You know when you get a new car and you are like, damn when should I shift. Well I discovered 3,000 RPMs is probably the most universal shifting point. From there you can fine tune your shifts to your specific car.

15 year old girl here in 2024 who just got her permit and a Subaru WRX 2011, thank you for posting this! My dad is teaching me but we’re still waiting for the papers from the main DMV location confirming him as my driving instructor since I’m homeschooled. WARNING this is about GASOLINE cars, on Diesels I would recommend shifting at 1,700-2,200 rpm depending on the size of the engine, the number of cylinders, the torque and power of the engine. In the US diesels aren't very popular but for European viewers like me I hope this helped.

Thanks for the tip, just picked up my 2012 WRX hatch yesterday. My first car and first manual. I'm still working on my rushing myself out of 1st from a stop. Stalled a lot, even in reverse lol. But I'm loving this car too much to not learn manual.

hi! i really like your videos! 3k definitely is a good area. i drove a civic and stalled in second going below 3k. too low rpms are hard on the car too. so 3k is a good place to shift! thank you for your video!
Got a 2013 WRX and this helped me get my shifts down!
98 Z28. LS1, long tube headers, straight pipe. it was a stalled auto with a 3500 Stall with shift kid, but it was switched to a 6 speed manual later on. simply, it was a freaking beast!

You get throttle lag in the next gear if shifting too early, I normally shift around 3.5 - 4k when doing normal daily driving in wrx

This is the beauty of a manual transmission, you can shift however you like. My shifting greatly depends on the current mood i'm in as well as traffic conditions. A lot of times i'll play shifting games if the weather and road conditions allow and increase the fun ;)
Another thing that matters is the type of transmission - my civic has a 5spd while my maxima is 6spd close ratio.
Turbo gives you a very nice torque at low rpms but NA engines usually require higher rpms IMO :)

I just got my BRZ a week ago. It is my first manual car, and what helps a lot is in that car (idk if you can do it in the WRX) you can set a red light & a sound to go off at whatever RPM you want. oddly enough i set mine to 3000 as well it just felt right and i know i am supposed to keep the revs low while i am breaking in the car.

that helped a little. im buying a 2003 subaru wrx in a few weeks and its a manual. closest thing to manual ive ever driven was a buddies quad. everyone knows about the clutch and shifter on a quad so im not going into detail.

yes because terrain plays a big role.. and what he said in the vid is also true which is best applied for highways or any road without steep up..
I've only been driving manual for about 5 months now but one thing I've heard is to shift at about half of your max rpm, or more specifically, half of what is displayed on your tachomoder. In most cases (mine included) that would be 3500. I usually shift between that and 4000 unless I'm in a position where I need to take off slowly like I'm behind a line of cars or a slow moving truck
Well it really depends, the shifting rpm vary depending on the engine.
For example for casual driving, shifting a diesel engine at > 3k rpm is way too much but for a gasoline is k.
Hey man.. Big fan of your videos.. Good advice and real down to earth.. It's awesome how you go over even the smallest random issues on your videos.. Keep it up.. I do have a noob question.. How quickly do you release the clutch when you start off in 1st gear? Without wearing it out too quickly.. This is starting from a stoplight not a launch at a drag race..what I do is give it some gas 1500-2000rpm while releasing the clutch and kinda holding it and feeling for the bite point then fully releas
haha I drive an EVO X and i find your videos very helpful :), WRXs are great cars, I don't see why there should always be an argument, both cars are great I just went with what I liked more.
it made perfect sense and definitely helped.......If you were doing some "spirited driving", what would be the ideal shift point?
on my sti when im in gas save mode it has a arrow pointing up when to shift usually at 3k rpms but when i cruise slower than that it sometimes points to go up around 2 1/2 k its a cool feature helps out when to shift for best gas mileage

I do the same shifting in my new Chevy Cruze and not only its best to shift that way but its also great to get the best gas millage out the car.. :)
theres alot of play when shifting its weird coming from driving a tc but i love it.
When my oil and coolant is low I shift at 2.5 and when i'm warmed up I shift at 3 or 3.5. Sounds good :3. 3.5 is also peak PSI range on stock tune :D
In my WRX I try to shift at about 2500, since my turbo starts spooling at about 2600ish. Saves me quite a bit of gas doing so.
You can shift at lower rpm to save fuel. I shift 2,000rpm or 2,500 if I need to accelerate quickly but then I live in the city so I hardly need to take off quickly. Try shifting at 2,000 - you will improve your MPG.

