Aurora Colorado - Suggest when using bamboo supports and garden tape to loop the tape around each support which adds more support to each side. Often when just using one long piece of tape around the whole plant the tape will slide down the bamboo and offer little support. Best practice is to put the peony “cages” in place before needed. Happy gardening from Colorado.
This video is great. I am watching from Prince Edward Island, Canada. I love peonies and I have a few varieties in my garden which were planted by my grandmother over 50 years ago and they are still going strong.
I just planted my first peonies last year and they are up and have blooms starting! So excited! To think a month ago we still had snow and now the garden is bursting with new growth! Manitoba, Canada zone 3/4
Oh nice . Fingers crossed your peony flower blooms this year . Sometimes they take a few years to get reestablished before they bloom again . Make sure there is no more than 2 inches of soil above the highest eye . If your peony is planted too deep it may not flower. Some gardeners in warm climates follow the rule of only have one inch of dirt on top 🌸🌸
I can’t grow or raise peonies but I like to watch anything related to peonies after I bought some cut blooms from Trader Joe … OMG they are gorgeous. BTW your chauffeur is cute.
I have an ornamental grass that has quite a stalk on it with a ribbon banner arching up and falling over. In the autumn I save the sturdier stalks for plant stakes the next year or however long they last.
Thanks for the tips! I have been using the small tomato cages and they work great. You don't see them when the plant bushes out but they work well and are cheap. They are much cheaper than the peony cages.

I think the grids offer the most support, have used for years. Peonies still flop a bit within the plain hoops. Have never seen the double hoops, those would probably work better than the singles. If using the grids, put over the peonies when about 8-10" high and gently guide them into individual grids, this gives them air space and also distributes plant for maximum fullness. Some of the stems will be shorter than others, check their growth each day and then guide into an empty grid when tall enough. Stems are pretty flexible in beginning (before buds develop), but try to place stems in the grid straight above when possible.
Thank you for the several suggestions on how to support peonies or other plants in similar situations. I better look out for your podcast. This will accompany me while working in my garden!
I’ve found that when staked upwards the water doesn’t drain out of the bloom after a rain and the bloom becomes brown and rots. When drooped over - they drain and dry
Fantastic info!! A question about deadheading them -- is it ONLY good for visually "cleaning" them up and redirecting energy? Is it possible that it could encourage them to rebloom during the same season, the way deadheading works on other flowers like Rudbeckia and Tickseed?
Thanks for great information. I have a huge double peony never been divided. My husband just cut out a section without digging the plant up. We planted the new part. Is there any chance this will come up and bloom when the season starts? Thanks. Mary
I use what I call tomato cages to prop my peonies up and it works pretty good for the main part of the plant, but the stems that grow above the cage with the heavy flowers still droop over. I’m thinking I need an even taller cage to support the actual blooms. Maybe that grid support will work, I’ll check it out! P.S. Are there Peonies with stems that are stronger to start with? Specific species I mean, that you could recommend (I’m in zone 4-5)? I’d appreciate it.🙏
Hi Kelly can you link me to your video about how you make scented oils from older peony blooms. I was lucky to find some awesome scented peonies at my local grocery store and wanted to try to make some peony scented balm / perfume oil. Or just experiment. Thank you and I love your content!
The white blooms are just absolutely fantastic 😍 I have an all white garden bed so I would love to add these! Do you know the variety name of the whites you featured?
How can I keep wasps away from my peonies? I noticed more than five around my front porch and my kids have to walk past them. I want to make sure they don’t attack my kiddos.
Buy your round plant supports at the dollar store. Nothing fancy about them; they've been around for decades. It's not a 'system'. It's a plant hoop for a buck or two. I even have one extra tall with 3 hoops! Had them for years; store them away in the winter.
You can put a few bamboo poles around them and use twine or gardeners tape to circle the plant and keep them up . You can also cut out the heaviest and/oldest peony blooms to make a lovely bouquet and then maneuver the other stems so they can terrine and prop each other up
Since ants are the way peonies are opened up, how do you make sure all the ants are gone before bringing them into the house??? Those little buggers seems to really know how to hide....
I know , that can be an issue . I usually give the blooms a gentle shake over the grass to get them off but you can also give the blooms a quick dunk in a bucket of water to get them off and then dump the bucket of water in the grass to see if the ones you saw came off . 🌸🌸
if a plant doesnt provide me with food, its not worth the time or money. maybe if we all rose up against the governments of the world, we'd be free enough to enjoy the simple things
Great tips! We always get rain this time of year with the Peonies, and boy do they bow down. Illinois 5b
Viewing from Scotland! I love peonies so thanks for your tips.
Great tips on supporting our Peonies. My bloomed after 2 years of waiting. So exciting.

Ty, after decades of watching my peonies always flop, I am going to pay attn this year.
I have an ornamental grass that has quite a stalk on it with a ribbon banner arching up and falling over. In the autumn I save the sturdier stalks for plant stakes the next year or however long they last.

Hi! I just came across your video and I’m watching from South Florida. Your peonies are absolutely gorgeous! I wish I could grow them here.
Thank you so much for explaining about the peonies!
Great video, Kelly, many thanks. Saves me from buying expensive supports from garden centres.

Thank you, great advice. Love your hat too ,where did you get that?
Thanks Rita , I don’t remember where I bought the hat . I git it about 5 years ago . 🌸

This video is perfect for me. I just bought my first peony. I have a red tomato cage but it's ugly.

Kelly I use large old lampshade as support
Mine don't stay on the bush long enough to flop lmao but definitely great information to have for next year!
Ours change colors every year. Is that normal? The ones on side last yr were all like dark pink and this year some are light pink and a dsrk pink.
Your neighbor,New Jersey☺
Hi Jersey Neighbor 👋 Thank you for checking in from the Garden State 🌎🌸😊👍

What about Peonie Trees? Mine are growing great and blooms are beautiful,, but I am worried about the tree stems not being strong enough?
I would always be mindful to cut out any dead , damaged or diseased branches . Keep the strongest branches in place . 🌸

Do peonies grow well in Houston in sun or shade??? Please advise
I would try to do lots if morning and early afternoon sun ( at least 6-7 hours ) and then a dose of afternoon shade if possible 🌸
Thank you for checking in from Houston 🌸👍🌎👏🤗😎
Do you sell Peonis roots?
How can I keep wasps away from my peonies? I noticed more than five around my front porch and my kids have to walk past them. I want to make sure they don’t attack my kiddos.
I plant them in tomato cages. Ans then they just grow with support
Gorgeous! I would like to buy peonies to plant in my garden. I would love red, white and pink peonies. Can you help me, please!
Thank you ❤️♥️❤️♥️
I live in Orange County, South California.
I use tomato cages
Tomato cages are a super idea for peony flower support . Thank you for the great tip . 👍🌸
