    Thanks for posting this. I was annoyed by the backlash in the mount and stumbled onto your video while searching around. Had it fixed after a couple of minutes of trial and error. Thanks!

    I have owned this setup for almost a year, and I got to say when I upgrade to a more sophisticated Mount, I'm staying away from Celestron. I'm glad I'm not the only one who had this problem. Someone on Amazon referred to this mount as "a cheap Chinese Gadget" and I think that's a pretty good description. It won't keep up with objects and the backlash is atrocious. It can't really locate objects either, I have to do that manually. Not to mention that this thing is like 1995 technology in the age of smartphones. I'm staying away from Celestron and Amazon when I buy an equatorial mount.

      Well it sounds to me like you had a bad sample of the mount. I will concede that its far from perfect. But being essentially an entry level in goto mounts I'd say that your getting a lot for your money. I have had at least 5 samples of this mount and they all worked well with perhaps a bit of tweaking.

      The original nexstar 8 came out in 2000 not 1995, the 8i came out a little later and the 8i special edition orange tube came out in 2004 as an answer to the meade level north lawsuit, and the SE series came out around 2006. So not 1995 technology but still fundamentally the same as it was in 2000 but with significant software improvements, mainly the 8i vs the original, and the sky align features of the SE and the dovetail system, the 8 and 8i and special edition and special edition had a permanently mounted tube.
      Don't judge all celestron mounts by the single fork gotos. And note that skywatcher and orion eq6/atlas mounts are the same internally as celestron, all made by synta. And don't go thinking meade mounts and LX90/LS/lx85 mounts are any better, most would say they are worse, though the 8" lx90 is a slight improvement over the 8se stability wise, maybe tracking wise due to the az/ra being a worm drive, but the reliability issues of the electronics are definitely a consideration, and the 10 and 12" versions are not stable at all on the thin forks.
      The general consensus is that celestron ASGT mounts were way better than their meade lxd55/75 contemporaries and the AVX is better than the lx85. Synta builds better mounts than bosma, joc and sunny who have built meade mounts over the years.
      Also, an avx is worlds apart from a nexstar SE mount, and has many improvements over the equivalent eq3-5 (eq 5) mounts also made by synta, as celestron is their flagship line. Same applies to cgemII vs eq6. But the gears are the same in both classes.
      If you want to get out of that category you need to jump up to losmandy, takahashi and other premium mounts.
      Ioptron has some interesting mounts but they can be buggy as well. I don't have any first hand experience with all the new "strain wave" type harmonic drive mounts, by ZWO and other Chinese companies, but I used to sell the original heavy duty harmonic drive mounts made by Tim Cann (I can't remember the brand name used), when I was ar OPT from 2006-2011. So my insider info is a bit dated, but I was still around people using some of the newer stuff till around 2021, so I saw some of the ioptron cem series mounts and the celestron cgx mounts in action. And I have personally owned ASGT and 2 losmandy Gemini mounts in the past, as well as orion and celestron non goto cg5/svp mounts with non goto drives, as well as cg4 and GSO Polaris clones (star-hoc/stellarvue m4/svd types, all the same), and currently am rocking an astroview with dual axis drives and a couple of vintage fork/wedge SCTs because I couldn't afford to replace my previous scopes which were stolen about 6 years ago, and had to take advantage of some really good deals and trades from friends and former customers/club dark site acquaintances.
      But being in the trenches dealing with mostly.celestron and meade mod level stuff, as well as higher end stuff, during that 5 year period, I can safely say that celestron is your best bet in that class, avoid meade electronics (but the acf optics are great, I owned an 8" pre lawsuit "advanced ritchey chretien" which was later renamed "advanced coma free" since it wasn't a true RC. Mine was one of the last USA made ones and was from a de forked lx200R).
      Again, don't judge celestron by your experience with that one example of an 8se.

    Thank you! I'm just starting to play with the Nexstar SE and EAA. And I've found - after I do the initial alignment and then do a GOTO to an object - I have to wait about a minute or two to let the backlash settle before the mount will track the object.
    Sometimes the mount will not get close enough to the object on a given GOTO. In that case - I need to do a plate-solve which incorporates an auto-sync. The computer will calculate the movement the mount must go - in order to get closer to the object. But before I can do that plate-solve - I need to let the backlash settle - because the mount will not yet be tracking - and the image for a plate-solve will be blurry. I watch the image in live-view within SharpCap. And I can see when the mount actually starts tracking. Then I do the plate-solve which allows me to close-in on the object. But I didn't realize I could adjust the backlash until I watched your video. And your method of doing it is brilliant! Thanks! :-]

    Hello there.
    I have an SE 8 Celestron used about 10 times in 2 years, I was just raising the telescope up, and then all of a sudden, it started popping and cracking.
    and now it wants to jerk a little bit going up. What do you think is wrong with it.
    Thank you John.

    Good video. I tried to fix backlash on my NexStar SE8 - it helped but I need to max out values to 99 and still it makes some time to move it in other direction...
    Something really wired. Any ideas how adjust it mechantically?

      Hey sorry to hear about the issue. There is a baring in there that can fail. I'm almost certain that's what's going on with yours. You can fix it DIY but its not a really easy thing to do unfortunately.

      Yup, that's the baring broken for sure. I have replaced one before, again it's a bit of a process to get it done. I don't really have a recourse I can recommend on how to do this.

    Hey thank you for the video . Do you usually have the locking knob that connects the telescope to the mount on the the upper side of the mount ? This video is a big help . In the 8se I have I knew there was something that could be done to help the backlash . Also do you think it might help in the setup process making a more accurate alignment? Thank for any info in advance.

    • @AVTAstro
      @AVTAstro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad the ideo was helpful. The scope lock knob should be in the down position per Celestron but the mount does work just fine with it up. I think the scope is easier to mount that way. The backlash should make the GoTo more accurate as well.

  • @Vidar2032

    I found that there is not so much backlash in the gears, but the ball bearings (5 ID × 10 OD × 4 H, flanged) in the axle for the pinion gear are crap. They have lots of play, so you can clearly see that this gear and axle moves or 'climbs', as much 1-2 mm sideways on the large gear attached to the scope axis before the scope actually starts to move. I have just ordered 3 new precision ceramic bearings as I don't like the workaround method via the menu. It just doesn't fix the problem with crappy ball bearings :-)

    • @AVTAstro
      @AVTAstro  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have seen that bearing be 100% smashed on a used scope I had. It's a fairly easy replacment but I agree a weakness. If I ever come across another, I'll be sure so make a video about it. Thanks for pointing out this potential issue. 👍
