    In my table, Each player keeps track of how much commander damage they have dealt to other players. And uh... It happens Very often. Specially when you have unblockable commanders. Billion life gain and Teferi protections with Damage can't be prevented on board.
    Also. Commander damage is dealt per commander. So if a player has two commanders, Then each commander has to be kept track of
    And if you Copy a commander, They are also commanders that deal separate commander damage.
    But you know what really should be changed? Fucking Poison

    • @kaiboertien
      @kaiboertien 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I think you are mostly correct: if you copy a commander, the copy isn't a commander. It is just a legendary creature. "Commanderness" for lack of a better word is inherent to the specific object you placed in the command zone at the start of the game (and none other)

    • @danelo13
      @danelo13 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @kaiboertien ah. I double checked and you are right only the card is a commander. It seems the program I used to play to emulate commander had some wrong rules? Oh well.

    You're right Baumi. Egg came first, from something that almost consider to be a chicken.

    • @evanmatthews2159
      @evanmatthews2159 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can argue that you wouldn't define it as a chicken until after it's hatched and grown.

  • @Guedez1
    @Guedez1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    That depends on the specifics:
    "THE EGG" came first, as it does not specify which kind of egg, but that's a boring answer for boring people
    "The chicken egg" answer now depends on the definition of "chicken egg".
    Is a chicken egg an "egg laid by a chicken" or an "egg that has a chicken inside"? That definition answers the question of which came first.

  • @patrickdodd2016
    @patrickdodd2016 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    The question, "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?", can be answered in Aristotelian terms. The egg is the efficient cause, ie the "how" the thing came to be. The chicken is the final cause, ie the "why" the thing came to be. In this way, the question can be rephrased as such: "Which came first: the way by which a thing came to be or the final reason for the thing to exist in the first place?". In a chronological understanding of the chicken, surely the egg comes first. However, it is generally the case for most thing that what is last in intention is first in action. This is to say that I left my house before I got to the store. However, I wanted to go to the store and that caused me to leave the how. The efficient cause of my trip to the store (the leaving of the house) only happened because the final cause (the arrival at the store) occurred first in the form of a desire to go to the store. On a metaphysical scale, given a sort of creator, the chicken is first in intention since the egg is only made to become a chicken and is therefore first. However, the egg is first chronologically in a system of ordered evolution to make the chicken.
    Also, this is my first comment on TH-cam, and of course, it is on philosophy.

      @riccardomazzaro1901 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Aristotelian philosophy is pretty dated tbh, and not functional to understand the world with the tools we have today. There is no finality to an object like an egg: the egg can evolve into a chicken, but it also can evolve into something else, like an omelette, a dead chicken or something else entirely. There is no natural course of events because all of those events are natural: it is natural for an egg to be eaten by a predator, like a human, it is natural for it to grow into a chicken and it is natural for a genetic anomaly to make it so the chicken never comes out of the egg. A finalistic view of biology is just very lackluster, in my opinion.

    Surely the inverse win condition is more interesting... Deal x amount of commander damage (doesn't matter who you damage) in order to win.
    You only need to track one set of damage, and it doesn't incentivise beating down on a specific player?

    its possible for a chicken to come before an egg if chickens evolved from a live-birthing animal, and then evolved egg laying, but that was certainly not the case in real life

    Between the chicken and the egg obviously the chicken came first. It said "I think therefore I am" thus proving it's existence into being. Whereas, the egg is a big dummy so it could not think and therefore could not prove it's existence. "The egg in extension is an extension of the chicken's existence as it needs the chicken to think for it's existence into being",so I thought. Maybe I am?

    EGG come first, you can genetic enginering egg, but not a living chicken.
    about TCG game, or any other competitive game with multiple target player and not 1 vs 1 game... aiming 1 specific person is called "bad manner" is offensive word in competition world.
    but it is part of strategy and it is legal. might be mental war.. might be the person is very strong, i think it is dumb to let strong opponent got a chance to play his game in the competition, unless it is just friendly match. as a dota player you should know letting a carry/strong mid late game having free time walk in the park is a mistake, even keep aiming weak target nonstop as a late game hero got good benefit easy money. what i considered BAD MANNER in competitive game is flaming, disrespect move like toying around with your enemies when you can kill them, throwing a game. CMIIW , just my opinion

    Complete Magic noob here, but interested why from a game design point commander damage encourages beating down losers? Surely for a mechanic that is only very rarely used (and I assume then only in the late game) you should always try and target the player you think you’re most likely to end up 1v1 against to maximise your chance of winning, which would lead it to becoming a mechanic that beats down winners

    @VonTimmelandDer42 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    if you want to take thr Chicken or egg question literal the true question should be. What came first The Chicken or the Chickenegg? Now the answer depends on your definition of a chickenegg. Is a chickenegg an Egg that was layn by a chicken and therefor come after the chicken or is a chickenegg an Egg that hatches into a chicken and therefor the Chivken came first.
    In actuality the line when the first animal became a "true" chicken is really blurry so it really depends on definitions to define what came first.