I just bough a 2009 wrx. Its my first manual, been driving it for 2 days so far and 1st to 2nd is always jerky for me. Gonna try this and see how it goes, thanks for the vid.
It’s because you have to let your foot off the clutch slowly. Also rev match. 1st to second is quite smooth for me now, change fast and high revs but if you take foot off slowly it’s smooth.
If you hold the second gear for longer you can jump straight to 4th. You will probably not stress the engine out a lot more than usual, you might consume more fuel, because you have to rev it higher though.
But a grinding noise is a bad sign you might want to save up some money to get a new transmission/ new car.
Gotcha smurfin. I've been hovering around 2.5 consistently. Just about averaging 22mpg.

I couldnt agree more. I own a Subaru Wrx and I still think Evo x's are sexy cars as well. Id like to try a evo and see if theres any big differences lol.
It also depends on the car's personality. My car's Getrag 6-speed snores when I shift at 2000 so I rev it to a little under 3000 and it still gets great gas mileage.
Hey Mike, could you please make a video on how to safely but effectively launch a wrx? I recently got a 2011 and am finding the AWD tricky. I searched your vids and haven't found one on the subject yet. I imagine it involves slightly engaging and then feathering the clutch, but no one has been able to explain the finer points of proper execution. Much appreciated.

3000rpm is best for maual car.
it wont burn the clutch if you keep it down because its disengaged. i usually leave it in neutral unless i know the light will change soon. if i keep it down for awhile i get tired. lol
Don't let the over enthusiastic fans get to you. Drive what YOU love most. Am currently driving a non-turbo MINI and enjoy it all the time. I almost got a turbo model but was afraid I'd be racking up speeding tickets all the time.
i'm learning to drive, and in 2 months i'll be legaly allowed to drive by myself. my driving teacher tells me to roll into a stop, clutch in and brake, then shift into first and keep the clutch down, my father tells me to keep in neutral so my leg doesnt get tired. but i guess it comes down to preference and situation (ie start stop traffic, or just an infrequent set of light)

Excellent overview, though of course the shift points will differ on desired outcome and power band of your car. I know for my M3 the sweet spot is about 4500k.

Why shift down at 2000? I drive perfectly well around 1500

When you shift and the engine lands below a certain rpm the engine tries to stop it from stalling. That is what you notice. Also at very low rpms the engine has very little power so even when you step on the gas not a lot will happen.
When you notice this "jerking" you should shift a bit later.

I found it's extremely sensitive for STI to shift from 1st gear to 2nd, if you shift at a rev that's slightly off, the car will have a kick back or something

+hlshcd I think most cars are like that. I've personally found that I most consistently get the smoothest (and quietest) ride by shifting at 2000RPM from 1st to 2nd, which mathematically makes sense. I looked up the gear ratios for my car, and I've found that there is roughly a 30% greater difference between 1st and 2nd gear compared to each other gear increment. So, 30% less of 3000RPM is pretty close to 2000.
+Peter Schmidt My 06 350z wont shift smoothly at 2000 rpm it has to be 3k or higher or else it won't be smooth.

it will if you don't mix gas properly with clutch after switching the gear, and will make a big noise because its like doing an engine break.. like what he said for 40kph for 3rd gear is at about 2krpm without stepping on gas pedal (like engine idle)..
1988 Mercury Tracer hatchback. 5 speed manual. 4 cyl. I always shift at 3,000 but my dads shifts at about 4,000 or 4,500. he said I needed to let the engine open up fully. don't started shifting at 3,500. the engine didn't feel right so after watching this video, I'm going back to shifting at 3,000. thanks man.

I usually shift right around 2000 rpms and I drop down to 1500. Sure it's slower but I feel I get better mpg that way

It doesn't matter. Do what's more convenient for you. If you are new to driving manual I would keep it in 1st with clutch down and once u get comfortable driving, keep it in neutral so your foot doesn't hurt :)
This car looks so much easier to shift than my Corolla. In fact, I think that the Corolla is probably the hardest transmission to get used to due to lack of torque and a sensitive clutch. Having learned on an Outback and had tried a 328i and S5, my Corolla is still the hardest to drive.
That's been the big disadvantage with the flat 4 engine...the exhaust sound...nice to hear you like the catback sound with the turbo at cruising rpm...any particular type or brand? ...not the race version I hope.
It all depends on the size of your motor for instance for me having a stock 2000 civic EK with a d16y8 motor basically going up the slighest incline i have to shirt at 3-4 rrpms or else i lose power as to where my friend that has bigger engine than me shift at 2500 almost every gear and still be fine (he likes to save gas :P)

