DIY Chalk Painted Brick Fireplace French Country Farmhouse Style

  • Welcome to The Painted South!
    In today's video, I show you how to update that dated brick fireplace with DIY homemade chalk paint using Plaster of Paris and some leftover paint. I had been debating for 3 years on whether or not to paint the brick and finally decided to go for it!
    My favorite home décor style is French Country however my house is traditional Georgian so I am trying to blend the styles and make it work. This paint technique definitely brightened my entire living room and added that little bit of old world French flair it needed. I can't wait for my handy husband to complete the look and build the mantle and side cabinets or shelves.
    I hope you enjoy the video. Please like, comment, share and subscribe to my channel for more videos on DIY home renovations, fun decorating projects and how-to tutorials.
    Thanks for watching!
    Xoxoxo!

    Out of the many painting methods for brick fireplaces, THIS IS THE ONE I choose! Thanks for posting your method. I’m finally convinced I will not regret painting mine.

    I've seen dozens of DIY white wash brick tutorials. This one was simply the best! Your way of doing it had more style to the brick, you've truly created the original white wash look! Others have tried and failed by diluting paint with water, and just painted the bricks away. They didnt add the secret ingredient, which was the dabbing on each brick, keeping some of the original color of the brick, to peak through. Plus, you used plaster of paris, which I think, gave it that gorg effect. Thank you for sharing...you've inspired me to try this, as im sure you did for many others out there. :)

    I researched many videos on how to do an easy technique for German Schmear and found this video to be the best. Instructions were right on and loved that there was no unnecessary talking. My brick came out great. Thank you!

    I searched the internet for days to find the right method transform a brick wall in the great room of the home we just purchased. I knew I wanted a German Schmear look, but I was intimidated by the thought of using mortar, I didn't want a whitewash look and I definitely didn't want to just paint it. I felt comfortable with the idea of using paint with plaster of paris and loved your final product. I wanted to have a bit more of the brick show through, but this method allowed me to choose how much or how little I used, which was perfect. I'm so happy with my final product and wanted to say thanks for the inspiration! The back side of this wall is a fireplace in our game room and I'll be extending the treatment as soon as the contractors are done with our remodel.

  • @willothewispl

    That came out exactly right. A few years back I rented this old apt. Had a beautiful brick fireplace. The stones were different from yours. It was old and dirty and burnt. Well we painted the room, took up the carpet and left the wood. Then we painted the fireplace exactly the way you just did. The landlord was furious when we told him. But, once he saw it he just loved it. Had us do the fireplace in his home in place of a months rent. So it pays to paint. I love to paint. Have painted lots of things over the years. Yes indeed, paint can do wonders.

    I am getting ready to do this to our fireplace in our 1850's farmhouse. I was going to use mortar but think I will do it this way instead. Can't wait to see how I do with this project but it looks quite easy! Yours is beautiful. Thank you for the video!

    My first house was a 1940 English Tudor and it had a similar fireplace with brick but only up to the mantel, except it had slate stone on the hearth. I could not decide whether I wanted to paint that brick or not. About 3 years after we purchased my "handyman special" dream home and all the main remodeling was finished, we had to relocate to a different state for health reasons of a family member and had to sell the house. Sigh! I always wonder if the new owners went ahead and painted the brick! I enjoy watching your videos so much because it reminds me of that time and because you have so many decorating ideas out of the ordinary gorgeous!

    I love your paint technique on your fireplace. Mine was solid white when we purchased the house. Our porch was red brick, which I painted to match both ends of our house. It makes for one cohesive look. I used a wire brush to clean the brick and just painted with a good paint, and a very thick roller of course. It turned out beautifully. I love painted brick. I’m looking forward to more DIY projects of your home.

      Hi Susan! I love painted brick, too! If our mortar had not been so dingy, I probably would have left it as is. However, painting it certainly brightened up the room! I will have tons of home renovation videos, but we postponed those until after Christmas because we have too much going on. Keep an eye out for those starting in January! 👍🏻 Have a wonderful weekend! 🧡 Xoxoxo

Music background was also a nice choice and volume appropriate.

