"You're not ready" is a blow because of the first episode. literally one of the first lines in the show was Vi asking "What did I tell you" and Powder answering "That I'm ready"
it kinda ties in with how Vi also previously told Powder how she knew her bombs would work. I think 2nd episode? In a way she was saying she knew Powder was capable, but she wasn't ready for the responsibility of being a team player. Especially in such a high stakes situation.
@@thesen8 Vi basically forgot to teach powder how to assess the situation. she encouraged her often and it just so happens that the one time where vi says she's not ready, powder felt like she had to proof herself
@@sqfzerzefsdf she didnt forget. Remember she's still a child too so she nvr evn knew it herself. She still has alot to learn bout life and to have the burden of raising your younger sibling at a young age would be hard on anyone. Thts what makes these characters feel so real. Theres no sticking to what you believe in. Everyone lashes out eventually especially following a series of unfortunate events. Theres not one thing tht felt out of place for how these characters reacted to the situations.
Telling Powder she’s ready for some heist hi-jinx and Powder thinking she’s ready, and being told she’s not, for a literally life or death situation are completely different.
Breaking into a building vs rescuing “dad” from a monster that just ripped two people apart and put Vander out with one punch.
Powder wasn’t ready, she set the bomb off next to her own people instead of the bad guys for godsake 🤣

Look, the whole show is brilliant and it’s great seeing people get swept up by the world. Buuuut this episode is the equivalent of the Red Wedding episode in potential reaction quality

The way Mylo looked at his final moment got me the most. Actually even before that, when he was already struggling with unlocking the locks you could see in his eyes he knew death was awaiting him.
They could actually make it to escape, if only powder delay for a few second before letting go the monkey bomb.

@@user-dn4kq8zh6l they wouldn't. You can see they're like in 2nd or 3rd floor AT LEAST. Mylo and Claggor were in physical condition to parkour out, but Vi and Vander definitely were not. And even if Mylo and Claggor escaped, they would just have been killed anyways, either Deckard would catch up to them due to monster speed or Silco's goons would eventually find them, and find Powder too.
Without the bomb, the whole family would die. With it, at least the girls survived.

My favorite part of that final scene that nobody seems to be talking about is how VI got space, but didn't leave or walk away completely. She just needed to gather herself for a bit. Immediately as she saw Silco standing over Powder, she was already running to her rescue. SO. MANY. SHOWS. do the opposite of this when a traumatic moment happens between two protagonists. They show the one protagonist shun the other protagonist until that protagonist either becomes a villain or gets kidnapped or whatever. Then once that moment happens, the first protagonist "has an epiphany" and realizes how much they cared about the other protagonist all along and goes to save them. It's such fucking bullshit writing and happens all of the time. I hate that trope. It makes that first protagonist come off as a bit of an asshole even when finally doing the right thing. This is like the exact opposite of that trope. It makes Vi that much more endearing to me. She never stopped being the best sister she could be, even in her biggest moment of weakness. And it makes complete sense for Powder/Jinx to think Vi completely abandoned her in that moment. It's so good and so well done both ways. One of the rare times something like this has made complete and total sense from both opposite view points. I just want to say BRAVO to the writing team for Arcane, you fucking nailed this better than 99% of shows do, and you did it all in 2 hours.
Instead of having Vi get space without actually leaving the scene, most shows would have shown Vi continue walking away without looking back to really "sell the moment". Then Silco would take Powder because Vi wasn't actually there to save her. And this episode would have been lesser for it considering how much these first 3 episodes really tried to paint and capture just how much Vi loves, adores, and wants to protect and make the world a better place for her sister. I love that even in her darkest hour, she stayed in that same area and didn't abandon Powder, even if Powder believes she did because of Marcus capturing her. And I love that she tried to run back and save Powder as soon as she saw Silco standing over her. No hesitation whatsoever. Vi is literally best big sister. I love her. And if she had walked away here like 99% of shows would have had her do, I'd be singing an entirely different tune about her. It really goes to show how one little choice (story wise, stylistic wise, or otherwise) can make all the difference in how someone views something. This episode is incredible; one of the best I've ever seen. And it's mainly because of one choice that holds it all together in the end for me.

