Thank you so much for this incredible video...I've always wanted to see more than a 30 second clip of one of my Grampa's(Leaf Goalie Lorne Chabot)N.H.L. career...this is just excellent!~Donny Chabot
My Mother used to work in the Chicago Blackhawks front offices in the old Chicago Stadium and I remember they had a bunch of games on 8mm film that went back to this period of time. I'm sure the Wirtz family has a bunch..
This game is from March 5, 1932. The Habs went on to win the Canadian Division but lost in the Semis to the Rangers. The Leafs would go on to win their first Cup with that franchise name. Too bad the fight between Ace Bailey and Aurel Joliat is omitted. That would have been fun to see.
I was looking for game footage from this era forever !!..thanks alot to the poster !!...I actually have a program from the Boston Gardens from the 1933-34 season and Morenz & Joliat are listed as starters!...keep these video's comin!!
@ Rocker5593: According to Wiki, Maple Leaf Gardens is still there, but now it's been turned into a part grocery store/part athletic center, as of November 30, 2011.
The game was played March 5th, 1932 at Maple Leaf Gardens and ended in a 1-1 tie. The March 7th edition of the Montreal Gazette mentions the game being filmed in the lengthy description of the game. The two clubs were battling for first place in the Canadian Division standings.
So cool to see Morenz and Joliat, great transition on that goal, combining with "Black Cat" Gagnon. Thanks for posting this. I agree the players are quite good. Forward passing rules in various zones changing a fair bit in these years.
Great stuff! Thanks for posting! The most remarkable thing I see in this film is that a great many players coasted during their shifts, either standing still or barely moving. Maybe the good old days weren't so good after all.
Dude ... back then they played pretty much the entire game! There were no 'line changes' also NO FORWARD PASS out of the defensive zone (which is why you see them carrying the puck all the time). Also NO CENTER RED LINE.
6:48 Notice how they played defense soccer style. They stand at the blue line and wait for the play to enter their zone. Needless to say you can see how that wouldn't work well!
i think the fastest its ever been was in the early 90s, fr whatever reason it seems to have slowed a bit since then, i doubt many players will be speeding past Bure's speed anytime soon wasn't known as the Russian Rocket for nuthing lol
@hifichet Les Arbitres ont droits aux replays maintenant? Juste pour savoir :). Puis, pas mal le reportage d'époque, c'était beaucoup moins lumineux :P.
Hello. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing video! This is the longest clip of a pre-1950's NHL game that I have been able to find so far. Would you happen to know where I might be able to find more clips like this? Thank you in advance.
@verbod Thank you very much for the suggestion. The only person that I found on Google.com that has older NHL footage is 1959 and later. I was actually looking for games from around the time period of the above video (1933) or so. Am I looking at the wrong site? Thank you.
Now that's how hockey's supposed to be played what blows my mind is the maple leaf gardens is still standing!! The montreal forum too for that matter except its like a market or a mall now or sumthin called the Pepsi forum???
Cricket is Canada's first national sport. 1867, Canadian Prime Minister John A. MacDonald declared. Hockey became the national winter sport in 1994. Better late than never. Aye?

Donny, he was one of the pillars of early hockey. Full respect to him, you and all your family must be beaming with pride seeing him in action!
Do you posess any of your Gramps gear or sweater?
Yea and I'm the president of the United States of America...
I'd love to see a special league with 1930's equipment, technology, and rules....and ticket prices (not likely) - call it the retro league.

Saw a Blackhawks game v.The St.Pat's at The Chicago Coliseum on 13th & Wabash in 1929- great film

Awesome footage. I've read about these players but didn't know any film footage existed of them.

@@charlesapril5557 Actually forward passes were introduced into the NHL in the 1929/30 season
@@charlesapril5557 it gives it a Rugby style a bit.
Quite an honour to see Ace Bailey playing, given the sad end of his career later that year.
this is so damn cool. I dont know why but i expected the players to be a lot worse, they are actually good. I wish I could have experienced this live
@verbod Thanks! I look forward to hearing what you are able to come up with
hey i just noticed @1:15 "look at that boy go down the right boards smooth eh?" thats coming from a classic Canadian ahahaha!!!!!!
And they split the point. No shootout and the world didn't end- how could that ever happen?
Only 1 point for a win those days?
They're much better than I would have thought.
thanks !

+Abraham Lincoln That's hilarious, they just stand there waiting!
It's mindblowing to see how the game has evolved
Hockey had an anti-defence rule at the time.
It was like a differen't sport back then.
NHL's very first super star.
Him & Joe Malone
Morenz is the only one on the ice who looks like he could keep up with today, lol. Guys amazing.
Morenz and Charlie Conacher are probably the only two
This is also pre red line.
Modern hockey is said to be faster ... well, not that night :)))))) 6:00

At times I think they sped up the film.
Rocker5593 *cough* Conner McDavid *cough*
Gagnon to Morenz on a 2 on 1. Habs could use these guys now!

@retroquebec Ok !, Merci pour l'information ! :)
Any video of Howie Morenz is worth it.
No Zamboni's either
I wonder if Gary Bettman was still commissioner back then 🤣😂🤣
One of Ace Bailey's last games.
At 3:35 there's an offside for the goal!!! I think at that time there's only one referee
I froze the frame. Man that's close. Habs should have challenged!! Review would have had to wait for film to be developed.
@@joanschooley5160 I think the only problem is that coaches have only been able to challenge a goal for the last 25 years or so.
Ah, Les Good Old Times!
Awesome footage. Thank goodness we have one team wear white these days!!
