Hey Joe, I am a long time Garmin user and used Awesome Golf for more than a year, almost every day. I personally believe that the Awesome Golf software has a bit of a fade bias as well as reducing the shot shape of a draw. However, for the last 4 months have been using the Garmin with GSPro and I have seen a big difference with shot shape accuracy.
So long as you have "Force Realistic" selected on GSPro you get a very accurate and true spin axis and shot shape. Awesome Golf for me as always been very accurate with carry distance but the biggest issue is their shot shape, especially for a draw.
What I think a really fun test would be is if you had your Garmin set up your PC running GSPro while you are also using the GC3 with GSPro via on another PC.
Having the same software running the same rules would be a true test to what the data for each unit is actually gathering! :)
Yes, I have used both Awesome Golf and GSPro as well. Awesome Golf seemed to be ok, but GSPro is so much more accurate with the R10. For me Awesome Golf did not show shot shape at all, and I feel that GSPro is very good at showing the correct shot shape. GSPro is far superior in every way.
Hey thanks for this comment. So I think awesome golf shows or represents the shot slightly different with the tracer on the screen on GS Pro a -4.0 spin axis for instance looks like it moves a lot more right to left. But the data itself will be the same so both softwares will show the -4.0 spin axis as a figure as it comes directly from the Garmin but it will appear to be more of a draw on GS Pro vs Awesome Golf.
Thanks Joe for all you do. I use the garmin daily. Ball to screen distance is really important for wedges or very lofted shots regarding spin i.e. 8 iron and more lofted. Best way to capture "more correct" spin readings for these is to use the RCT ball and hit it 3/4 strength because if you compress the ball too much it wont start spinning fast enough in a very short distance to screen. That works better for me. But if I hit an 8 iron at 87-91 mph, I can get spin readings as low as 3000 at times when it was a well hit shot. As for fades vs draws, it only reads these shapes well when the ball is hit in the middle of the club face with proper swing path... it doesn't take gear affect in to its calculations/estimations. Lastly, Garmin responds the best with smoother tempos i.e. in the 3 zone and not as good when swing tempo is too quick (2) or too high (4-5)... Sure, you take the good and the bad together. What would have been very interesting to see is exactly how much farther apart were the balls between GC quad and garmin... So if garmin shows a fade and 200 yards while the GCQ shows a draw and 205 yards and they are 10 yards apart in the fairway, that aint too too bad and is playable by getting semi-quality readings on the garmin....also justifies saving thousands of dollars too!! LOL.
As a weekend warrior, all i care about are my distances, and if my equipment picks up the initial trajectory. Very pleased with my R10 for my budget
The R10 is absolutely fantastic for that and it's great on the driving range.
1 thing i should point out in all these garmin vs tests. Even though you think you lasered both units exact if you are even off by 1 or 2* thats where you will see different readings as far as a fade or draw. Doesnt mean 1 is wrong and 1 is right just means that 1-2* off can affect every shot
Yes absolutely alignment is KEY. I've found the Garmin to be really good since I've had it with all the data. Like I've always said the only real issue I have with it is spin axis and it really shows up when you mishit woods and driver due to the gear effect.
Joe.. I am also an R10 fan. I had my son over to swing in my simulator the other day and his swing speed is much faster than mine and my set up had a lot of trouble giving any accurate numbers. I figured it was the distance from ball to screen so wanted to ask what your distance was on your setup??
Yes it's really interesting Garmin actually has a chart on their website that shows the distance you need for your ball speed to get calculated spin with RCT balls. I currently have mine just over 9ft ball to screen but all my videos except this new one I had 10 ft ball to screen.
I'd love to see a comparison of the MLM2PRO and the original skytrak. Used Skytrak is similar price to MLM2PRO and offer real differences between the 2, so the data could be a huge piece in a buying decision.
Unfortunately I don't have access to the skytrak or the plus. Just doing my own research though it definitely has a LOT of limitations and in my opinion a used Foresight GC2 is much better!
