Fun story. Grew up going to drag racing. I was probably 8 or 9, top fuel fired up so naturally you run over. Why's nobody stood here for a great view? Stand there. Suddenly realise why... tear gas 😂 walk off streaming with tears. Lesson learned!

I love those 1995 vhs recorder footage
Was actually Facebook live, with poor signal, then downloaded. It was before the option of saving to phone at the time.
Combine propane and nitric acid heat to 450c and this wonderful eye watering, throat burning stuff is born, gotta love TF.
Saw a nitro bike once too long on the start line.... When it gets too rich, it floods the cylinders and that "whaarp whaarp..." disappear, then it goes "tick tick..." when you whack the throttle then, it goes BOOOM! Instant bomb and very expensive pudding.... Dangerous game, but hey, who doesn't like the smell of nitro in the morning hmmm?

Actually, Top Fuel and Nitro are the same thing. Top Fuel is Nitro-methane, and Top Alcohol is straight alcohol. Well technically they mix Nitro-methane into alcohol, they don't burn straight Nitro-methane. They actually start the engine on alcohol at first because starting up on nitro right off would blow the heads off, that's why they do a "dry crank" with the ignition off before actually firing it. That's to make sure there's no lingering Nitro-methane in the cylinders. The sound is the engine running on straight alcohol then they turn on the fuel pumps switching to Nitro-methane.
Here all along I just thought it was the name of the class
Thing makes more power at idle than most cars on the street do full out.

Those pit crew guy's are machines in themselves being able to stand there and not have a gas mask on or anything because that nitromethane will kick your ass lol

It doesn't switch to nitro. They turn on the secondary fuel pumps. The burnout is done with only primary pumps on. Right before staging, the crew chief switches on the telemetry and secondaries.

I held down the front end of my dads nitro harley from age 10 - 30 . Every week in our garage and weekends at the track. I'm now 45 and my dad is 70. You don't need a respirator. Ear protection is probably a good idea when your right beside it

As they have no gearbox the wheel turn whilst the motor is running, unless you have your foot on the clutch fully and the brakes applied. Nitro is a 4 second controlled explosion. At least that's what i tell people.
At what moment did it run on nitro? I've never seen this before. It all sounded the same to me except at the end when it spluttered to a stop.

Great question John. The initial fire is on alcohol or gasoline and stays running on the mixture from the squirt bottle until the pumps pick up the nitro fuel and that's when it "Switches". It then runs on "both" pump on Nitro in the burnout and pre stage, BUT! The driver actually "trims" the fuel volume with the shut-off by-bass lever in the cockpit. Then what is termed "Putting it on the high side" or "The second Pump", is actually the driver closing the shut-off all the way and delivering 100% of the nitro that the pumps are pumping to the engine. They start the engines on gasoline to help build up cylinder pressure because the nitro doesn’t ignite by heat/spark alone. You can tell when it switches over because the engine makes a different sound and smoke starts shooting out of the exhaust from the increase in force created by the explosion of the nitro in the cylinders. I remember seeing a bit on an NHRA race I was watching where someone took a lighter and tried to ignite the fuel and it didn’t respond at all.

im not really schooled on drag racing...im more of an F-1 and open wheel road course guy......but i was wondering ....when does it switch to Nitro? i was waiting for a different idle crank but it was the same from start to shut down.....im to understand from the comments its burning Nitro the whole time? Help a novice out lol
The engine is running on its own just before the 3 second mark. At 8 seconds, it starts leaning out from a lack of the starting fuel and the rpm raises a little. Just before the 9 second mark, nitro starts flowing into the cylinders. The rpm lowers a little as it riches back up and the tone changes. The exhaust gases change also.

In the old days, they'd warm up longer. They'd start on gas, run on methanol for a minute and then switch to Nitro. Love heaing the trasnition

@@ReactionTimeMedia I hold top fuel in high regards the last year it was called Winston top fuel drag racing I got to go around with 50 people forty and girls 10 dudes...(I was 22 it was the year of my life thank you to the women)and handed out Winston cigarettes for $18 an hour while I worked on Monday through Thursday job, I turned so many people onto the top fuel, drag racing. @@overthehills_faraway8320 Cool mate. You are talking about Nitrous Oxide, which is an oxidizing agent, this is Nitro Methane. Which is an actual fuel. It actual carries some of it's own oxygen in it's chemical composition.

Aaaaah I thought top fuel was nitro....???

Top Fuel is a class in various drag racing sanctioning bodies. The fuel used in that class is nitromethane. Nitromethane is the top tier fuel allowed in organized drag racing, hence the name of the class. Next is methanol, then gasoline. Nitromethane is a fuel, not a class. So the terms are related, but not interchangeable.

james bullock sorry bud you got that wrong. Top fuel and funny cars run nitro methane for fuel. I dont know the percentage but is something in the neighbourhood of 90%nitro to 10% alcohol
@@holmes1956O Yes you are correct and its 95/5 i believe for top fuel. Methanol is about 50% oxygenated to start with, the video mentioned switching fuel like from methanol to nitro or nitrogen enriched. Some folks i think see nitro and think nitro the explosive with nitric acid. Pump fuel has 3% oxygen and many versions of racing can fuel is 33%. You can run methanol in street engines and the perfect fuel of all fuels.
If you ever feel useless in life, just think of the guy holding the dragster from the rear.
That because the engine generates enough torque to flip it over being that its suspended in the air he wouldn't have to hold it us it was sitting directly on the ground. If you ever see someone start a dragster on the stand and rev it they will almost flip off of the stand.

It’s not switching to nitro, that is how they start them, they start the motor with no spark and once it has oil and fuel pressure they turn spark on and that is your “switching to nitro”

Thanks Clarissa for your input. You're info if basically accurate, but what we are terming "switching to nitro" here is when the fuel pumps start pushing the nitro into the motor and the "starter fluid, gas or alcohol" squirted into the injector hat has burnt. Does that make sense?
Whalesong99, no combustion happens until, as Clarissa said, the magnetos are turned on. In race applications sometimes you will see them "diesel" after the finish line due to the immense heat generated from producing 11000+HP.
There is no combustion until they turn on the spark, what you see coming out of the exhaust is raw fuel, with the engine being turned over by the starter, turn on the magnetos and you get 10 000 hp+

Great question bugaddiction71. You are sort of right and sort of mistaken.... The initial fire is on alcohol or gasoline and stays running on the mixture from the skirt bottle until the pumps pick up the nitro fuel and that's when it "Switches". It then runs on "both" pump on Nitro in the burnout and pre stage, BUT! The driver actually "trims" the fuel volume with the shut-off by-bass lever in the cockpit. Then what is termed "Putting it on the high side" or "The second Pump", is actually the driver closing the shut-off all the way and delivering 100% of the nitro that the pumps are pumping to the engine.
