THG hates the Habs, always had, he's a Bruins fan at heart. St-Louis turned the Habs around after Ducharme, who wasn't a bad coach, dropped the ball in the early 2021-2022 season. He's perfect for a rebuilding team and has the respect of all his players and the fans. I also think St-Louis will coach us into deep playoff runs once we have our core well surrounded. I kept hearing the name Leetch does this, Leetch does that, he was everywhere. This and the (I finally found it on youtube and downloaded it, i should have bookmarked it or placed it in a playlist), Joe Sakic was breaking a 3-3 tie in either game 4 or 5 when the Rangers climbed up a 2-0 deficit and KERRY FRASER, the ref who hated the Nords so bad it was brutally obvious in most of his calls in the 80's and 90's. My parents have the Alain Coté goal refused because they didn't have decimals after the second, otherwise it was good with today's game clocks, my millenial nords fan had the Joe Sakic disallowed goal, that was putting the Nords 4-3 with the last half or less of the third period left to play. Fraser signaled a linesman had whistled an offside and then Fraser himself had whistled (must be one of the rare jobs refs could do then, call an offside a linesman had missed, older folks could tell me, I'd appreciate it) to this day after many visual and audio analysis shows no offside was called and Sakic just got past a dman and let his deadly wrister rip in a corner which Richter never ever saw. The rangers defense didn't stop playing either, so this was just another anti-Nords BS call by Fraser out of dozens, but that was their last season in Quebec and winning that game would have placed them back 3-2 over them, likely changing history and preventing the Rangers from winning the cup. ☹
I think RBA is listed in the right spot. What he and Don were able to do with this team was incredible. However we need a SCF appearance for him to be higher. If he can still have post season success after the GM change, that could raise his spot in my eyes as well. Still, in Rod we trust!
As a B's fan, I'm proud of Monty for getting himself back on track and giving us two incredible regular seasons. But I have my issues with him. The constant line shuffling can be frustrating, and the Too Many Men debacle in the playoffs this year.. like, what are we doing here.
B's fan too. Hard agree on both the Too Many Men and the line shuffling. Other than that though, his coaching is magic. B's got to RD2 of the playoffs without a top c. I hope as time goes on, he shuffles lines less and just puts faith in the lines that have been shown to work. And holy shit, never put march and pasta on the same line ever again. Since Monty has taken over both David and Brad have 80+ GVA. Cassidy may have clashed with the guys but they sure didn't give up the puck like they do now.
All in all not a bad list. I would make some changes between places 5 to 10 (Bednar, Brind'Amour, Torts, DeBoer, Tocchet, Knoblauch), but that's because I value longterm success a little more than one good season. (But I mean Tocchet and Knoblauch can easily prove me wrong by following up their success.) But overall solid. 👍🏻
Torts definitely gets a lot of credit from me for squeezing blood from a stone. Philly wasn't supposed to be anywhere near the playoffs and they nearly did it. And Columbus hasn't been anywhere near the same since he left.
Bednar should definitely be higher. I would easily have him over torts, tochect and Montgomery. He’s had more or as much playoff success, has won a cup more recently, and everyone says the Avs are a one line team, yet he consistently has them near the top of the central for the last 4 years
@@claytonwyatt9780 I disagree, he took the 16-17 avs (48pts) and made them a playoff team in one year. Everyone says the Avs are a one line team yet his system and coaching still has them as a top tier playoff team.
Interesting list - it really makes a difference on what you emphasize in your evaluation. Stanley Cup wins are especially interesting factors. Sometimes teams win a Cup despite a coach or really don't need a coach to do more than open the bench door. However once you win a Cup, you are forever seen as a "winner".
The reason coaches are getting fired much quicker these days is the hard cap, dilution of talent from expansion, and bad contracts leave GMs with few options after a poor result and is largely a face saving measure in many instances.
The Capitals trust him enough that they took on Dubois. Aside from Dubois himself, Carbery will have the biggest impact on whether or not Dubois can realize his potential. With such a big contract hanging over him, that's a big responsibility to put on Carbery, and the Capitals think that he can do it. If they make Dubois the 1C alongside Ovechkin, then Ovechkin will also have a huge effect on Dubois' development over the next two or three years. This will be a great test of Carbery's ability as a coach, but if Dubois can set a career high in points, Carbery is going to deserve a lot of credit.
As a Leafs fan, I feel like I am banging my head against a wall every time a list like this is done and other guys from the Atlantic are always at the top
Mike Sullivan should be on this list. He would probably win another cup if he left the penguins. I don't even care where else he goes, he should just leave the pens.
