It was only in steam for a couple of weeks in April 1986, by the end of that year the line had closed again due to vegetation regrowth. They managed to transfer a bit of the collection to Dorrigo before that happened but a large number of exhibits were marooned at various sidings and stations for 30 years or so. Coffs Harbour Council ordered a clean up and 18 carriages were scrapped

I was one of the lucky ones to travel the length of this line on this very train. Every level spot was on a bridge its all 1 in 30 grades up and down. Happy memories.

There is a two part doco on TH-cam describing the debacle that existed around the Dorrigo Rail Museum made in the 80's. Whenever I drive past the sidings everything seems to be still sitting there rotting away. I believe by now most of the enthusiasts and the protagonist would be deceased or close to it. Reading the threads with this video it would appear it's still a poo fight. Full of egos, dreamers and autocrats.

I dont believe this line will ever reopen but i hope im wrong.
Its good to see that the so called Dorrigo steam museum at least has the stock saved but i think there is to much of it and no money to restore it., i think ylu could easily sink $100million in that place and it would still be nlt enough, also who iis going to do the work.
As far as the line is concerend kt was probably madness to have built the line , it has suffered from washouts, rock falls, etc, and it would be a money pit to get going.

As I understand it, a couple of small, 0-6-0 industrial saddle tanks exist on site at Dorrigo. British built. Anybody know their current condition?

What a soundtrack! It's like the opening of High Plains Drifter with Clint Eastwood, Where Eagles Dare also with Richard Burton, the dancing scene with Cosmo Kramer and Elaine's flatmate and the smashed glass coffee table in Seinfeld, The Gauntlett (Clint Eastwood), one of the tracts from the Christopher Plummer film The Sound of Music and the Didgeridoo from the 1974 Sandy Harbutt film, Stone.

Trouble is that all the money he's raised has done nothing else except collect more and more railcars. It's been almost 30 years and virtually nothing's been done about the rest of the line. Jones is only good for spending other people's money

You come from the USA and so are highly qualified in irrelevancy, the reason being that you are so self-indulgent that will just blither away to entertain yourself and boar the hell out of anyone else. Next time, consider whether this level of self indulgence will destroy a reasonable level of comment. It will serve you well and save others from wasting their time.

@ James.... You are quite correct with your prediction, the 35km Dorrigo to Ulong section owned by the Dorrigo Steam Railway and Museum has received no preventative maintenance for 35 years and is completely overgrown again. The dozen or so abandoned timber bridges will eventually succumb to bushfires in the coming years and that will be it as far as any railway operations are concerned

I visited the site several times and I can say that the museum's plans are sound. It is just unfortunate that they move ever so slowly due to a lack of volunteer labour and funding. Once they get that exhibition hall roof up, serious restoration work can commence. At the moment they are doing what any serious museum should be doing - I am a History and Museum Science student at Macquarie University, so I do have a good idea of what should be going on. We'll see trains on that line again.

I cant find it, probably copyright struck! FFS if you REMOVE this because you o9wn it at least put it up to SHARE and get the revenue yourself! Makes my blood boil... I had it on video many years ago, pretty sure this footage maybe included in it as well but with loco sounds vs music.EDIT: I found it after much searching, no offence to poster of this video but heres the link if anyone's interested, it is well worth a watch! th-cam.com/video/BOly1bSd1lw/w-d-xo.html
