My mother had a graduate student from Poland in the late '70s. He went to the store with my mother once and was nearly in tears to see the meat available. At that time, meat was scarce in Poland. I'm so glad those days are past.

I also remember those years, went to Poland twice in the 70s . I remember the meat shops completely empty and kolejki(lineups) everywhere. I asked my cousin what they were for. It was summer and some peaches from Turkey were available. This was so foreign to me, I was in shock, being a spoiled young lady from 🇨🇦.when I now see videos of Poland I am in awe. I so want to return, health willing. Btw love your cooking style, very much like my mothers. My kids live for meat pierogi, koleczki, golabki, rolady, barszcz z uszkami . My mom was from Kolo, central Poland . My parents immigrated to Canada from Dachau in 1947. My father survived Auschwitz #162978, he was fr. Bochnia and mom was taken as forced labour to a farm in Germany for 5 years as a teenager. They met at DP camp and were sponsored by a couple in Kingston, Ontario. We are so blessed. People have no idea. Thankyou for your videos!

@@andrewmichels7804 Your father was lucky to survive. My father's cousin retired to Poland and worked with the Underground around Auschwitz. He used up all the money he'd saved in the US for his retirement, putting it toward the work of the Underground. When the war was over, he came back here and said he never wanted to go back to Poland because of what he'd seen.

There is a french movie The Gendarme in New York with Louis de Funes from the seventies. They the gendarmes were searching meat shops to buy meat which is not packed in cellophane as they were preparing dishes French way and it was a blasphemy to use cellophaned meat. In Poland then there was a saying that before the war there was a shop sign "The butcher" and there was meat inside while in a communist times opposite a sign said "Meat" and inside there was only a butcher. During a movie show when on the screen appeared pictures of NY meat shops all audience started to shout and behave as football fans and it was like anticommunist demonstration.

I am half - maybe more - Polish and I was surprised how much I love pickled fish (and mushrooms). I avoided the pickled fish for a long time, but my grandma's love for it made me try it and I've been a convert ever since. There is not enough pickled fish in the world :) Wow, I wish our stores had a meat section as complete as yours. I always love wandering through local grocery stores when I travel - it's the best way to learn about food culture. Thanks for the trip!!

There is a large Polish Grocery Store in Ontario, Canada just outside of Toronto. It's about a 45 minute drive but worth it. They have an amazing deli, meat section, and sausages galore! Plus they have hot foods and a bakery. It's called Starsky's Fine Foods. It looks a lot like that grocery store and just a little bit smaller.

How wonderful it is to see the variety and abundance of the available products in the Free Poland. Before most of the Polish agricultural products were shipped to USSR, where we were left with a tiny pinch of our hard work. Gladly we owe our freedom to ourselves proving to the rest of the world that we are independent industrious and hard working nation. God bless Poland.

One thing I love about your channel is that you cook with real food. Seeing all the prepared foods in the store reminds me of how the big food industry controls what most people eat. I would love to see the ingredient list for some of those packaged foods. Cooking your own food always wins as you show on your channel. The pleasure derived from shopping, preparing, and eating together is lost with all the convenience foods.

That store was very reminiscent of the Real Canadian Super Store on Oxford Street East in London, Ontario. Just as big, and just as diversified. And yes, we have coin operated shopping baskets here. Sometimes the slot is for quarters, sometimes for loonies (.25 or $1) depending on the area and degree of shopper theft (too much to carry? no car? can't afford a cab? no problem, just take the cart home and abandon it somewhere along the street). It is amazing, however, just how much processed food there is everywhere in the world now. Thank you. That was fun.

Wooden spoon? It was the belt when I was a kid. When I was about 4 years old I got lost in the supermarket, I was shopping with my mum, my baby sister and my grandparents, well grandma found me first so a slap round the legs it was, then my grandad founds us so I got a slap round the ear, and when my mum got to us, yes you guessed it, another slap round the legs. I can safely say I never ever did it again. I have never once dared to back chat my mum!!!!!

This was very interesting to watch! I was kinda hoping to see the coffee/tea aisle. Which is more preferred? We are a divided household. My hubby likes one, but not the other (except when it's cold) and I tend to prefer the other but will drink his choice also. It's one of the first trivial things I try to find out about a country.

Nice to see my old stomping grounds and how it looks in 2021. I left 10 years ago. I'm sure the shitty roads still exist. YES!! it is a real problem to find a good steak in Pl.

That was fantastic! My husband Tony and I were enthralled! This so reminds me of Auchan in Bydgoszcz but your B1 is so much bigger! I’ve never seen a B1 before. Thank you so much for this. I know it sounds silly but it makes us so happy to watch- and shout slow down, I want to look! 😉. And now I’m going to show this to my UK friends and tell them THIS is what I’ve been talking about! The food and the choice is immense!! The kitchen section is immense too. I love shopping in Poland.

We really didn't realize how fast we were filming while in the store. Mark says it feels like he's moving at a snails pace, and to be honest it's a strange feeling to film in a big store like that with people looking at us like we are crazy. I will make sure we slow down from now on, and thanks for watching!

@@PolishYourKitchen oh I wasn’t complaining. I understand you’d feel a bit self conscious filming in a supermarket. We just loved it so much that we wanted to linger over the food!😄 I guess we should have paused the video!
I’m telling my family and friends who’ve been with us to Poland to watch your channel. One of the places we’d always end up going was one of the big supermarkets in Toruń, (or Kraków when we visited - about 7 times I think) and any city.
Thank you so much for bringing some Poland into our lives here in Wales during lockdown. Keep going just the way you are!

What fun! Out of curiosity, where are most of the homeware items made? Europe, China or from all over? If my parents were still alive, they would be amazed at the changes to Poland, especially this store. They travelled while it was still under communist rule. Mark, bet it would be a fun video if Anna made a pizza for you; it's not hard and does taste better than the frozen "cardboard tasting" pizzas. When I was little, papa brought home wrapped candy that had a cow on it, also there was individual fruit filled candy too. This was in the 60s so things have changed. In the US, we have stores where we bag our groceries and Aldi and other stores also require you to put in money to release a cart. Sorry, if this post is all over the place but I have watching and typing as I see something. Take care!

Helena, the homeware products come from all over the place really. We have things in our kitchen from Poland, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, England, the US, and of course China. You can still buy the Krówki, or the cow candy you talked about. They used to be a favorite treat my Mom would bring to the States when she would visit us. Thanks for watching!

I can't overstate my gratitude for you making this video! Everywhere I go, I make a point to dive into local grocery outlets and specialty food stores. This video was so perfect and fun! Thank you for this! P. S. Are there any high-end stores in Poland which specialize in Polish delicatessen?

0% Beer is becoming plentiful in the states. Also popular. I love it. Also Johnny Walker black is about $65. Green is $90 and blue is $250.00 to rich for me!

That was a fun trip. I can.not.believe how clean and put together that store is. That's a fantastic grocery store to say the least! Nothing like Super Walmart around here, usually sooo messy. It seems like Polish people (shoppers and employees alike) take pride in keeping the store presentable. Where I live (in North TX) we are getting an HEB grocery store, and we can't wait (along the lines of this store)! HEBs are primarily in central TX. The variety of foods in your meat and fish departments is great. I've seen the mall entry store in some other country too, can't remember which though. That's really different. Keep the cool videos coming!
