Great one Steve. I’m a pool builder in the Northeast and I’m probably the only one in the area that pushes vinyl gunite any install that doesn’t have a spillover wall. Most contractors want that margin from the larger price tag, but it can definitely be an inferior product depending on conditions.

My area in Ontario Canada has high water every spring, The spring snow thaw and rain. my pool will have a little spongey area in the deep end but as summer comes and things get dryer say early July the soft spongey goes away and no wrinkles in my 8 year old liner. I have seen it in friends pools with the same results. its not a leak its just spring run off.

What pool would you recommend in North Carolina. I’m trying to decide between fiberglass and vinyl. What are your thoughts ?

Great video Steve thank you for sharing. I have a question. I live in an area where the heat gets terrible, right now we are hitting as much as 109. I did have a liner melt because of the heat and reflection. Not any fun. However my question is because I do have a vinal pool can I use a shock treatment on a weekly basis and be okay with that or should I continue to use chlorine? Using chlorine in this heat I go through about 3 pucks weekly because of the heat. Evaporation is also another one of my issues around here. The sun has completely faded my pool pattern away; however, it still holds water so I'm in no hurry to replace it. Thank you for your response.

Hey Steve, thank you for all the information you put out. Do you think it is possible for a concrete pool to float with a hydrostatic valve installed?

Yes, definitely. The valve is a spring and is in an unservicable location so the spring can corrode and fail to open. It can also be that the hydrostatic force is too great to be relieved by one 1.5" port size, though this would likely assume the water level in the pool has been lowered. If ypu keep your pool full this really minimizes any potential issues from hydrostatic forces.

how high of a water table is too high to not have a sump well or pit for a vinyl liner pool?

I consider a drainage provision like a sump well to be required for any build. The pool could last 20, 30, 50+ years and over time water tables can change especially if there is land development in your area. Better to install the provision for controlling the water now whether it is immediately needed or not