By the advanced stats the Pens were the best 5v5 team in the league last season and I don't think people give enough credit to Sullivan for what he manages to get out of the team. They had some real bad finishing last season which is a mark of a declining roster, but I think ultimately his stock was sunk unreasonably much by the team simply being unable to execute on the powerplay. I think they got in their heads and no changes really took effect until they got out of it. It's partly on the coach for sure, but it overshadowed what otherwise was a clinic in two-way play by the Pens.
It’ll be interesting to see what Utah can do now that the former Coyotes have stability with a 100% supportive ownership. I think their coaching and management will really proper in the new environment. I’m in Phoenix I wish the UHC nothing but success.
Cannot really agree with you on this one. Feels like the list is too influenced by recent short term experiences. Knoblauch has been there one season and is already high up, whereas Laviolette did not make the list.
Without Knoblauch the Oilers don't get anywhere near the Stanley Cup. Either he got outrageously lucky or he has a genuine gift for picking the exact right way to move players around the lineup. That alone saved their playoff run more than once. I'm so happy they have him and I can't wait to see what he can do with a full season!
The fact that Torts took a team that had meh to no goaltending, meh defense, and tiny offense, and got them within reach of a playoff spot, that's what we call great coaching.
This reminds me, is there any way you could make a video going over what exactly makes a good coach? Other than wins I don't really understand how people judge that, especially on really good rosters.
I too am surprised Laviolette is not on that list. I would have had him on before Knoblauch or Carbery. I’m not a big fan, but his record speaks for itself and he has a Cup ring which neither of those guys has. Over 800 career wins more than anyone on the list except for Maurice, Ruff and Cooper. He was in a conference final just this past season. So how do Carbery and Knoblauh make the list and pistol Pete doesn’t?
I would put Bruce Boudreau head and shoulders above Tortorella. Torts Cup in '04 was stained, and Calgary should have win in 6. Boudreau has a lifetime .626 winning pct. Vs. Tortorellas .542. Plus Bruce has won 275 more games than he's lost. Torts 130.
Glad Jared Bednar made the list. He doesn’t get nearly enough respect, and it’s criminal he hasn’t been awarded a Jack Adams by now. I can’t understand how he always gets overlooked.
Cooper then Bednar in my opinion. Bednar took a rebuild to a title then lost a lot of players to injury. Somehow we fight and win the division sadly losing in rd 1. However, last season we were in the hunt until Dallas whom we had incredible regular season games with won in round 2. Vancouver wins one good season and gets top 5 🙄
@@HockeyGUY66871 I'm also a pens fan and curious why you say that? multiple Stanley Cup winner, sure the last two years haven't gone great but missed the playoffs by a game the last two with honestly very mediocre lineups
Ya I totally see your argument but playoffs is partial luck. Goaltending hasn't been good since flower left and in one of those runs we we're down to our third string goalie
Everyone on the Avs always gets dropped. Bednar can't be tops, he coaches MacInnon Makar, and Rantanen. So on and so forth. Not a hockey guy exclusive observation. It's happened in the past with MacInnonas far as the Hart.etc
Always thought Ted Nolan got a bum rub.. he win's the JA and gone the next year.. seemingly black balled.. took some pretty garb teams to above their punching weight. Glad to see Paul Maurice got his cup too :)
Shannon, what is Tortorella doing in front of Bednar ? Are you kidding me ? How could you put Tocchet with 9 1/2 WEEKS OF COACHING higher than Bednar ? I am not Avs fan.
I feel like Bednar is a bit low, the contraversy that Avs have gone through these last few years in the playoffs have been brutal and they still put up a good fight against Dallas this year who were one of the strongest teams in the league.
Not angry about it, but I'm kinda wondering what your timeframe and other criteria were for this list. Paul Maurice?... 🤔 ...Yeah, he won a Cup this year with a crackerjack team that threatened last year. But if I'm not mistaken, he is still the losingest coach in NHL history - and not all of his teams were bad. And I think Brunette's work in Nashville should get him somewhere on this list. I would keep Brind'Amour on this list, but even though I love the guy, I would move him down because the Canes have failed to have discipline in the blueliner and goalie ranks, and that keeps them from going deeper toward the Cup...The list by and large though, is solid...Have a happy vacay, Shannon...
Maurice NEARLY joined an exclusive list, of 4 other coaches, who have lost 3 Finals, without winning once, and he nearly choked it away. Not a top 12 coach.
Carbery has been a coach for one year. Same with knoblauch. One year's success doesn't make for a great coach. Cooper has never won the Jack Adams, but he probably is #1. BrindAmor's teams alway washes out in the playoffs. Kinda like Keefe. Laviolette belongs on this list. So does Sullivan. They have history.

