    IMPORTANT: UPDATE 14 June 2021: there is now work going on with UBER trying to come to Jamaica, but they still require additional licensing, so the operation is not properly set up yet. Some drivers began working for Uber in Kingston, Jamaica, even though they don't have the legal right to do so yet.
    NB: Some of the footage was filmed before covid pandemic. Note: there are various restrictions to using public transport in Jamaica during covid, please check with your hotel/host about the upto date rules. Thank you for watching!

    When I was growing up in Jamaica, I rode on everything to high school: Big bus, minivan, cars, dump truck, cane truck. We were in the back of truck with cooking gas cylinders coming from school and the driver was going so fast one of cylinders slammed into the side of the truck and broke the top off, releasing gas everywhere. All the men managed to “hop off” the driving truck, but we were kids so we huddled down in a corner of the truck. Eventually the truck stopped and they removed the cylinder from the truck.
    These days, I can’t ride minibus and taxis anymore. It’s my own private transport and Knutsford Express for me. Me put in mi time. One thing though, when I am back in Jamaica and driving my car, I don’t leave anyone on the road. Anyone stop me for a drive, I pick them up.

    I learned the hard way on my first trip to Jamaica 🤭. This video is so on point, will help so many. Really like your videos Irie, and how into depth you go!
    My sister and I learned how getting around works by talking to the locals, they are so nice and helpful. Just be respectfull and dont be so darn cheap! Love Jamaica, its so beatiful and its people💚 Have a great random conversation and enjoy.
    On the second trip i traveled by myself, had "uncle" Devon drive me everywhere (he stays near Margarita Ville in Mentego). Super trust worthy! Went hicking at Blue Mountain, visited blue hole. Then got real brave, rented a car and drove to Port Antonio by myself 😍. So so beatiful! So much to explore, its safer than California or Mexico, where i am from. Get out of those darn resorts and make some good friends 🙋🏽‍♀️. Cant wait to go back! Love from San Francisco 💗

  • @TheAmorchef
    @TheAmorchef 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    This was great. As one who travels in Jamaica it took me a bit to understand their system. One thing that I believe was missing was how the depots work. I traveled from Negril to Port Antonio in about four hours. I was lucky to jump from one minibus to another at the depots in Lucea, Mo'Bay and Ochie. Actually beat the Knutsford by 15 minutes...you meet so many great people. And the conductors are a hoot. When I stay in Mo'Bay I have a local MAXI fellow who takes me about when I need him. He is busy but we arrange during slow times. His name is Oneil. There is a taxi spot outside MargaritaVille on the Hip Stip. Many great drivers there...once this plague thing is under control I am back to JA...
    Blessings

    Another excellent informative video. It reminded me of all the adventures I had with transport in jamaica as a visitor over the last 20 years when I was much younger. I've used route taxis, ( where there was no windows and the bottom of the taxi was so rusty you could see the tarmac) mini buses, chartered mini buses and cars sat in the back of pick up trucks delivering furniture.. I have also given lifts to locals and tourists hitch hikers. These days I hire a car and do my own driving for convenience.

    Lots of people will be fascinated by your amazing videos on our BEAUTIFUL & MAGNIFICENT country!!! Lots of Jamaicans do not realize that the word "Route" is the common French word for "Road" and that sound of "ou" is "ou" in French (I am teacher and speaker of foreign languages myself). I remember once (in the morning, by the street, in front of a pharmacy) telling an illegitimate taxi man that what he was doing was wrong (driving a car with a white license plate instead of a red one) and his eyes started to bulge in anxiety (while gazing at me) and he eventually became speechless. Fortunately he was caught by the police driving people in that same due to his resistance and persistence. He once saw me again and cussed me out for no reason (he was both angry and sick).

    Love your videos!!! As a Jamaican overseas, I migrated over 30 years ago and even I have visited a few times over years, I often stay at the resorts, however watching your videos have really enlightened me, and more so since I’ve been thinking of returning home. 🙏🇯🇲

    Hi Irie, good day, just viewing this vlog, it is very informative, did not know the difference between the Taxis and the Route of travel. Fancy that, it took you travelling all the way from Ukraine to Jamaica to teach us about Route Taxis. Keep up the good work.

    Been to JA so many times - but the many methods of transport have always mystified me (always rent a car since have kids), despite my JA husband who used to run taxi . You've outlined the systems and options so clearly - I really appreciate this one!

    That is really helping. It is not easy to understand which and how? Here one can really understand like a local. Knutsford is a very comfortable and a modern Bus line. But for the short distances and all day rides it was confusing to me, too. Plus I want to travel like locals, which I can do now. I understood the main things to know and it makes me feel much more comfortable, now that I know how I can move around far or distant destinations. Very usefull information, well structured! You juat know cause you did it yourselve.Great job again, Irie !

    Knutsford is the best way to get from city to city, airport to airport. Cheap, safe,comfortable, clean, and air conditioned buses.👍👍👍👍Much less expensive than any taxis. But make your reservation in advance. They fill up fast at certain times.
