- What is the difference between speed post and registered post in the Indian postal services?
Registered post is a mail service offered by the postal department, while Speed post is a premium product.
Registered post being a service is provided to any existing pincode while Speed post is not provided for some pincodes.
Registered post is delivered to the addressee, but Speed post is delivered to the address.
Registered post is cheap but slower in transmission while Speed post is expensive but faster in transmission for a usual letter item under 100 g** weight. Further, Speed post is taxable.
Registered post considers only the weight and dimensions of the article to determine its tariff. Speed post, in addition to dimensions, examines the length of the distance that the mail would be tranmitted.
In case of loss/theft, registered articles are given more serious consideration by the courts since it is a confidential and secured service provided by the Department of Posts, India.
** For heavier article than 100 g, a registered post may be more expensive than speed post. Hence, as seen in some answers, it has been categorically stated that a registered post is expensive than speed post under the consideration (although not explicitly stated in any of the answers) that the booked item has been registered as a “letter”. However in such a scenario, a customer may opt for the chaper rates under registered “parcel” over registered (letter) post. And a registered parcel is way cheaper than speed post till the former's permissible weight limit of 20 kg. Over 20 kg, Speed post is the only available mode of transmission).
