We had a cat who needed to use an inhaler. They have an adapter that you can put over it that fits cats' faces. We thought it was going to be traumatic, but the cat didn't mean mind it too much. That cat loved tuna, so I had his favorite treat, some "tuna juice" (blended tuna and water) at the table with me. He figured out that if he let me do a couple of puffs with the inhaler, he got the bowl of "tuna juice". After the first time, all I had to do was show him the inhaler and he knew he was about to get some "tuna juice" and he'd jump up on my lap and sit for the treatment. He was such a fun cat.

Thank you for your video. My previous vet had my 19-year old cockatiel on a 10-minute nebulizer treatment 3 times a day. When my cockatiel's condition got more severe and I was unable to schedule an appointment, my vet referred me to an avian specialist. The new vet said that the nebulizer treatments were not necessary. My cockatiel is now 20 years old and is experiencing more respiratory issues. After seeing your video, I am going to try the nebulizer treatments again with the solution that the previous vet provided which was saline-based but also included additional medication. The vet's tech jury-rigged a clear plastic tote, similar to the one in your video, but with a t-shaped tube to connect the nebulizer to the tote.
By the way, my previous vet also suggested a warm-mist humidifier which the new vet said was not necessary, so I might try that again.
Thanks again for your informative video.

Our vet used a similar method to give our cat oxygen when he got a severe respiratory infection as a kitten. Instead of a plastic tub, though, he used a kennel, plastic sheeting and duct tape. Needless to say Tigger wasn’t very happy about it, especially initially, but it did help him recover and our family got almost 10 great years with him after that.

I was going to make a Rubbermaid chamber for my Macaw but I decided to try a nebulizer mask on her instead because it looked like her beak would fit right in it. She puts her beak in the mask and I hold it for her. She just stands there and breathes it in. Such a good girl.

Essential oils are pretty bad for birds. They’re extremely sensitive to chemicals and EO’s can cause skin problems and even death. They can’t even have candles burning around them because their tiny lungs can’t handle it.

    • @rfldss89
      @rfldss89 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I think that's very hard to answer for the same reason as it pertains to humans. 1) Essential oils agent well regulated, so there's no real way of knowing what they actually contain. 2) modern medicine works better, since it has actually been scientifically tested and modern pharmaceuticals are heavily regulated and tested for years before they even reach the market. I'm sure the same thing is true to some extent for veterinary medicine.

My princess parrot got a nasal infection that i didnt notice until it was too late. I took him to the only bird vet in town, but by then (only 2 days after seeing symptoms), he was very weak. I had more or less hand fed him the day before, just to make sure he was eating, but he died a couple days later. Its weird, coming home and not hearing him say hello, or thank you when i put seen in the dish for all the birds. Its been 4 months or so. But Im glad to see this, next time i know there will be other options, and ive started getting my other birds used to being in a box like that just to be safe down the road. Hopefully i never have to use it, but at least theyll be happy in there... hopefully...

Thank you for the demonstration! I currently have a 10-year-old budgie with a sinus infection. He’s been on two rounds of antibiotics but we are now going to try a nebulizer. But the nurse who gave me a demonstration today of how the nebulizer works, told me that the chamber shouldn’t be completely air tight. He said I should make a hole on the other side to let used air escape. Is that not how you did it?

Today I got the news that my bird (for 15 years and im 23) has a chronic respiratory desease that was mainly caused by their poor diet, its been making me feel so ashamed of myself for not reading and researching enough (again, I was gifted with my bird at age 8 and didn't really had the access to properly learn the cares of a exotic bird) that literally had me in tears in both my house and at the vet, even when they told me it's always a good time to learn and care for them.
Im still a university student and have 3 part-time jobs, didn't let my parents to pay a single bill for this as I know its a lesson for me of what it means to have a living being fully dependable on you, I paid more than 100 USD from my savings and daily budget, but it's okay because im a 100% compromised with my pet and fully dedicated to their health and care too.
I was in panic when the vet told me I had to use a nebulizer which I had no idea how to use and where to get it, thanks to your video is a problem less for me. I know I have to be calm and take it easy on myself and on my pet. I hope I can keep my girl for a long time since i'm sure she's my life partner and this is just a small bump in our life together; thank you for your video again, it really relieved me to see your calmness and how friendly you explained these stuff.
    Much love from Mexico,
    Nina and pet parrot Rita.

