  • The Oscar-winning actor remembers how her heightened political consciousness in the early 1970s led to her initial hesitation to take on the leading role in Alan J. Pakula’s psychological thriller.

Just saw Klute again on TV. It truly is a great, soul baring performance, some of the most "real" acting ever put on film. She deserved the Oscar.

Jane Fonda's career is full of extraordinary performances, but I think her work as Bree Daniels in "Klute" is her peak. I have seen the movie dozens of times. I am never tired of it. Thank you, Criterion, for putting a lot of care into the edition of this classic of the American cinema.

Jane Fonda gave an iconic performance in Klute. Her Oscar for this film was so richly deserved, as was her second Oscar for "Coming Home". Great actress!

Criterion hits out of the park with another fantastic gem. Klute has it all! Thrills, chills, felching and hardcore drama. Jane fonda owns as the kids say the charm of joseph stalin.

Iconic. One of the most seminal performances of the 1970s. Pauline Kael about Jane Fonda in Klute:
“As with her defiantly self-destructive Gloria in They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, she never stands outside Bree, she gives herself over to the role, and yet she isn't lost in it--she's fully in control, and her means are extraordinarily economical. She has somehow got to a plane of acting at which even the closest closeup never reveals a false thought and, seen on the movie streets a block away, she's Bree, not Jane Fonda, walking toward us.”

Amazing movie that gets massively overlooked. It’s as good as ATPM (also check out the Paralax View to complete the ‘paranoia’ trilogy). Fonda’s best performance & Sutherland is great. Can’t wait to purchase this.

I had the pleasure, as a student journalist, of interviewing her shortly before she won the Oscar for this iconic performance as Bree Daniels. She still had the hairdo but was having to dodge horrible things being said and written about her because of her stance on the war. I know many still despise her, but she was so generous to me writing about what it was like to be Hollywood royalty. I would be surprised if anyone in that audience, including her fellow nominees, was surprised when her name was called.

Jane Fonda is great in "Klute" (and Donald Sutherland is no slouch either), but the movie itself is edited oddly and I have to say, having seen it for the first time about a week ago, it was pretty easy to figure out who the killer was early on in the movie. I would say it is a solid 3 star movie, which is respectable.

    • @plasticweapon

the editing is innovative, and keeping the killer's identity a secret from the audience is not always such a priority.

Fonda had no clue of what being a call girl/prostitute was like at the time. She's always been a spoiled Hollywood brat. She was the exact WRONG actress to be cast as a call girl, period. It was just another miscarriage with the Academy Awards Committee, which has made other mistakes in their award presentations.
Bella Abzug would've been a better selection for this film.

I have never been able to figure out why, but Jane Fonda has simply always irritated me. She just seems fake. I have never felt that way about any other actor. I usually just like someone and their work, or I don't. I just can't figure out the lukewarm reaction I get when I see a movie of hers or an interview. Just lukewarm. Weird.
