Because of the corruption. ASEAN has an endemic corruption system. And the people in power now don't want to give that up. So don't even compare ASEAN to anyone, it's not even close to EU. A country slaves to one master will never progress quickly. And that's a reality.
@indrabayu2169 And the rest of ASEAN is at the bottom. Sorry, Singapore can't lift up the rest of ASEAN. Dreaming of old glory doesn't make the future great. Results come from actions. Realistically i don’t think so.. i love ASEAN. But Europe is the powerhouse of high end industries.. Its true. And we can also see that the mainland ASEAN countries are also linked to each other as well. ASEAN is mostly a combination of Kra-Dai, Austrosiatic and Austronesian which is the largest (and most intelligible) out of the three. The differences of each ASEAN nations are too much, the system of government ranging between absolute monarchy to flawed democracy and to communist one party-state also the interests of each country from the view to the government and the people always take superior. Even the cultures in one country, Indonesia are still vastly different between each island not to say about the differences of culture between each nation the dream to transform ASEAN to something like EU is now nearly impossible sadly, not to talk about the conflict in Myanmar and most importantly the differences in each country’s foreign policy is still too much different, from Laos and Cambodia which are nearly Chinese puppets to the Philippines or Vietnam which nearly went to war with China due to its territorial disputes in the South China Sea. The economic inequalities between each nation is also a key factor. Singapore’s richness one of the richest country in the world compare to Myanmar which are one of the poorest country in the world there is no way Singapore’s government will agree on a deal to share its money to other country like that.

Everyone is just predicting the demise of Europe every damn week for a loooong time now and well I have seen no signs so far....
Europe is a very stable part of the world and has an insane history with HIGHLY developed societies and it will not just fall apart that easily.
Are you kidding. .. throughout the history of civilization Asia has been the center of the world, advanced civilization was born in Asia when Europe was still backward. Europe advanced only when they experienced the industrial revolution

As a Thai, I believe that ASEAN can grow much more than European Union, if not for corruption.

Im from Phils and been to many neighbors.
ASEAN will never pass anyone, period. Depending on countries, 70 to 95 percent people are struggling to get by. They can't barely afford expensive food let alone medical expenses. Why is this? Because of the corruption. ASEAN has an endemic corruption system. And the people in power now don't want to give that up. So don't even compare ASEAN to anyone, it's not even close to EU. A country slaves to one master will never progress quickly. And that's a reality.
@indrabayu2169 And the rest of ASEAN is at the bottom. Sorry, Singapore can't lift up the rest of ASEAN. Dreaming of old glory doesn't make the future great. Results come from actions. I don't see any action ASEAN has taken to make the future a comparable to the EU. All I see is endless corruption. Corruption is a slave chain to the ground that keeps you from moving. ASEAN the next 20 years will be the same as the past 20 years, a follower, not a leader in anything.

The ASEAN countries, except Singapore and Brunei, are hindered from within by ridiculous corruption. The association is maintained at the expense of tax payer's income for nothing. No meaningful decisions are made, not to be mentioned that such decisions can be ever implemented. Greetings from Vietnam.
Very true. I was thinking the same when i saw the video title. Rubbish policies, racism, corruption, extremism, apartheid, genocide... U name it we have it. Gdp rising does not reflect the normal person on the street. We are poorer than ever. Auditors, accountants can only afford to eat well for 3 weeks. Fourth week still need to forage for ingredients in parent's house (if near enough). Its ridiculous. People are going hungry!
More and more people are also living in their cars due to poor planning and high cost of travel along with extremely expensive housing compared to income. We are cheap labour for the fat cats, fat cats are the only ones who improve their lives with gdp growth.
Brunei doesn’t have corruption? Where did you get your source?
Unlike Singapore, Bruneian wishes more to work in the government sector as they are spoiled with oil money to cater the small population. Also lots of the money goes to Brunei Sultan... that is kinda like a corruption dont you think so? Just one family controlling the fate of the country?
@@leonardowynnwidodo9704 Sorry. I fact I don't know much about Brunei, just made my assumption based on the fact that we don't hear much about corrupted officials in Brunei.

Realistically i don’t think so.. i love ASEAN. But Europe is the powerhouse of high end industries.. Maybe you mean ASEAN has higher growth rate than EUROPE, but that’s typical because once a country/region is already developed, the economy stagnates. Not like developing countries in ASEAN which mostly haven’t reached their full potential. Germany’s GDP alone is a bit more than that of ASEAN.

ASEAN = 3.8 Trillion

This countries are technically linked in some way too specially Malaysia Singapore Indonesia and Philippines
Its true. And we can also see that the mainland ASEAN countries are also linked to each other as well. ASEAN is mostly a combination of Kra-Dai, Austrosiatic and Austronesian which is the largest (and most intelligible) out of the three.
Cant also deny that Southern Thai has a long and deep history with Peninsular Malaysia in the past which makes them connected culturally although they are not mutually intelligible.
As Lao person, I think Asean will never surpass Europe. 'Cuase of the corruption of the gorvenment that cuase a hundred million dollars loss on country income every year.
We don’t need to be like EU. EU was good on paper but in reality, it is not a sustainable organization (i.e. Greece). What ASEAN is now can remain status quo until such time that economic disparity is minimized between its members.
ASEAN is doing rarely well as it is, eu system is not applicable to them.
