they were announcing the winner on the finale of ‘Rhythm + Flow’. He also speaks on the real feeling of accomplishment shared by all the contestants, regardless of the placings.
1:37:56 -- D Smoke speaks the creative process behind the making of his latest album 'Black Habits', with a strong focus on spirituality and storytelling. They also discuss one of D's favorite life lessons, that he frequently tells his students about extending their runway, and making room for mistakes on their path to success.
1:41:02 -- The trio discusses physical bullying vs. cyberbullying, and why the latter is actually more damaging. Smoke also speaks passionately about his strong disdain for cancel culture, and Jasmin asks D how he deals with haters online.
1:47:31 -- D Smoke talks about working with rapper The Game, him being the first one to reach out to him following his win on ‘Rhythm + Flow’.
1:52:28 -- D Smoke is asked if he can break down what Kobe Bryant means to LA, and to him personally. D expresses why the loss of Kobe was so deeply heartbreaking to his city, and explains why Kobe personifies true inspiration.

You can be a college graduate, teacher, writer/producer, artist, speak another language fluently, and still have respect in your hood. People's Party has such a great vibe between the guest and Talib. It's an underrated skill to switch up the question flow based on what the guest is speaking on. Talib is a great listener and genuinely curious about the artists ideologies, motivations, and most important their creative process. D-Smoke is himself at all times which is why these doors have opened for him. His spirit and voice is necessary in this next era. Completely comfortable in his own skin and has confidence that's born from humility. Great job brothers. Last thought: I think it would be dope if you could do a People's Party roundtable with Pharaoh Monch, Yasin Bey, Black Thought, Royce Da 5'9", Jean Grae. Wishful thinking but a fan can dream. One love from Bed Stuy brothers.

Real recognizes real... this was a 🔥 interview between conscious and talented intellectuals. D Smoke has an old soul vibe and seems very humble. He’s def here to stay. Much respect to your music Talib & how you allow his voice to be heard throughout this interview.
Subbed for authenticity and deep contents.
Been waiting for when radio starts to bump more conscious rap & give more recognition to the underground talents. Cardi B was speaking the truth. D Smoke gets it. Sustainable and impactful music will always stick around.

And another brilliant interview on the book for Brother Kweli. Thank you for this gem. Truly insightful. This podcast/video is like CBS Sunday Morning or Meet the Press of American hip hop and our culture - coast to coast and all places in between.

Really loved how you drew him out, loved how you connected to his music and told him how, not just paying lip service, but genuine connection. This is my first time listening to one of your interviews..... this will bring me back now, to look for more. Thank you. You could tell that D-smoke really enjoyed the exchange.

Talib does the best job since Combat Jack at having meaningful conversation with MCs and other true practitioners within the craft . My dream guest is for him to build with Brownsville's Ka . His narrative is the stuff of hip hop superhero shit . An embattled survivor of Brooklyn's gutter life who pens reflections so exquisitely grim , all while working his redemptive life as a FDNY captain is imo one of hip hop's most interesting real life stories .

Wow, excellent interviews with 2 African American authentic, renaissance men. The main points generalizable to so many life issues. I was captivated from beginning to end, looking up names and songs referenced. Talib Kweli has the mature thoughtfulness of Fareed Zakaria , and D Smoke has a charisma similar to Bob Marley. Thank you, good medicine.