We had to use a nebulizer for my son when he was young. Wish there'd been a "nebulizer chamber" option for an active toddler!!
I wonder if you might at some time discuss carnivore diets a bit more - I'm continually surprised by what is and isn't "good" for a given creature - like learning that cats are generally lactose intolerant and shouldn't be given milk! Or - in the case of my three "house panthers" - they can't have fish of all things...!

Also, it seems like birds are essentially prone to respiratory infections? A lot of the people to whom I subscribe have parrots, and whenever they get sick, a lot of the time the problem is with their breathing, sinus, etc.. Any comments? Just a curious bird lover with no bird to love. Keep up your amazing work!

Thanks for the Video. This saved my birds life. I have a sun conure that is the best most loveable pet and he has chronic respiratory disease and I have Asthma so I am extra pro active with any breathing issues if any type. A few nights ago our conure started to wheeze and went into resp respiratory distress, he gets this every few weeks but this time was the so much worse, I thought he was going to die it was not a slight wheezing it was full blown asthma attack so scarry... After watching your video at like 2:30 in the morning I called the closest bird animal hospital and told them my sun conure is in very bad shape and I don't think he will survive the over hour drive to the hospital. I told them I have asthma and a Nebulizer with albuterol solution and they said it was safe to give it to him in a crisis situation and I did.. he survived the night barely but definitely perked up enough for me to take him to our local avian vet and he is now on nebulizer treatments with antibiotics in the nebulizer solution and your Video is how I set up his nebulizer room and gave me the idea to ask the vet if it was safe. He is now doing MUCH BETTER and his loveable silly LOUD self.. thanks for the video...

Hi jessi your a huge role model for me you helped me get an idea on what I wish to do with my life I really look up to you and have learned so much I just have two quick questions. I’m in eighth grade and am signing up for high school classes next week I was wondering if there is anything I should do to help me get a zoology scholarship like sign up for honors science. I was also wondering if you did anything in high school that helped you with were you are today? Last question, I am really wanting my first parrot I have been looking a lot into green cheek conures I would be able to spend 8 hours with the parrot Dailey and longer on weekends I’ve herd there relatively quiet and really adaptable but I do have 3 little sisters and they are all very curious one of my siblings is a toddler that loves to scream. The parrot and my sister would not be in the same room or near each other very often. I have been doing research for about a year and feel it would make a good fit but just wanted a second opinion.

this is interesting! My 2.5 yo brother has to get medication through a nebulizer, because he's too little for an inhaler to be effective, and it's a higher volume of medication than an inhaler would give either. Luckily there's face masks for creatures his size and shape, and so he just gets to watch some TV and sit on mom's lap for 20 minutes while he gets his breathing treatment. I had no idea they used nebulizers for non human animals, but it makes sense! and the mini motel of medication mist is a marvelous idea (although I think my brother would still prefer the mask, lol)

Great video! I have seen people use similar nebulizer chambers for snakes with RI. For the vapor, they would use a humidifier with diluted F-10 solution. This strikes me as kind of weird. Like it would be the same as spraying yourself in the face with Lysol for a cold. It seems to work though. Have you ever heard of this?

This was so cool to see because my brother has asthma that flares up when he gets the flu and his medicine is just like that! He has to have a mask or tube near his mouth and breathe it for about 20 minutes. The nebulizer machine he has is kind of loud and vibrates, is the one for the birds the same, and if it is, was that a problem when you were trying to keep them calm around it?

Archie got a boogery nostril and was sneezing, so it wasn't subtle. I give oral medication by hiding it in their regular food or a special treat. Archie loves peanut butter, so I put a little dollop in a tiny dish and mixed in the liquid medicine. Then I wipe the peanut butter mixture on his enclosure bars or a toy and he loves to lick it off. You just need to find a treat that your bird likes that you can hide medicine in.

