If I got married and my wife asked for a food dehydrator for a wedding gift, I'd feel like I made a pretty good decision in choosing a wife.

I found my Nesco All American Dehydrator at a thrift store for $12. It only had 4 trays. We bought extra trays from amazon. I've used it to dehydrate mushrooms, fruit, and bread to make breadcrumbs. I agree. I love it.

Adding the tray to the lower level is brilliant!

Thank you for your review. I just purchased one from Amazon after reading the review and seeing the recommendation from WireCutter. At first I was disappointed because the Nesco snackmaster is cheaper and seemed to have all things I needed plus fan and controls on top. After seeing your video; I realize this one is indeed a better choice for me. Though more expensive ($107 vs $58), it has nearly twice the trays and soo many extra incerts. I look forward to viewing more of your videos and using my new dehydrator.. The Nesco dehydrator that I just bought is the Gardenmaster FD 1018A. It is a 1000 watt dehydrator, comes with 8 each, tray, 8 roll up trays and 8 spice trays. I think I will plant a little garden today.

Your mom is beautiful as are you. I had a nesco but it's too big for my little apartment. At Goodwill I found a little Dash dehydrator. Perfect for my tiny kitchen.

We have that one with the bottom machine and the one with the top machine. I prefer the bottom one mostly because it has a switch and dial for temp and the top one is digital and can only be set for 48 hrs and you have to remember to go reset it. Those silicon screens are a must for herbs and a little oil helps on them and the trays as well when doing veggies and fruit. We have one of the giant stainless steel machines too but it doesn't get used as much because it blows from the back and tends to blow some of the herbs off the trays.

I've had those round ones in the past but now have the Excaliber and would not trade it for anything.

This sounds silly, but I thank you for making me feel better about the dehydrator I already have...( one just like yours, with the motor on the top, though.)..I've used it for years and have always felt inferior to those with Excalibur machines...woo-hoo, I have a dehydrator posse!
    God bless!

Kind of like cars. You can buy a Cadillac which will take you from point A to point B in luxury for a large price tag or you can get from point A to point B in a Chevy for a lot less money. They both will do the job but one costs a great deal more then the other. Excalibur machines are nice but the Nesco Gardenmaster does the job just fine. I have owned several different dehydrators over the year and this is the one I use constantly.

this might be a dumb question im not sure but why cant you dehydrate meat on the hanging one?

    • @dirtpatcheaven
      @dirtpatcheaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It takes too long and the meat could spoil before it dried out...also if there is too much moisture in the air it could start to mold before drying out properly, it's just too risky. But you can do meat on a solar dehydrator or outside if you can keep bugs off of it, direct sunlight and lots of wind.

I'm concerned about your cold sore outbreaks (stimulated by stress) because these can lead to scarring of the skin and inflammation internally.
I use this medicine Valacyclovir for outbreaks and I follow "Mastering the Zone, by Barry Sears PhD" (this is about 30 years old now) as my dietary guide to reduce inflammation.
Please forgive me if I have offended you darlin, I promise not to mention this again publicly.
Take care of yourself, god bless

Just bought iur first dehydrator this week. Currently figuering out how long to put fruit in there to get it crunchy. Like apples and bananas. Any tips?

Nope, sorry the Excaliber is the better, you can get ones of different sizes and i find they are more efficient then those round ones, Started with Nesco then went to the Excaliber - also cheaper to use on electricity.

I use a solar dehydrator. A DIY build project from scrap lumber. Fully off grid, no power needed (note power cord at 5:07). Easy to find plans online.
I am not saying this is a bad product. It may be an awesome product. Also, I am not saying that this channel is wrong promoting this product, Even if they get income by doing so (I believe in the free market and entrepreneurship -- ergo I hope they make income from this promotion).
But, since it seems this is a promotion, to say this is the "best" dehydrator for a homestead is a bit misleading marketing. Rather -- it depends on the homestead. Doesn't it? And that should be better qualified. Just saying......

Did you know there are NO parts for nesco dehydrators available ??
They will not sell you repair parts !!
    Don't buy ANY nesco dehydrator

I’m going to chime in that it might not be the best idea to buy a used dehydrated because you never know what’s been done with it. We got a used one and whoever owned it before us must have done something to the heating element and our first use on a low heat settling melted the trays and obviously ruined all of our food 😒 kind of a bummer for us but hoping to get a new one soon (maybe Christmas 🤞) thank you for this video!

How energy efficient are dehydraters ? I have heard they use alot of electric. Also how long do they have to run to make jerky ? I have wanted one for a long time but just wondering about my energy bill.

It costs about 5 cents an hour depending on your utility rate. 5 cents per hour would be at about 9-10 cents per kWh.