Vi hitting Powder IMO is an important callback to their situation. Vi has been an excellent surrogate mother/big sister to Powder. But at the end of the day she is almost as much of a child as Powder, and she can't control herself. Hell, I'm not sure many adults would be able to control themselves at their child killing their brothers and father.
@@vernonalbayeros4719 I liked another comment i saw saying how Vi is so impulsive and violent. And that in that moment, if the culprit wasnt her beloved sister but just other person, instead of a single wild punch she would have probably beaten the person to dead out of grief. So yeah... its not good that she hit Powder, but in context...its in a way reasonable.
I'm actually really glad you brought this up. For some reason, I recall not being all that impressed with the decision to have Marcus suddenly show up and drag Vi off, but after watching it a second time I love how the writers handled it. It would have been a lot more cliche to just have Vi walk off, but the fact that she at least tried to come back says a lot about her character.
@@PDAnimation exactly. To me the fact that she didnt completely walk out of the scene shows me she was always going to come back, no matter if she saw Silco there or not. Vi cares about Powder more than anyone else. I dont subscribe to the notion that "she left her there to die." Its clear as day she stopped and wasnt actually going anywhere. It's made more tragic by the fact that her walking away for even a little bit to collect herself lost her Powder and Powder also believes Vi abandoned her because of this and Marcus. The dichotomy there is so good it hurts.

Vander - Silco relationship is mirrored Vi - Powder. They are (once) brother/sister but thorn apart because of different in ideal/personality. There's a lot of rhythm like this in the series.
And the same will be mirrored with Jayce and Viktor(possibly,just a guess)
The theme is a story of opposites throughout the whole series.
Vi punches Jinx.
Joey: It's Nato K, nato k, nato k
Okay it's NATO Kay it's NATO kay
The punch was brutal but nowhere near as heartbreaking as Vi calling her a Jinx
That line is why Powder disowned her
It was a culmination of her trauma from the last uprising and years of bullying from the others calling her, not just useless, but actively a burden
Vi was the only one in her life sticking up for her and actively trying to help her and now that lone voice of reason and confidence just validated all the doubts and fear she's felt over years
Right in the moment Powder needed her sister more than ever, that same sister just ripped her sense of self into several bleeding pieces
On the other side of things, Vi has had the worst day of her life. She found the courage to turn herself in to spare her siblings. Vander turns that around and gives himself up only for Benzo to get killed and Vander kidnapped.
She then tries to mount a rescue, leaving Powder because she's afraid to lose her too. She fights an entire squad of cutthroats by herself until she just can't anymore only for a bomb to go off.
Her adoptive siblings are dead, Vander is gone and her little sister walks up with a smile on her face and claims credit. She is beyond done and just lost it.
It's heartbreaking to watch but anything less wouldn't be genuine. Vi immediately regretted what she did and got some space before she did anything worse only for Marcus to come in at the worst possible moment. It's incredible writing and it is painfully tragic.

“You’re not ready” hit Powder hard because in the first episode when when was scared to jump off the roof and doubting herself, Vi reassured her saying that she was ready, even making her say it herself. Making her feel like she could do anything and everything with with them.
That episode was simply outstanding television and storytelling. Sure, its a worn out trope, but, it was done so well, performed so brilliantly that it became art. The little girl who voiced Powder gave what you can truthfully describe as a powerhouse performance here. She was actually 10 when these lines were recorded, not 11 and she...she brought this 44 year old man to tears. Simply unforgettable watching.

Even though it was a very intense situation I couldn't stop myself when you said "Mufasa. Scar. Mufasa."
10:25 - it was the devastating blow because in episode 1 at the rooftop Powder was afraid to make the jump , and Vi said "Remember what I told you , you are ready". It probably means that Vi encourages her little sister that way when Powder thinks she can't hang with the rest of the crew.

The voice acting in this series is next level.. you can really feel the emotion that these characters feel.
The thing I've found about spoilers - like the "I just wanted to help" line - I've found and come to appreciate with later years is that they're only hugely destructive to a show *if that show relies on shocking twists and subversions of expectations to entertain you.* Obviously, it's always best to go in fresh, but a good story is good *even if* you know everything that's about to happen, because it's about how those things happen. It's about the setup, the foreshadowing and the execution; all of that is done really well in the monkey bomb scene. It's not great because it's shocking. It's great because the whole of Vi and Powder's arcs until then have been building to that moment. You can feel in your bones that it's going to go wrong - *REALLY* wrong - before it actually does. If it's been spoiled for you, that makes you realize "this is the moment, holy shit", but if you haven't had it spoiled for you, you *still* feel that this is the moment.
TL;DR: Spoilers are only the worst ever if the story *relies* on "subverting your expectations" to be good, like The Last Jedi.

"You are not ready" is such a blow because "You are ready" is precisely the encouragment words that Vi gave Powder back in ep 1, and that has saved Powder's confidence in herself. That basically shatters Powder's self confidence with a single sentence.