The video is best current coaches, not coaches who are still active with the best careers
I did understand, but I could not agree this time with this list.
(And the estimation of the best current coaches of course include their careers also, like THG has put Jon Cooper as the 1st).
I agree. It’s an awful list haha
Truth, one year does not make you a great coach. Craig Berube as an example!
Atlantic division,1-2-3 in the rankings. Crazy
Handling of Montgomery situation was all class. Decorum still exists thanks THG.
Nice Nordiques jersey
Being a Leafs/Canucks fan I totally agree with Cooper being number one.
No Sully or Laviolette is kinda bonkers
I agree on both counts
Sullivan refused to fire reirden who was destroying their powerplay. He is too loyal to his assistant coaches
Does a Stanley Cup from 15 years ago count? Back to back Calder Finals appearances?
Would it be legal for Patrick Roy to serve both as head coach and emergency backup goaltender (for his team, obviously not the other team)?
Enjoyed this episode. Any plans of an ALL COACHES list??
No, he’s just been doing top 12s for each position and now coaches
I too am surprised Laviolette is not on that list. I would have had him on before Knoblauch or Carbery.
I’m not a big fan, but his record speaks for itself and he has a Cup ring which neither of those guys has. Over 800 career wins more than anyone on the list except for Maurice, Ruff and Cooper. He was in a conference final just this past season. So how do Carbery and Knoblauh make the list and pistol Pete doesn’t?
Laviolette has to be on here.
Is that a Royn-Nouranda Huskies jersey, Shannon???
I have that jersey w Sakic on it
I would put Bruce Boudreau head and shoulders above Tortorella. Torts Cup in '04 was stained, and Calgary should have win in 6.
Boudreau has a lifetime .626 winning pct.
Vs. Tortorellas .542.
Plus Bruce has won 275 more games than he's lost. Torts 130.
as much was i think rba should be higher than where he is, he is infact on the list so i cant really be too upset when some people would exclude him
Glad Jared Bednar made the list.
Spot on Shannon
Cassidy should be way over Monty. 5 100 point seasons. Almost 6. Always coaches a great team that excels in all 3 areas of the ice.
I absolutely see Tocchet being fired this coming season.
Not having Sullivan is wild
Im a Pens fan and Sullivan doesn’t deserve to be on this list.
He used to be excellent. Time passes
@@HockeyGUY66871 I'm also a pens fan and curious why you say that? multiple Stanley Cup winner, sure the last two years haven't gone great but missed the playoffs by a game the last two with honestly very mediocre lineups
@@jackoakes1998 the 2 Cups are 1000% totally irrelevant now. That was such a long time ago. No playoff series wins since 2018.
Ya I totally see your argument but playoffs is partial luck. Goaltending hasn't been good since flower left and in one of those runs we we're down to our third string goalie
if this list goes by based on, this past season, i dont agree with no 1 and no 10 and no 6 the rest im good with
such a sweet nordiques jersey
> Paul Maurice
Imagine Pens not choking in those Columbus and Chicago games. How greatly would his story change.
How would that change things?
@@FINsoininen Panthers don't make 2023 Playoffs, Maurice might have gotten fired after that.
'DeBore' won't take Dallas to the promised land any more than in SJ.
Love it or hate it.....100% accurate
Everyone on the Avs always gets dropped. Bednar can't be tops, he coaches MacInnon Makar, and Rantanen. So on and so forth. Not a hockey guy exclusive observation. It's happened in the past with MacInnonas far as the Hart.etc
Always thought Ted Nolan got a bum rub.. he win's the JA and gone the next year.. seemingly black balled.. took some pretty garb teams to above their punching weight. Glad to see Paul Maurice got his cup too :)
Nolan is mystifying considering all of the total sh**it stain humans who got multiple chances and more in the league .
So you rank the Oilers coach very high for one season, and then rank Cooper at the top for several seasons? I don’t get your logic.
A few choices there that should not be above Lavi.
How does Craig Berube not crack the top 12, but Knoblauch and Tourigny do?
He got fired last year lol
Leafs fans: What about Sheldon keefe 🤓🤪...😅
No complaints from me
I swear, if it it Boston, Vancouver, Dallas, I won't be surprised...and there it is BOOM!
Cooper... he is good. Especially at complaining about 6 guys on the ice when he had 7 :P
Where do you rank Dean Evason!?
Jack Adams just like GM of the year is a joke award
Monty over Bruce…idk about that one lol
I find it strange that you make us watch you write on a whiteboard in 2024
If Ruff gets the Sabre's to the playoffs, does he make your squad?
Where is the man who screwed Mike Madano out of his 1500 games? The man who everyone loves!
