The family that have average incomes do "sell" their daughter to wealthy families for a huge amount of bride price coz in the past[not all families but some do] female children are taught in early age to be obedient and follow their husbands coz males in chinese families has the upperhand all the time and more favored.. So even if they take many other concubines, as a wife specially to a wealthy family, you have no say... Modern times today, i think fewer families do these stuff anymore, maybe there are still some..

The FL in this is a total doormat. Honestly I hate watching the scenes where ppl willingly stand around and watch someone being stripped and donor say anything to stop ppl. Also these ppl are very fickle and clearly haven't got 10 braincells between them.
The people around them have very very brain cells and even less morals.
