- How to make tired & worn out BILLBOARDS for my OO gauge model railway.
Focussing today on billboards following the layout theme of tired and run down, Ill take you through the process I went through to make these FROM SCRATCH.
In this video I:
Demonstrate how the parts could be made
in Tinkercad OR scratchbuilt from plasticard.
Demonstrate how to assemble these billboards.
Demonstrate how to create an aged and rotting timber look.
Demonstrate how to create a distressed and damaged poster look.

Marvellous John, I think both boards look amazing but to me, the one which you have placed at the far end of the platform really looks the business. I really like the "exposed to the elements for years" look that you have created there. It's very clever how you've achieved the appearance of dozens of layers of posters. Great work, many thanks for sharing this.
Thank you Ian I’m so glad you enjoyed it.
You're inspirational John. I had to pause the video midway to do a little bit of painting to distress one of my platforms. Thank you for all your tips and just showing how it is done. I can't always (to be honest, never!) match your skill but you give confidence to have a go! Cheers! Dave.
Ahhh thanks Dave. You hit the nail on the head there, its a confidence thing. Take your time, knowing if it goes wrong you can get paint off again even the posters would could off with water. Happy to help if needed.
Thanks John,
Your technique will no doubt help a lot of model makers,
Keep up the good work.
Thanks Gerald, glad you enjoyed it.
EXCELLENT PRESENTATION AND VERY INTERESTING EFFECT JOHN ....
Hi John,
Great video & love the billboards! Really gives that effect of a forgotten, run down station. Absolutely beautiful bit of scratch building...hats off to you again!
cheers for now
Derek
Thanks derek, glad you liked it.
Another brilliance this is the sort of thing that made me subscribe the finally result is outstanding
The concrete
The rusts
The notice board 💪🏻
Bless you Sam thanks
Really nice work on the billboards John, very effective. Nice & worn and the colours/texture is perfect. All the best, Andy
Absolutely brilliant John.
Two great additions to this amazing layout John, I would love to see Piccadilly Sidings at an exibition if we ever get them back.
Thanks Steve, not sure Id ever be brave enough to exhibit, Id be too concerned someone sneaking off with something.
Hi John I'm sure you would have a lot of offers to be your wingman to cover security for you.
Hmmmm its very kind, I not sure Id want the potential grief. Lol
Brilliant work. Love it.
Great video again John showing us how to. They look really good. A bit of food for thought again for my layout. Now computers I'm actually getting quite proficient on my Amstrad now 😂 cheers Andy
Lol, thank u, Well if you make a computer 3D model the amstrad should have it rendered by as quick as Xmas 2022. It’ll be amazing, lol
Such brilliant detail and a fantastic layout you've have created so far John.. keep up the great work and I look forward to the next update.
Thanks John so very kind of you.
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 you've created some great items in TickerCad.. I need to start learning this online app. I have a 3D printer just sitting here and i was going to use it to start creating and printing off 3D items for my layout..
Tinker as is so easy to use John you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner. I’d recommend watching videos on tinker card and using your printer. Getting used to your printer is more tricky but loads on TH-cam especially for ENDER series
fantastic work keep up the good work you are doing !!!
Another great video John. Love those billboards especially the battered unkempt one. Stay Safe.
Platform's nice and long for the size of layout. Weathering and worn look are the clinchers. Sometimes platforms look better with no people about. I agree , most platforms have 'no go' areas now as most are reduced in length.
This really is a captivating project. All the best.
Everybody's said it already but nevertheless I wanted to add my own appreciation of your work. You approach all of your modelling with the observant eye of the artist and it absolutely pays off. Who else would have thought of going to such lengths to create an image of peeling posters? Terrific!
Ahhh thanks Trevor so very kind. Im so glad you are enjoying the channel. I only decided on the distressed look to fit in with the run down station feel.
Nicely done, John.
Very well seen. Regards Stephen.
Thanks although not sure what you mean, maybe a typo..
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 John, When my art master thought that you had caught the look of something he said..."Very well seen." In other words, observed and rendered well. Regards Stephen.
the billboards are fab John... great technic
Thanks Neil was a lot of fun to do
Very cool, John. Nice walkthrough and effect. Cheers
I really enjoyed this one John, a great video, cheers Paul at Sandling Junction.
