Quincy Jones is the One Constant & all the rest personalities are variables…
Given what we know now about these two 😏
A is an excellent producer . But he’s mainly relegated to jazz and R&B . Sometimes he can be condescending . Sometimes he’s has a superiority complex,ex regarding the black race when he’s not totally black. He’s very well informed musically and extremely creative and in my opinion, the second greatest music producer. The best , hands down is Lincoln “ chips “ Moman. Why ? Because he could produce basically any genre of music and recognized the contributions of every race and culture unlike Q, who acts as those blacks created every form of music. Chips recognized every genre, every race and its contribution. Chips produced Aretha’s soul hits including playing the opening guitar riff on RESPECT. He also produced Picketts “ I’m in love “. But in jazz he produced Herbie Manns “ Memphis Underground “. Then he produced the soundtrack to the original “ Thomas Crown Affair “. He produced joe tex “ I gotcha “. He then produced pop hits for BJ Armstrong “ Hooked on a Feeling”, then the rock n roll The Box Tops “ The Letter “ . Not to forget “ Willie Nelson “ Always On My Mind “. Waylon Jennings “ Luckenbach Texas “, country songs. He revolutionized Elvis career with “ Suspicious Minds “. Even in the 90s , he produced Garth Brooks “ the Dance “. Even Dionne Warwicke left Bacharach temporarily to record with Chips . He started with Stax producing Carla Thomas “ gee whiz”. He put together Booker T and the MGs , believing truthfully that Rock n roll was half R&B and half Country infused by gospel. He produced both Neil Diamonds and Bobby Womacks versions of “ Sweet Caroline “. Also he produced both Aretha version of “ Do Right Woman “ and Brenda Lee versions , and preferred Brenda because she brought out the anger aspect whereas Aretha sounded like she was begging ! No one can do what he’s done in his lifetime with producing because he never considered himself a genius because he felt every great record was a contribution of the artist, the producer and the musicians and arranger. He had a gift for crating great songs of feeling and despair. Listen to “ I’ve been down this road before “ by BJ Thomas ! Q is phenomenal, but Chips is the master of human produced music. He has no peers. He rejected the Beatles, Stones and Dylan because he thought they all wrote some great songs and also believed they wrote some crap. Their lps where they wrote every tune, were mixed with about 4 excellent tunes and a bunch of fillers . He wanted every song on the lp to be outstanding . This started after he fought with Neil Diamond after producing an entirely written lp that were mostly crap songs . It was his idea to do holy holy and sweet Caroline and Brother love ,songs Neil thought weren’t that good and became the only memorable songs from those sessions after chips and musicians changed the Melodie’s to make them better. Q made MJ, who was average without him. Chips made everybody he produced better.

Two guys with tremendous egos who can be brilliant but also very condescending to others .
Quincy was really a legend. However, Charlie Rose is such a poor interviewer.

I agree.
He was at first, but the buzz was that he was pressured into a more softball approach. He conformed and survived. Those who wouldn't conform did not. So he's the last one standing in this kind of format - the best of a now barren landscape. Although he's a bit more investigative here. However, Q is very open here and represents the kind of warm engagement I've personally experienced with a relatively remarkable number of musicians.
In Quincy voice”Q. was good not great…he ain’t no Strayhorn, he ain’t no Duke, he ain’t no Prince…overrated

Can never forgive Quincy forcing Miles into re visitingthe Miles Gil Evans stuff…Miles wasn’t well , couldn’t play well, and it wasn’t what Miles wanted to do…it was embarrassing …all for Quincy s ego. shame on Q
Q is a great producer but his ego makes him undesirable !
