    Simon spot on as usual with his assessment. Whilst Bale has won a lot of silverware in his career ( especially at Real Madrid ) a lot of that was down to his teammates rather than what he brought to the team. He will be remembered for being constantly injured, falling out with his club and playing golf. The MLS move is purely about money ; if he had ambition, or the physicality to compete at the highest level, he would have gone to a club within the top 5 Euro leagues.

    • @campfirefootball
      @campfirefootball ปีที่แล้ว

      When you say the MLS move is purely about money, are you under the impression the league is flush with cash like Saudi Arabia? Because it really isn't. Teams have pretty strict salary caps. They have a limit on Designated Players (those they can pay the top tier). Yes he will be well paid, but to think he's getting money he wouldn't have received elsewhere is not accurate. Premier League clubs are some the richest in world football, so if it was about money, he could have stayed in England.
      But maybe he preferred the idea of living in Los Angeles, playing in a new league, and getting out of the scope of the English media and all the people who criticize him for his ambition, golf, etc. He'll get a lot of love here. People from every city are going to pay to see Bale, and not to abuse him. LAFC are top of the table, they have Carlos Vela, just signed Chiellini, and are odds on to win MLS Cup. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

    • @djsuth7727
      @djsuth7727 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@campfirefootball Sugar coat it all you want, it's still about money ( plus lifestyle, sun & golf ). His reputation and injury record is such that most major EPL clubs didn't want him. His choices were, essentially, Cardiff or the MLS. The MLS is a far more lucrative deal for him.

    • @campfirefootball
      @campfirefootball ปีที่แล้ว

      @@djsuth7727 For sure. But as you said it's about $$, lifestyle, sun, golf, and he can live under the radar in LA instead of being recognized everywhere he goes. That's a pretty full package. Then you look at the football side of it. Sure, it's not the top level. But he'll get to play with Chiellini, Carlos Vela, and a bunch of guys who will be stoked to have him around. He'll probably really enjoy it. Put all that together and Cardiff sounds pretty bleak, as well as most other options that he may have had in Europe.

    • @ruddock7
      @ruddock7 ปีที่แล้ว

Bale especially in finals stepped up when others like CR7 except against Juve vanished. What Simon needs to understand is when you have as many constant injuries like Bale has and also missing out on the last WC it put's doubts in the belief in your own body and he want's to be fit for what may be his final hurrah in This WC.

    Bale has never been the type of player that liked the physical side of the game. Harry Redknapp at one point told the physios at Spurs to stop attending to him every time he went down in training. That's why he always wanted to go to La Liga and has said many times how he prefers the league's more technical nature. When Spurs refused to sign him this summer, he had a choice of playing in the championship at Cardiff or the less physically demanding MLS. I think the choice was fairly straightforward really. It's also worth noting that Robbie Keane went to LA Galaxy a few years younger than Bale is now but didn't get any stick at the time. Keane enjoyed a fantastic 5 years there, becoming an MLS legend that was loved by the fans. I'm sure Bale wouldn't mind receiving the same after all those years in Madrid.

    Gareth needed to adapt his game earlier once those reoccurring injuries affected his pace. I wouldn't call him a flat-track bully because there was a technical brilliance in his shooting, crossing, etc. Still, unlike Ronaldo, I don't think he had the ambition or instinct to transition into the 'fox in the box' striker which would prolong his career at the top. That said, he won big trophies and will forever be a hero in Wales, and many more talented footballers than him would envy that legacy.

I think the doubters are justified in a way because its just so confusing that he could be world class one minute, doing things that only a handful of players could do, to being mediocre is confusing. I think with Gareth it was a mental thing. I know at Spurs it took a long time for him to come out of his shell and play with confidence and lack of fear. Just think he is basically a quiet, shy gentle soul who just happens to have an amazing talent but all the other stuff that goes on in football just isn't easy for him to deal with. Agree with Simon. Gareth Bale at Spurs for a couple of seasons was unplayable, probably up there with the highest levels of performance we've ever seen in the league, if not the highest (maybe Ronaldo 07-09 and Henry are similar). He genuinely looked like he was the heir to Ronaldo and Messi.
    Despite all his silverware and great performances at Madrid, he didn't live up to that, not even close. He played really well for the first couple of seasons and had some amazing moments, and those are important. But overall, there was a LOT of mediocre, poor or marginal performance in there, no doubt not helped by other factors like injury, failure to integrate culturally, Zidane and others.
    So he's a very very good footballer. Great even. But you can't just judge it on silverware. Are Nicky Butt, Phil Neville or Casemiro all time greats? No

      I believe Gareth Bale can comfortably be considered as one of the all time great British footballers. You are certainly correct in that honours do not necessarily dictate whether you are great or not. But Bale has 5 European cups I believe, which is unprecedented for a British footballer. And that sort of statistic automatically puts him in the great category, whether he was inconsistent over a long period of time or not. What's more is that he had a huge part to play in some of those cup wins.
      Everybody's criteria for "greatness" is different I suppose.

Fair enough he scored the goal v Liverpool, but other than his first season at Madrid, he’s been pretty poor - especially with his talent. He was offered to go other clubs and he chose to play golf, sit on the bench, and take the mental wages, which priced anyone out of buying him.
