Is Room Correction the Answer? The NAD M33 Integrated Amplifier Review (Take 2, Ep:18)

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 22 ต.ค. 2020
  • On September 15, 2020, Roger Kanno reviewed the NAD Masters M33 integrated amplifier-DAC for SoundStage! Hi-Fi and wrote: “NAD’s Masters M33 is an incredible achievement for a leading-edge integrated amplifier. . . . NAD’s implementation of their Hybrid Digital version of Purifi Audio’s Eigentakt amplifier has resulted in excellent sound - and the M33 does so much more. It has nearly every option you could want in an integrated amp, including Dirac Live’s top-flight room correction and a highly capable streaming platform.”
    You can read Roger’s full review here: www.soundstage...
    Roger’s rave review of the M33 earned it a Reviewers’ Choice award when it was published. Now, in this Take 2 episode, Jay Lee takes a second look at the M33 to give his impressions and to make further observations that he thinks are important. Jay also talks about the M33’s Eigentakt amplifier technology and makes reference to the demonstration amplifier that Purifi made to showcase it, which he also reviewed in a previous Take 2 episode. Here’s the link to that video: • Is This the Best Class...

    For me, Dirac room correction took my system to the next level. At first, I did not bother to try it cause the M33 is so good that I did not think it could do much better and I was afraid to lose some sound resolution/details. After Two months I tried it, and it is awesome. The sound stage is huge and for me its like hearing the songs for the first time. For those who are lucky to have the M33, do take the effort. I recommend you use a ruler to accurately position the microphone and do not place it approximately. there is a noticeable difference.

    I'm glad that you mentioned Dirac is a per case basis. I have a separate Dirac unit...and I found the same thing. And like you said...VERY good if you have little to no room correction. Great video!

    I have both Dirac and Anthem Genesis room correction available to me, the former built into my NAD M33 and the latter in my pair of Martin Logan powered subs. I tried calibrating with Dirac several times, was dissatisfied with the results each time and I went back to using the Anthem technology which in my opinion is very effective for my own purposes.

  • @johnlim7720
    @johnlim7720 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Worth noting that to have great sound it's 40% equipment 60% room. People often wonder why the same speaker's sound great in the audition room but sounds bad at their place...it's because of your ROOM. That's why it's best to take with a grain of salt the opinion's of reviewer's because what might sound good in THEIR room might not be the same in yours.

    • @obscurazone
      @obscurazone 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, speakers are the key final ingredient in sound colour, far more so than amplification, so its pretty much pointless listening to reviews on how kit sounds. Room dynamics and multitudes of speakers/cables make it impossible to describe how anything is going to sound in your own place. Pointless.

    Thank you for not talking in absolutes about Dirac! I have seen several reviews do that (mostly positive ones). I did not have great success when doing a few Dirac trials with my B&W 805 & Rel T7i combo (btw. the Rel is amazing!). The result was a somewhat more lifeless sound, with flatter soundstage further back. Imaging/the space between performers also suffered and negated the effect of adding a tube pre 😛 If limited to the bass with time alignment, volume matching etc. turned off turned, it was better, but that setup did not have much problems in the bass region. Will be keen to try it again, now that I have the S400’s, which unfortunately have a tendency to excite my rooms modes 👍

    why didn't NAD utilize the top of the line ESS DAC chips. They used the ESS 9028 and not the ESS 9038. I know I'm probably splitting hairs but if they're trying to market it as a state of the art integrated amp/DAC, they shouldn't be putting in second best. Am I missing something?

    • @gerard3797
      @gerard3797 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Newest is not always better. It uses 9028 pro (8 channel) chip for each channel. This is regarded as one of the best chips in the market and also used for instance in the Benchmark 3 DAC.

Whether or not Home Theater Bypass is included in any integrated amp or pre-amp can be a "make or break" for many people. I believe every reviewer should mention that feature in there reviews.
      Anyone looking to add a stereo-only amp to their existing AVR needs to know this. Many other features can be added later, HTB cannot (to my knowledge). I hope that you'll include that information from now on.