Yea that'd be a good idea.. Kinda along the lines of what ive been asking too.. Check the wrx forums on first gear takeoffs..I can get smooth takeoffs but I'm wondering if I hold the clutch in too long.. Cuz I kinda hold it at the bite point for a quick second..
dad drives bmw, shifts at 2000 lol. it's all about how much torque you have. in his gt turbo ( subaru ) he also shifted around 3000.

leaving it all the way in just makes your body have to stay in an awkward position.. and just puts a lil bit more wear and tear on the spring..
though if u have the clutch half way in at the friction point on a hill its getting burned out
You have to know your car's shifting points. Every car is different so watch the tachometer. I try to stay within 2-3000 rpm. If the car lurches forward when you shift, you need to readjust your shift point. Hope that helps.
i got a really heavy clutch because of all the torque in my wrx. if i leave my foot down at red lights it gets tired really fast lol

Did this on an audi a3 diesel 1.6 and it was too high. For diesels I would definitely recommend shifting at around 2000-2500rpm
One thing to also consider, never use the clutch to hold the car. People do this by rocking their feet on the gas and clutch at the same time. They put a tiny bit of gas to inch forwards. When the car rolls back a bit, they feed the clutch in. I've seen a lot of people do this. They're going to eventually have clutch problems and one MINI owner DESTROYED his clutch doing this. I have no idea how often he was doing it but my car is past 40,000 miles and he ruined his clutch at 25,000!
According to SOA: Shifting at 2500 RPM is the best of both words for economy and regular driving habits. Funny thing is... I naturally shift at 2500 anyways since i left the lot.

What do you drive? If you have a vehicle that makes significant torque from low revs then its fine. However if you drive an average 4 cylinder, it may be a little low, and you could be lugging your engine. This also depends on how hard you push the gas at low RPMs.

in normal daily driving in city or highway I shift at 4k and if I'm on it I still don't pass 6k on my STI. my EVO IX though I shift at 9k ;) it's my weekend car.

when your in first gear and sitting at a light, do you keep your foot on the clutch? or do you leave it in neutral? does leaving your foot on the clutch 'burn your clutch'?

How do you know wat gear to shift to safely while your coasting?
It's a bad habit because if you upgrade your clutch later on you could ruin your thrust washers (bearings) and crank by holding it down instead of going into neutral at stop.
Do you push your clutch all the way in when shifting ? Or just on first ? I have a new 13 wrx - started putting clutch to floor every shift but now I'm shifting with clutch just past grab point but don't know if it hurts the trany or clutch ?
Just my $0.02 but i would say STI all day, obviously depending on the year. The number one reason i would go with an STI is that the WRX transmissions are complete junk. Although some of the older STIs had problems with ringland failure which is big money to fix. But anyway both the cars can be made fast WRX or STI and the STIs only came in a hatchback 2008 up. I have a 2002 WRX but my dream car is a 2005 STI.
I have a 2009 Forester 5 speed manual. Later on I will do an STI swap but for now... do you still recommend I shift at 3000 even though my car is a 2.5, 5 speed manual?
i shift at 2000 rpm straight road, 2500rpm uphill and i find is more gentle to the my sti (int driving mode) fuel consumption 20mpg +
for sport mode i shift at 2000rpm for normal less than 2300 rpm for uphill
sportsharp 1700rpm normal, 2200 upper hill

i drive a first gen scion xb. i shift around 2500 by myself and 3000 if i have passengers or if im on an incline, closer to 3500. maybe even higher if im carrying a lot of weight. 100hp isnt a lot to work with :(
Hey mike! My names also mike lol, but this summer I finally might be able to get a subaru WRX or STI!! From your opinion, since you've now driven your car for awhile, would you prefer the hatchback model or sedan model? And if you could change, would you prefer having that little extra power with an STI or do you like having the WRX? It'd be great if you could reply! :D
for everyday driving, the evo feels more powerful with the turbo spooling earlier, along with the clutch being really smooth. But subarus are much funner imo, and i mean what is so promising about a mitsubishi ? not bashing but being honest