Hi, I’ve had my Jenday conure for over 2 years now. She came from a very harsh life and was neglected as a little baby I had to feed her with a syringe. My question is, why does she have so many pin feathers? I know birds shed and the pin feathers are normal, but she has always had them since I’ve had her. When she lets me I can help her preen them. She takes baths about 3/4 times a week and eats Harrison’s bird food, which I was told is good. Any help?

Dont get a bird until you can pay for it. Dont depend on your parrots. I got my first bird at 16, when I had a job. I paid for everything for him. Then, at 17 I got him a mate, they are now a bonded pair. At 18, I moved out with my boyfriend and added a pair of parakeets to my flock. You really shouldnt depend on your parents to house and pay for your bird.

hello, I'm Doni from Indonesia. I'm very interested in this method of treatment. But seeing the price of a set of nebulizers is very expensive. Your box really inspires me heheh😂.Btw, do you have a reference for me,what liquid medicine is good for baby birds who often experience shortness of breath?
Thanks alot..🥰 best regard from Indonesi..

excuse me jess. I'm thinking about getting a cockatiel for my birthday in 6 weeks. Now i have done all the essential resource from the internet and your channel but was wondering about cage sizes. They say 24 inches long by 18 inches wide by 24 inches tall but i'm not sure of whether it needs to be bigger and was wondering if you could make a video about the size of some of your birds cages so i have an idea of how big i want it to be. it would mean a lot if you could help me with this since i've never own a bird before and i'm really trying hard to learn every detail i can get with your help. Please post about this topic in near future for me even in a ask jess would be good and keep the animals safe for me, especially steve and ginger, my favourites

red dragon1147 well it always depends on the bird. Yes 24x18 is an appropriate size. If the bird is out playing with you all day and is only in the cage for sleep then don’t worry, you can probably get away with smaller. The bigger the cage the better, but try to get the largest cage you can afford.

Hi Jesse, I have a question hopefully you see this. I have 2 parakeets bell and pepper, they are a bonded pair but sometimes my male parakeet (pepper) ... I’m not sure how to say it correctly lol but it mates with his favorite toy. My question is, is this normal? Should I remove the toy or is it ok to just leave it? I love your channel btw!!!!

Hi, I am currently nebulizing my duck. She poops in the box and the stench is overwhelming. Will her poop affect the treatment?

I know it seems basic, but can you do a “how to” video for cats like you’ve done for the guinea pigs and other animals? My fiancé and I are probably getting a cat soon, his parents have a young cat we are hoping to take after we get married in March and have more time for her, and I’m so excited! I already changed her name to Minerva McGonagall 😂 But I’ve never had a cat before.... only dogs. I’ve worked with animals for awhile and get the things like diet and handling, either have them as inside cats or put a loud bell on them so they don’t eat things outside, health stuff... but like if a cat lives outside how do I teach them where home is? Will a cat that’s been a mostly outside/sometimes inside cat (the one I’m planning on getting) be ok as an inside only cat in an apartment? Can I take her on walks to supplement her outside time so she doesn’t hurt the environment living outside? How do you litter box train a cat? How do I know if she’s unhappy with her life? Where do I put a litterbox? Are the expensive ones worth it? With all my animal experience, I’m shocked at how little I feel I know about the details of having a cat 😅 I’ll do research, but I would love a cat video!

Since I have asthma when I was sick I need to use the nebulizer to help me breathe because of the constant noise I’d end up falling asleep. I was wondering if the noise from the nebulizer ever bothered the birds? I know it can be annoying when I’m on the phone with I have a soft voice.

The motor is pretty loud. That's usually one of the scarier parts of the whole process for birds. To reduce the noise I put the motor on a thick folded towel on the floor as far from the bird as possible. After a few minutes the noise drowns everything else out and just becomes background noise. Unless of course you're trying to have a conversation :)