I will post videos as soon as each project gets completed! Let me know how your fireplace turns out! Love this! I had painters do my fireplace in flat white, and while I like it better than the red brick, I don’t love it like I do your finish. Of course, now I want to sand blast it off or repaint and begin again. Your brick is great, probably the hand made ones, and one or two look inside out.

    • @thepaintedsouth
      @thepaintedsouth  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Linda! Thank you! Maybe you can use a wire brush to gently scrap off paint in some areas? Or a paint remover with it? You don't want to damage the brick, but most newer brick is pretty durable. Older brick may be crumbly. Just a thought! Best wishes! Xoxoxo

    I *REALLY* don’t like the white mortar. Is there a way to go over the gray (the one that is…well, mostly on there) in spots with some brown glaze in spots and maybe a white glazing type technique in other spots? I *LOVE* that island!!! That’s gotta feel good! Good to see you smiling! :) I wish I could come over and help ya with that brick! I would if I could, but I’m in Kansas City! Your frustration with it makes me feel so bad for ya! I think some of it is just overthinking, the lighting, the other colors in the kitchen or lack there of (for now)…but mostly overthinking!! Honestly, that’s a huge (YUGE!!!) project to take on by yourself! I bet now that the island situation is settled, it’ll be much easier! I love that ochre color!!! Love the placemats too! And, those little blue jars! Ugh….WANT! Lol I can’t even! Whadda, I know anyway!?!? Keep smiling!! Keep us in the loop!

    You have come into my life at the right time.. I have a fireplace just like yours and had no idea what to do with it. My next problem is what to do with the dull rough sanded boards surrounding the fireplace. They are dark mottled rough dark brown. If you've ever done something like that let me know.

      Hello Roberta! Without seeing it, I hate to offer advice, but here goes... lol. Can the wood be taken off and planed down? Or possibly even have trim added to it to create a different style also? Wood is easily transformed with the right tools and sandpaper. I always look at the shape of something, because anything can be painted or even just restained. I wish I could see exactly what you are working with so I could help more. Best wishes! Xoxoxo

    I just did mine yesterday and could not believe how good that looks, so happy! But then I saw your other video where you repainted it)))) it does look great though, both variations, just wanted to thank you for making this video, since your brick just the same as mine, and it worked perfectly!!!

      Yay! I'm so glad your project turned out great! We actually just sold that house a few days ago and I will miss the fireplace. If you ever decide to change the color again, it is very easy and the options are endless with paint! Thank you for leaving a kind message. I'm so glad the video helped. 🤗 Have a wonderful week! Hi Kaitlin! Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it! Here is what I used, but you can certainly used a variety of similar products and get the same result. I just used what I had on hand.
      •Plaster of Paris (adjust amount to achieve desired consistency)
      •Glidden Paint with Primer in Eggshell finish (soft white color)
      •3" wide Chip Brush (cut bristles down to 1" length)
      •Paint stir stick
      •Mixing container
      •Hot water, but you can omit that step and add directly to paint if you want a thicker, textured consistency.

    I am watching this video on behalf of a friend with a brick fireplace. This is the best method for indoor brick that I have seen so far. I am going to search for the best product to use for her to randomly stain some bricks soft black and other other brown. So it is not just red showing through. The concern here being that the darker stain does not blend in with wet white paint/plaster mix when she is applying the white washing. If you have suggestions for the under stain, I would really appreciate it. Beautiful work and thank you for sharing.

      @thepaintedsouth  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marie! You are a great friend to help her so much. 🤗 You are exactly right about the stain bleeding through the paint. There is a possibility it wouldn't, but I would suggest using chalk paints in darker colors over the red brick in certain areas or cover as much as she wants. Darker grays and browns will tone it down and look great peeking through the white. There are many premade colors or she could DIY her own with the same method I used for the white paint, but in dark colors. I hope that helps! Let me know how it turns out! I would love to see photos if you want to send them on my Instagram page- The Painted South. I hope you have a wonderful week! Xoxoxo

    I'm so excited to try this method of painting my brick! My brick is not a fireplace but in my kitchen (surrounds my double ovens, stovetop/indoor grill.) Should I seal the brick around my stovetop? Also - if I cannot get the shading exactly as I want, could I just cover the entire brick (solidly paint)? What are your thoughts?
