    Hey, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate everything you tell us. I'm 16 and I want to make art my life once I grow up and sometimes I don't pick up my sketchbook, because I think I'm too bad and that I'm wasting my time. But your words make me think totally different now. A sketchbook is not made to create perfect masterpieces but to just simply create art. Art that makes you happy, or that makes you think and much more. Thank you so much! I wish you the best life ever.

      Hey kim, I just turned 70! I started drawing very young, but stopped because of of this same feeling . . . I am just now learning how to "adjust" old drawings, finish them, use posca pens and gouache to wipe out awkward body parts, etc. It has given me so much freedom and enjoyment, and every line I draw or brush mark I make, I am building muscle memory and gaining understanding of what I draw.

    We forget drawing is actually just a medium we all express ourselves in! Especially now that everyone is trying to make a living out of it i think its been commercialized to the point that we forget to enjoy it in the first place. With this video, you have surely managed to rekindle something i have been missing for a while. The sheer freedom of just drawing things that mean a lot to you. My heartfelt thank you to you sir. While I may agree with you, the art nerd in me has to add that art is way less commercialised than it has been in the past. Up until Michelangelo’s time and even further, art wasn’t exactly seen as a tool to express oneself but rather a trade that was sold like any other. Only in recent times (the last few hundred years) there has been a big general push to make art more expressive, as art became more accessible to both the consumers and the artists themselves, as well as that realism “wasn’t needed anymore” after the camera was invented.

    • @itsisha9762
      @itsisha9762 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vornamenachname3441 I do agree to you! I think what I meant was that while art will always be a medium of expression, it’s the hustle culture in today’s world that can make us forget to enjoy what we were doing in the first place if you know what I mean, it can be detrimental to the act of creativity itself. It’s like a rat race, but it doesn’t only apply to the arts, it applies to almost everything.
      +expressionism did come out of the need to do something more however, but even realist painters were expressing themselves through their brushwork, unless they were just making a copy without thinking, I think even realism has expression. However yes! art is generally given more acceptance and is seen as a medium of creativity now more than ever so that’s a great thing for sure. I think what we all need is to slow down really.

    I think the best thing about this video is that you aren't really challenging us or telling us what to do or in what way to do something. You're inspiring us and letting us know it's okay if we mess up. It's a concept I'm struggling with, that same voice in the head saying nah not today, what if I don't do well, what if I hate it, I'm not that great at this maybe I should procrastinate and watch more art videos (coincidently) lol... we all have this silly fear that every drawing or painting should be excellent when really just like our days (as you said) not all are great, most are just okay, and some will surprise us! I like that sentiment that drawings and paintings, whatever art you do... is about retelling your life, or your innerself and the things you find beauty or interest in. It doesn't matter how it turns out. Just do art , do it for yourself and no one else. Being a human enables us this gift, why not use it... it is never a waste to create, but it is a waste to sit there thinking you shouldn't or can't create. If you like it. Do it. Thanks for sharing this insight. It's a mantra I'm only just starting to practice and accept in myself.

It’s really hard to justify doing something just because you enjoy it sometimes. I have been creative all my life. I’ve painted portraits, ceramics and everything else that stood still. I craft a lot doing crochet, making wreaths, painting glass and doing calligraphy. You get the idea. Even though sketching and painting is my first love and the first thing I think about every morning when I wake up, I always managed to lose my way even with every conceivable art supply imaginable in my arsenal. After I read Shut Your Monkey and listening to Danny I discovered a new way of thinking and a better attitude about what I create and I’ve managed to get back to what I love starting with my sketchbooks. I sketch everyday and paint in watercolor too all because of Danny. Now as someone in their mid-seventies, I am finally on my way to becoming the artist I always wanted to be. I can attest to the fact that…its NEVER to late to be what you might have been. Create with no reservations.

    Hi.
    And I was 17 I moved to Pittsburgh to go to art School and I was a fairly talented yet not dedicated enough artist I was really gifted a sculpture of photography but I had drawn since I was a child and everybody said my drawings were good.
    A lot of things happen when I lived there and my school closed and I didn't go to another and I stopped drawing. Many years later I did several paintings and, I think they are pretty amazing. I still have them but I don't draw. I found you probably 3 days ago here on TH-cam, and I bought a SketchBook at the hobby store and it's 2:00 in the morning and I'm sitting here watching your video and I got it out of the package and I'm going to draw something.
    I really like what you said about your first drawings weren't very good and then you got better and better and you realize you could draw anything and also about how they can take you to any point in your life at any time you open one and how they really are documenting your life. I like your style Danny Gregory with these videos and I like when you flip through your sketchbooks, I like the kinds of things that you put in them. so I'm here in my living room and I'm going to draw what's right in front of me on the first page of my little new sketchbook.
    I hope you see this because it's my way of saying thank you.
    I know my drawings won't be very good at first and I really don't care. I just feel like I should use what you're saying and just draw.
    🙂🙏🤍