Hi John,
Fantastic project as always you are becoming the UK's Luke Towan all you need is a few millon more subscribers but with content like this why not. I bet you wish you had got into the 3D printing earlier as Piccadilly station would have I would think been easier to do not with standing the phenomenal work you did on that. I hope you are getting more work now but the downside if you are will mean less time to do these wonderful creations for us to see. A video on the 3D printer and your experience as a novice would be interesting was it hard to set up the cost of materials etc etc. As always keep safe and well.
Cheers Robert.
Thanks Robert, Luke Towan ?. Oh blimey think there is a big difference between us not to mention the millions of subs as you said lol. Yes I would have loved the 3d printer along time ago, it would have certainly made better job of all those girders. Ill see if others want printer video, dont want to waste my time
Hi John,
Nothing to do with this video I have taken your advice and trimmed the lens on the 66 and did it with some nail trimmers looks a lot better now so cheers.
Robert.
What a cool project, they add a lot to the scene....thanks for sharing Jack 👍👍👍👍
Just like to reiterate all the comments. Fantastic John. Regards Fred
Thanks Fred
Brilliant John..
Bless you Allan, thank you
How do you do, John,
Your channel was referred to me by TH-cam's algorithms. And I do enjoy it, have subscribed, and rang the notification bell. As I am aware of it's importance.
As a 70 year old railway fan & almost 60 year modeler there are a few points I would like to make of this episode. First, the Station sign "Piccadilly Siding" should remain pristine.
In fact I would enhance the scene by including a pair of RxR workers. Who are giving the sign a fresh coat of paint. The reason is your new Station would normally try to keep it's best face forward. Also the contrast to the distressed billboard show the "lengths" the Railway Management would go to look the other way.
Next the somewhat recent, yet distressed, billboard. Before glueing the advert card to the structure you could have taken some wax crayons (here in the U.S. we call them Crayola) and added some color to the images to indicate a printed poster. Then to distress it, melt the wax into the card stock. Take your hot air gun (or your wife's hair dryer). Lay the card flat on parchment paper (again from your wife's kitchen supplies). And holding the gun well above the colored card, with the gun facing downward, heat the wax until it is melting. Avoid overheating heating the wax. Some crayons are made of beeswax and can ignite.
For a highly distressed look again color the advert card with the crayons to your liking.
However, when heating the wax stand the card upright with some rear supports. This again will cause the wax to melt into the card. However, it will allow a lesser degree of coloring to be absorbed and cause the hot wax to drip and run down the cards face to appear as strikes and wear.
After the wax and card fully cools off then attach it to your billboard using the technique you used here.

~Jim
Hi Jim, thank you for kind words and support, much appreciated.
I distressed the one station sign as that end of the platform is kind of forgotten. It will be emphasised more so when the waiting shelter goes in. You are exactly right otherwise ‘best face forward’. Management rely on volunteers who seemingly dont want to repair the billboards hence they’ve been run down, along with the platform trolley.
There are indeed many, many ways to achieve all sorts of effects and we each choose the best for us at the time, all are good and I may use the wax method you described in the future. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Please do feel free to check out my N gauge channel too.
th-cam.com/channels/ygRpQ8YII92Mny-lQpG5oA.html ...and indeed other videos from this channel.
Lovely work John! I think you may have a tendency to over-weather.. I recognise this because I have the same tendency :-) Cheers Joachim
Weathering is a very personal thing and it depends on what’s being weathered. I wanted these signs to be quite dilapidated to fit in with the overall run down feeling.
Very effective look, complimenting the dilapidated look of the whole layout. Did you imagine this as being a station near to closure? It really isn't anywhere that would attract many passengers!
Hi Alan, thank you for your kind words. Station near to closure? Not really. The idea started as an inglenook and shunting layout, but the station was added to give a variety of interest. I now call it a heritage line, but one struggling for money, hence the run down look.
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 Ah ok I get it now! Brilliant look to it and although I'm attempting a similar shunting layout I doubt I will rise to your level. But that's why we all watch your channel - something to aim for.
You did a fantastic job John i like it and it is really cool that it is 3D printed i am sure we will be seeing a lot more 3D printed things on your layout in the future.
Thank you and yes definitely. The printer will pay for itself in time. I got it as a money saving thing as I can make and print most things eg relay boxes. They cost a fortune and you only get 4 I believe but I can make any and every style I want and as many as I want Ive even used it to repair my shower curtain. I highly recommend them.
Lovely job John, all good ideas for me to store ready for when I get to the scenics, cheers John, John
Lol, glad to be of help John
And what if you don’t have a 3d printer ?
Please watch the first part of the video (end of the tinkercad part), I did explain what you could do. Take a look!!!
