  • Nature's Chocolate Bunny. I captured new behind the scenes footage of the life of a marsh rabbit in the wild. The Marsh Rabbit is a smaller and much darker version of the more familiar eastern cottontail rabbit, which is best known for its conspicuous cotton puff tail and long ears. In contrast, the marsh rabbit has a very small gray-brown tail and short ears. Marsh rabbits are almost dark chocolate colored and somewhat similar in appearance to guinea pigs.

Thank you for giving us a glimpse into this sweet little rabbit's life. We have cotton tail rabbits in our back yard. They also like to stay near the fence but they love to eat the clover that grows in the grass.

Really enjoyed this. Almost as much as the rabbits, I enjoyed hearing all the frog songs in the background. Wonderful!

This is wonderful 🥰 I hadn't known of the marsh rabbits, but I think I have seen them when out at the prairie and mistook them for the cottontail- I love the standing in the water bowl lol amazing how everything affects everything else in nature 🙏 thanks so much and Happy Holy week and resurrection day🙏🙏🙏

This is a random thought that struck me as I’m watching, but I ponder if the rabbits didn’t drink from the dish because it was standing water. My cats won’t drink from standing water dishes that are left out long enough to lose their coolness. I’ve heard from a few sources that it’s because stale water is easier for bacteria to collect in, so it either tastes bad or - if not - gets them sick. If anyone has seen their mother or sibling get sick, or experienced it for themselves, I imagine they would quickly learn not to do so. And if you see your parent/s actively avoiding a specific category of stimuli (warm water that is not moving), that’s a valuable lesson, just like the tastiness of fresh watercress or clover over typical grass.

These are big rabbits! I had no idea they were this big. Enjoyed the video. I didn't know Florida had Armadillos?? I'm in Texas and they are everywhere here.
I have two cotton tail bunnies living on my property. I have seen them many times at night feeding underneath my bird feeders, taking advantage of the seeds that have fallen from the feeders. They are so cute but can really run fast if they see me watching them.
    Great video!! Thank you!!

We saw tons of these little guys running around the resort we stayed at in Sarasota. It was so bazaar lol. Literally would see anywhere from 5-10 of them in a 500 foot stretch getting to the beach

these little guys are so fascinating and delightful! Thank you for putting this together. I wonder if they're going out of their way to hop in the water dish because the water helps disguise the scent of their tracks?

Not sure if you are checking comments...
I was wondering if a Marsh Rabbit could live in a neighborhood, like a Cottontail?? And would he be happy?
I've rescued a baby Marsh Rabbit... she is adorable❤
I've only rescued Cottontails before. I release them in my yard. They visit me... some on a regular basis. I am the "Bunny Mom" of the neighborhood.
I'm in NW Bradenton FL and after my research I'm thinking that I should take her to Robinson preserve, which is only like 5 minutes away. I have another preserve only a couple minutes away but not as big. I have seen 1 marsh rabbit there before. These places have wetlands/marshes.
I can't take her where she was found... behind a Walmart and surrounded by businesses and roads. She was in shock and had an eye infection.
I'm guessing she is around 4½ weeks old right now, but I'm judging by size of my Cottontails.
She is living in my greenhouse, happy and healthy. This is where I keep them to transition before releasing. I have a "bunny door" in a couple places that I will open when they are ready. But this time I will have to take her somewhere else 😔 because I want her to be happy and find other Marsh bunnies.
Am I correct on this? Or is it possible for them to be just as happy in a neighborhood? Could cottontails and Marsh bunnies mate??🤔 Hybrids???
    Thank you for your channel!

I don't think they will mate together, but Marsh rabbits can survive in suburban neighborhoods if they have a safe place with like palmetto thickets near canals or lakes etc, They could survive where cotton tails lives, But without some decent cover nearby I doubt if they would thrive and multiply. A preserve would be better. Good Luck! BB

Thank you for this beautiful contribution to the knowledge of rabbits and hares - they need every bit of exposure they can get, especially the least known species like the enchanting marsh rabbits here, because leporids in general are declining even if many species are still not considered officially endangered and this decline is largely the result of human activity, like the huge feral cat in this documentary: sad but true, domestic cats allowed outside are killing small native mammals and birds by the millions or even billions, yet people get ofended when told to keep kitty indoors (!)
