      The biggest reason is manufacturing moves out of China to lower cost countries nearby; Vietnam in particular is poised to take more from China, and when oil companies starts exploration, oil-export from Vietnam will supercharge their economy. It’s why the Chinese bandit state north of Vietnams borders has intruded onto other countries waters.

    As a Thai person, I have heard that there will be an AEC since 2015, but until today I have not seen any progress which is clearly shown to be done. Therefore, it is thought that it would be difficult to develop as much as the European Union.

    • @zalu8894

      ASEAN is the most diverse region in every aspect, and we cannot emulate the European Union, which tends to be more homogeneous. However, ASEAN has the potential to excel even more than the European Union.
      If you don't have business or work related to ASEAN countries, you won't feel it. As an Indonesian, I have found it much easier to import and export to Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines compared to 10 years ago, both in terms of regulatory ease and technical issues such as tax compensation and customs inspections at the airport. If you are from Thailand, you must be aware that industries like Gojek (Indonesia), Grab (Malaysia), Shopee (Singapore) are thriving in ASEAN countries.
      Even being a member of ASEAN itself has given us special privileges to visit each other without having to obtain a visa. This will undoubtedly stimulate economic productivity in various sectors, including labor, tourism, students, and others.
      Last year, when I was in Thailand, I could already use payment scanning applications from Indonesia to shop in Thai stores because our national banking systems are integrated. Isn't this a significant progress?

Gdp rising does not reflect the normal person on the street. We are poorer than ever. Auditors, accountants can only afford to eat well for 3 weeks. Fourth week still need to forage for ingredients in parent's house (if near enough). Its ridiculous. People are going hungry!
      More and more people are also living in their cars due to poor planning and high cost of travel along with extremely expensive housing compared to income. We are cheap labour for the fat cats, fat cats are the only ones who improve their lives with gdp growth.

    Realistically i don’t think so.. i love ASEAN. But Europe is the powerhouse of high end industries.. Maybe you mean ASEAN has higher growth rate than EUROPE, but that’s typical because once a country/region is already developed, the economy stagnates. Not like developing countries in ASEAN which mostly haven’t reached their full potential. Germany’s GDP alone is a bit more than that of ASEAN.
    Germany = 4.4 Trillion
    ASEAN = 3.8 Trillion
    That’s just Germany, maybe ASEAN could surpass Germany in the future. But as a whole, Europe has 24 Trillion GDP. Doesn’t look like that’s in the “near” future.

    The differences of each ASEAN nations are too much, the system of government ranging between absolute monarchy to flawed democracy and to communist one party-state also the interests of each country from the view to the government and the people always take superior. Even the cultures in one country, Indonesia are still vastly different between each island not to say about the differences of culture between each nation the dream to transform ASEAN to something like EU is now nearly impossible sadly, not to talk about the conflict in Myanmar and most importantly the differences in each country’s foreign policy is still too much different, from Laos and Cambodia which are nearly Chinese puppets to the Philippines or Vietnam which nearly went to war with China due to its territorial disputes in the South China Sea. The economic inequalities between each nation is also a key factor. Singapore’s richness one of the richest country in the world compare to Myanmar which are one of the poorest country in the world there is no way Singapore’s government will agree on a deal to share its money to other country like that.

    In terms of combined GDP that may be the case but the EU’s advantage and what made it work is it functioned as being like one country where citizens of each member country freely can travel back and forth but ASEAN does not have that yet plus the means of travel by land is what made EU as dynamic and unified as it is, ASEAN is separated by giant gaps of ocean so i disagree with this video.

    What can you expect when a already successful union want miseries rather than peace and prosperity due to haughtiness and greed.

    It mentions the Philippines having the highest economic growth but does not dig deeper as to why, unlike Indonesia which has brief reasons at least. All ASEAN videos on this channel do not give justice to the Philippines.

    Every ASEAN country is indeed moving forward and developing well except Malaysia.

      Every country shines in its own time. In the 90's Thailand and Malaysia grew rapidly and now it's Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam. It has always been like that. The important thing is we continue to move forward together as one asean. Our children will reap the fruit of what we have worked so hard for.

    It should be mentioned with the fact that China has a huge role in Asean. Especially many billionaires and millionaire in Asean have chinese ancestors.
