When we went our tour gave us the buggy that you were expecting and we payed an extra $40 to do a private tour with just us and the instructor and we skipped past all of the caravans and it was great, i would definatly reccomend asking for a private tour, i dont think they normally advertise it but our tour made it happen for us
The company was called 'Adventure Boogies" I would recommend paying a little more and going with a tour operator that is affiliated to your Hotel or book directly with an excursion provider (you can find on trip adviser). If you book online through viatour, get your guide, or a street seller etc you can never guarantee what company you'll end up at.

Rex buggy is different they actually interacted and went over safety rules etc , but man I agree I felt like mad max haha but driving I had fun
Was the excursion called "Punta Cana Buggy Tour"? I know there are numerous buggy tours so I don't want to make the same mistake as you did.