    You seem to have quite an interesting PoV on casual. Casual play does NOT mean, that you dont try to win. It just means that you arent reducing your options to the most optimal patterns, that you dont try to win at any cost.
    If you arent playing to win, by your very own words regarding the option to strike back if someone would kill you, you shouldnt be allowed to play because you arent going to win in any case but are just playing kingmaker. Its terrible to play with someone that doesnt play to win cause it can lead to very frustrating games. I had games were a players only goal was to prevent anyone from losing, I had games were someone would just stax , wipe the boards, destroy all lands again and again but without striving for a win. Thats fun for maybe one meme round, but it pretty much instantly gets annoying. Very much the same as someone taking their roided cedh deck and winning before other players were even allowed to play their first card with a turn 1 witherbloom apprentice into chain of smog. But there, the game is atleast over quick, you arent left to rot because the player will mess up everyone elses gameplan without bringing the game to a conclusion.
    Its entirely different to go for some convoluted or janky wincon, but unless its just to explain the rules or something your deck should have a somewhat consistent strategy to win in mind.
    Casual also means that you dont try your hardest to win, maybe you dont go for infect, voltron, stax or mld decks cause you think they arent fun to play against on a not so serious table.
    Anyways, to the points.
    There are so many ways to reliably and easily track commander damage im seriously surprised to hear it listed as an issue.
    A) many are by now utilizing apps that are made for commander like you see in the shows, which usually have a feature that allows for the tracking of commander damage (also different commanders dont track the same com damage, so if partners get involved or your own commander stolen you can have quite the party.
    B) just use paper, everyone either notes down how much they took, or how much they dealt. easy
    C) use d20, anything more than a d20 is death, so just get some color coded d20 for your playgroup (or everyone their own with a color for the player, w.e.) and just use them. Chances are you or the organizer got a bunch of them around anyways.
    Wincon for gates? Mazes end, Wincon for Vamps? besides go wide or some lifedraining aristocrats combo, go big is also part of the vamp arsenal, so yes, also commander damage, not to mention that eminence is among the most broken mechanics and edgar has one of the best.
    Why are lifegain decks "bad"? Because it doesnt protect you against winconditions that dont care about your hp total. The fact that everyone has access to commander damage is a giant part of that . Commander damage, infect, mill, infinites and whatever other combo kill you can get together, only a very limited amount of them are affected by your total hp, and the lifegain decks that win dont win just because of their life, but because they have other cards that allow them to win with it, and the most common aetherflux doesnt require much lifegain focus at all in your deck in the first place. Remove com damage and considering that the others arent all that casual friendly thats just a weird slope to go down.
    The point of those rules is to allow for variety in play, and changing any of the wincons will just change up the meta , usually not improving the game in the least which should be very obvious.
    You can interact with it tho, boost the creature, steal the creature goad it to force it at somebody else, remove creatures pre blockers to allow it to go through, grant it combat tricks, prevent it from dealing damage to safe someone from taking it etc..
    Double the damage from commanders? Fixes nothing, just breaks in other places. infect, double strike, lifelink, effects scaling with damage dealt. Worst part is, it literally changes nothing about the other issues you raised cause literally the only case the person wont die with doubled damage if he had died with com damage instead is if its lifegain.
    Making it only combat damage is exactly so you can interact with it, how stupid would it be to count effect damage with the amount of cards that can easily just randomly create 10+ effect damage to a player from nothing.
    Other game mechanics push it out of relevancy, so should we remove wincons besides decking out cause dying to combat damage prevents your loss to drawing through all your cards? no.
    thats just a nonsensical argument.
    And sorry, but 40 hp is to high? Its so easy to burn through them, reduce the hp pool and you just change what combos are strong, nothing else. would just make it faster , shift the meta to more aggro and you see even less of the cards.
    Like the only take i can agree with is that it can be quite unfun to eat those 21 turn 4 because you didnt get your defenses up in time, and then watch the game continue on for a while because the player used his ressources or the others got their forts up and he now cant get through, but atleast im just happy for that player cause he got to do his thing and get myself something to drink cause i dont take it all that seriously to lose in a game. And considering the average voltron deck is about as stealthy as a kaiju, either you would have quite a bad game anyways, you didnt mulligan accordingly or your table doesnt have rule 0 conversations about what decks you play into each others which prevents playing into entire counters.

    • @pendotxl822
      @pendotxl822 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Or in Short: You also usually dont need the rules about decking out, still they have a reason to be there. Its really not that hard to track, so if it really only rarely is relevant, there is no reason to remove it , since its important in the cases where it matters. The "Solutions" would just mess the game up on another level and just shift the meta to something else without resolving any of the actual issues.

    The egg comes first because the creature whch very laid the egg tht created the first chicken was, itself, not technically a chicken. Though it likely greatly resembled one, there would've been some crucial biological difference that precluded it being classified as any kind of chicken.

    Well, if you question about any egg, obviously eggs from fishes or hard shell eggs from reptiles came first.
    However, if you consider a chicken egg, the chicken egg couldn't have come first. There was a bird that looked like a chicken that laid an egg, let's call it a "chocken", and the first chicken came from that egg, but that egg was not a chicken egg, it was a chocken egg. The first chicken egg came when the first chicken laid an egg.
