    What a pleasure to watch the classic British craftsmanship. The writing, acting, cinematography--all so assured. Those guys knew their onions.

    We went our separate ways as good friends. Truly, you've never slipped my mind. While learning English, I delved into your short stories and eventually your novels. Your tales captivated me, sparking a deep desire to explore the world. This is what I did.

    Bravo! i have re-visited this story and film after 20 years and this screen play gets better and better. Anyone of us born in the postwar period of 1950's and 60's knows these characters. Of all the leading actors in Quintet films Basil Radford beats all other comers including Dirk Bogarde and this remains my favourite except for The facts of life as originally written in the book. The truth is these are great stories and Maugham is one of the greatest story tellers.

    I don't understand why they changed the original ending. It's stronger to end it (like in the story) with the Coronal cuckolded, but still obtuse;
    "I'll take your advice. I'll do nothing. Let them think me a damned fool and to hell with them. The truth is, I don't know what I'd do without Evie. But I'll tell you what, there's one thing I shall never understand till my dying day: What in the name of heaven did the fellow ever see in her?".
    For me, that's what made the story so memorable.

    Thankyou very much Mr. Banner Gundown, for making available these dramatisations of stories which are among the finest of Maugham's work. I shall keep watching for others of your provenance.

      +Joe Lyons I saw these on the ABC when I was about 13 in 1990, I tried to track them down ever since. There was no trace of his films on youtube so I uploaded so they would live on..Cheers.

    Basil Radford (1897 - 1952) who plays Colonel Garnet in this 1948 production was a celebrated English actor in the 1930s and 1940s and practically made a career out of playing dim upper class twits and former Army officers. He was most famous for playing with his fellow actor and friend Nauton Wayne two cricket-mad but unexpectedly courageous Englishmen (Charters and Caldicott) in Europe on the eve of war in Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes (1938). They reprised these roles in Night Train to Munich (1940). The duo went on to appear in several other 1940s films, in BBC radio plays and eventually their own TV series.

      I don't get it , Cecil Parker plays Colonel Peregrine in this film, but I do agree about the Charters and Caldicott making enjoyable set pieces in old British films.