Exactly. Powder, even as a child, is clearly not mentally stable. Vi is her rock, the one person who validates her and keeps her level. Vi always has her back. In that moment she feels like she's being abandoned. She clearly has some prior abandonment issues that Vi inadvertently triggers. They do a very good job of portraying Powder's mental health struggles in a very real fashion.
The way Powder hugged him confused me too at first, but when you think about it that's probably how many little kids would react the minute they see an adult to cling onto after everything that just happened
Rewatching Arcane really lets you notice more details and intricacies. Every shot matters and makes the story tighter.
1, During the fight at the bridge, there are a couple shots in Powder’s POV. In both of them she could see the fight happening from afar, but not able to see anyone clearly, or Silco at all. This explains why Powder lunged at Silco to hug him, as she did not know Silco was the mastermind behind these deaths.
2, During the explosion, we had several different POV, but Marcus’ one is the only one from outside. This explains how Marcus got to the scene and drugged Vi in the end. It also suggests that he got there without Silco’s knowledge or permission.
That ending gets me everytime. Like they had Vander free, had an escape route, and they had hope for an instance. And then powder finally has her bombs work... Also fyi I'm pretty positive the doctor is a legend so there's that for you to ponder as well.
The crystal in one scene opens the path to new possibilities, and one the other it brings chaos and destruction.
So glad Joey's takeaway moment from this episode was the Vi punch on Powder. That's some serious shit. That entire interaction between them in the end where Powder went from super happy to hysterically sad was done perfectly, but that punch... that's heavy.
Powder ending up in Silco's arms was THE twist of the story for me. It made the whole show and its main conflict between Vi and Jinx.
Man... Vander really did get Mufasa'd...
When I watched this for the first time, my whole body went numb, and I was honestly just passively crying. I was ruined, and watching this (for the 3rd time now) I'm still crying. The weight of the ending scenes to this episode was so well conveyed, it's kind of haunting.
I love you calling yourself out in real time, that was pretty refreshing.
Teared up so hard in the last bit, god damn, even though I've already seen it....
What I love about this show is that you can totally understand the perspectives of most or all of the characters. All their actions are justified in one way or another. Good stuff

I like the rotating final shot, because I feel like that is Vi's perspective as the chloroform kicked in and she was losing conciousness, combined with the raw sadness of the song. Pure heartbreak

i loved all of his reactions, all seems very genuine, but i also wanted to see him reacting to mylo and clagger saying vander also is their father, like,,, when they go to rescue vander and all of them are doing their best or how vander is a good father since even when he took the shimmer he controlled himself to protect vi instead of getting revenge from silco.. i love how all of them considered each other family, even if it seems like

You’re reactions are the best! I just finished this like a wk and half ago. My friend had recommend it awhile back. Love how you call it purp (can’t recall the actual name at the moment). And that you like Silco as a villain. I thought he was a cool villain as well. I didn’t know anything about the show so at the end of this, Powder/Jinx going to the ‘dark side’ was really intriguing even though I was torn up about her and Vi’s parting. Also, love how you said you could be watching Impractical joker instead, lol. I love that show!

So fun fact, Mylos voice actor and Councilwoman Shoolas (the really pretty black lady with the weird ring necklase thing with the really long golden finger tips which im guessing is a nod to Evelynn herself with her actual hands having super long sharp claws) voice actress voice actual champions in League of Legends. Mylo voices Ezreal who is actually a Piltover native, and Shoola voices Evelynn whos basically a dark mass of pain and agony that resembles a succubus. They also have hints to other champions in the game like Teemo, Tryndamere and even Star Guardian Jinx (a skin for Jinx)
Also for Spoilers for the end of season 1, while Vander does in fact die, he will return as a champion in league of legends lore, Warwick the monster of Zaun, also the scientist man is fine cause he is ANOTHER champion as well! His name is Singed and hes honestly really weird. Actually you know what, for the sake of my sanity and peoples curiosity, I will go right ahead and list every champion that we physically saw in Arcane. We see Vi, Jinx (Powder), Heimerdinger, Caitlyn, Singed, Viktor, Warwick, Teemo (In a book), Gentleman Chogath (if you go to Ep 1 when the gang is heading down to the underground there is a picture of Cho Gath in his gentleman skin hanging up in the elevator. As i stated above, Mylo and Shoolas VAs do voice champions Ezreal and Evelynn however the champions themselves
arent in the show.

It was not entirely Jinx's fault.
She only have one family and the father of family is captured, the rest siblings are going to help the father while leaving her alone who got trauma of lost family by her parent's death and realized that if they failed, she will be alone and she is scare of being alone especially in that slum world. She was waiting for them to escape but when she saw that monster bumping the iron wall. She got worried and she try to use it to save them as it is the only way she know to save them. Just that the luck of those kids including Powder was just bad.
Edit - Also, it was 3rd floor. They can't run far enough with their conditions from that Mutant given how fast that mutant move and also there is whole gang waiting for them outside if the building didn't explode by Powder. The monkey also distracted the mutant, giving them some times. It is just they have really bad luck except Jinx. She is the prey for misfortune. Poor girl with extremely bad luck. Born to be orphan and always messing up things even though she is just trying to be helpful.
