In Italy he wasn't really 'understood' if I can say that. Right now in our country we have some immigration issues, and this song, this artist is wrongfully put in between (not that it matters, but he's 100% Italian). The song with which he participates with the title "Money" is dedicated to his father who is an alcoholic and left home but always came back from the family, tormenting he and his mother looking for "money" to buy alcohol

    English lyrics :
' It's really hot down in the suburbs

You will be upset by a liar
It looked like love to you, it was something else
    He's drinking champagne during Ramadan
On tv they are airing Jackie Chan
He's smoking Shisha and asks me how I'm doing
He asks me how I'm doing
You alredy know how things are going going going
I think faster to try to figure out if you're going to fool me tomorrow
I have no time to clear things up 'cause I finally found out what you are
It hurts to be alive when you lose your pride you leave home out of the blue
    You, tell me if
You only cared for the money money
As if you had any money
Tell me whether you miss me or you don't give a fuck
You used to ask me how I was doing doing doing
Now things are going going going
What you're supposed to say you haven't said yet
Betrayal is a bullet in your chest
Keep all the compassion to yourself
You keep lyin' at home but you know she knows
Sittin' there she'll be asking me
Asking me how I'm doing doing doing
She already knows how things are going going going
I think faster to figure out whether tomorrow you're gonna fool me
I have no time to clear things up 'cause I finally found out what you are
    It hurts to be alive
    when you lose your pride
I figured it out in one second, from me
    You only wanted the money
As if I had any money
Before you would talk to me till late
You used to ask me how I'm doing doing doing
Now how are things going going going
My son, my son, darling, come over here [Arabic]
You used to tell me while playing your games fiercely
My son, my son, darling, come over here [Arabic]
Wanting so bad to bring things back to what they were
I didn't ask you for your money...
    It hurts to be alive
    When you lose your pride
You leave home out of the blue
    You, tell me if
Only cared for the money money
As if I had any money

The money song does not talk about money, but about a father who left his son when he was little, and only occasionally returns to him and asks him for money. He speaks of love for his father and for this difficult relationship. Alessandro has an Egyptian father and an Italian mother. He was born and lives in Milan. The Egyptian father returned to Egypt when he was small and only shows up once in a while.

I don't know why you do this, but I'm sure people are not so stupid to believe you, every one can look for a translation of the song on google and see that what you say is completely false. What saddens me is that you could have done that yourself and spare yourself the shame of sounding like an idiot.. or perhaps you are doing this on purpose, and that's even worse cause it would mean you are cruel. Hi, I'm Italian and would love to give a little backgroud to how he got to rapresent us, beside the song. Sanremo Festival is the most important musical event in Italy, whoever wins gets to take part to Eurovision rapresenting the country. This year there was plenty of very (very) old, traditional italian music and singers, people we've been listening to for 40 years around here. Plus, we are currently under a government that strongly attacks and tries to isolate anything that differs from 'the traditional italian culture', any kind of foreign vibe gets strong criticism (and Mahmood is hald italian half egiptian). Also, youger generations in Italy are being criticised, judged and not supported, at all. With this, I am extremely glad and proud we'll be rapresented by a young, hardworking songwriter with a diverse etnic background both in his personal life and his music. This entry tells me my country is not giving in to the attitude of the current politics in charge, is not giving in to fear, rejection, judgment and isolation. So I really don't mind how this will work out, as many others I am so happy and proud.

This song is a fusion style, and as you have well understand is well written (2 expert authors has help Alessandro Mahmoud - artist named Mahmood) to arrange what he wrote. As you told this kind of song growths little by little inside and it is certainly a young style. He won also "Sanremo Youth" with a song that we could consider the first part of this song, "Gioventù bruciata". He is a writer, coming from a very good music school in Milan and he wrote already songs for famous singers. Good luck Alessandro!

It’s very different from the songs we usually bring to Eurovision but I think it could do well.

For those who are interested in, here's the translated lyrics for "Soldi":
    Money
It’s really hot down in the suburbs
Mum don’t worry I’m on my way home
You will be upset by a liar
It looked like love to you, it was something else
    He’s drinking champagne during Ramadan
On tv they are airing Jackie Chan
He’s smoking shisha and asks me how I’m doing
He asks me how I’m doing, doing, doing
You already know how things are going, going, going
I think faster to try to figure out
If you’re going to fool me tomorrow
I have no time to clear things up
‘Cause I finally found out what you are
    It hurts to be alive
    When you lose your pride
You leave home out of the blue
    You, tell me if
You only cared for the money, money
As if you had any money, money
Tell me whether you miss me or you don’t give a damn
You used to ask me how I was doing, doing, doing
Now how are things going, going, going
What you’re supposed to say you haven’t said yet
Betrayal is a bullet in your chest
Keep all the compassion to yourself
You keep lyin’ at home but you know she knows
Sittin’ there she’ll be asking me
Asking me how I’m doing, doing, doing
You already know how things are going, going, going
I think faster to try to figure out
If you’re going to fool me tomorrow
I have no time to clear things up
‘Cause I finally found out what you are
    It hurts to be alive
    When you lose your pride
I figured it out in one second
    That you, from me
    You only wanted money, money
As if I had any money, money
Before you would talk to me till late
You used to ask me how I’m doing, doing, doing
Now how are things going, going, going
My son, my son, darling, come over here
You used to tell me while playing with me looking proud
My son, my son, darling, it seemed real
the desire, the desire to bring things back to what they were
I didn’t ask for your money
    It hurts to be alive
    When you lose your pride
You leave home out of the blue
    You, tell me if
    You only wanted money, money
As if I had any money, money
You leave the city without anybody knowing
Yesterday you were here, where are you now, dad?

I think this is a song that grows on you the more you hear it. It probably should have won at that time, that's how good it really is.
Now the real problem with songs like these, is that the studio version is the one that you need to hear in order to understand the song... Its COMPLETELY diffrent listening to a studio version of a techno song than listening it live, so that technical difficulty didn't allowed this song to truly shine.

    This is the translation
He talks about his egyptian father who was alcholic man, he says "he drinks champagne during Ramadan" . He left his family alone and he returned to visit them just for money to buy more alchol. He also said that he remember when he was a child his father called him "darling" but he was just money, not their love... please listen it carefully.. it means a lot! I had the pleasure to see him live in Sanremo, he's just amazing! The lyrics is very deep, unfortunatly english translation can't give the same vibes
Plus he's a young songwriter, he composed many songs for famous italians singer (like Marco Mergoni), it is not a simple love or useless meaning song composed by strangers, he composed it