Good video. The R10 is my old reliable and never misses a swing. However, you noticed something that I see too, and that is if it misses the club data, (basically a mis-read for the R10) it gives wonkey data. Even more so with RTC balls or marked balls. I've had a metal 3-wood show the worst shank with a marked ball even with a dead perfect shot (the R10 showed no club data). I admit that is rare, but I did it tonight on the DCP-Sawgrass twice. So yeah, there is like stuff happening that does not compute on occasion. So thank you for doing that comparison. Considering a GC3 verses R10, I feel comfortable. Great video!
I don't even want an R10, but I see JLag post and I click. 😂 It'll be interesting to see what Garmin does over the next year or so. Yes, the R10 is super affordable (comparatively), but the small radar tech is always going to have spin axis issues and there are a lot of options for sim golfers with more and more coming.
Hahahaha thanks mate! I appreciate the support
Just need the tourney rounds back 😅
We would have it made if we could get the Garmin connection reliability matched up the shot data performance of the MLM2Pro. I still get 2-4 disconnects every day with MLM2, even on direct connection.
Great comparison Joe, I’ve had my R10 for close to 18 months and feel that I’m outgrowing it, getting to the stage where I would like more consistency and shot shape, I plan on setting up a full screen sim with GSPRO, bayside seems to have the better quality screens, I’ve see some with the floppy sagging screens and feel what a waste. So hopefully will get a top quality screen with a laser projector, by then hopefully some more economical replacements for the R10 will be available, staying away from the mlm2 due to higher price subscriptions, I would rather pay outright for an unlocked launch monitor that allows me to choose which software I run on it, most likely GSPRO.
Thanks for keeping us up fo date and all the effort you put into testing, I feel that you give an honest unbiased opinion.
Cheers
Ken
Thanks Ken I really appreciate that comment! Yes the subscription cost is annoying unfortunately I can see the industry going this way. It will be interesting to see if Garmin are working on another unit and if they are will it be subscription based as well...? Not really Garmin's way of doing things but I wouldn't be surprised.
One thing to note that as a very good golfer, this is pretty much best case scenario for the R10. Since the R10 can't account for gear effect, lesser skilled golfers who aren't hitting center-face contact as often might see even more variance between shot shape/spin axis.
I agree. I am a crappy golfer that spends a lot of time looking for my ball in the right side rough and woods. But with the Garmin R10 and GS Pro I look pretty good. I can slice a shot that I know would be way out of bounds but the R10 with GS Pro shows I am in the middle of the fairway. With RCT balls or regular balls. The RCT balls just give me a lot of misreads.
I am not knocking the R10 as I think it is a good value, but trying to use it to really analyze a bad golfer would be a mistake.
Hey Joe...
Always enjoy and learn from your videos...not trying to be a smart*** but why does Foresight always appear as the King in the simulator world? Is it really that good/perfect?? Thanks Joe!
Hey mate yes foresight is a known and reputable brand that has been doing this for a long time. It's trusted by the majority of the PGA Tour pros.. really Trackman and Foresight are known in the industry for being the major players. Uneekor is definitely up there and making a big name for themselves and I honestly believe they will make the big 3 very very soon.. their overhead units are absolutely amazing.
Awesome test! Would love to see a R10 head to head outdoors at a range!
Yes I think the R10 would be very competitive! Unfortunately I'm not a member at a course and don't have access to a really good range to test it. Maybe one day that happens 🤞🤞🤞🤞
I look forward to that!! @@JLagGOLF
Is your garmin in line with ball? Seems if you have it slightly left or turned slightly left i may give a fade bias.
I have both R10 and MLM2PRO, I would said Garmin already did it's best in the only radar base situation. MLM2PRO is way better, but the special dot ball is a must to have.....
How much of the data difference can be attributed to using awesome golf vs. gspro? I assume their algorithms are different no?
This what my comment was too. As user of both software, I find GSPRO to be much more accurate with shot shaping than Awesome Golf. I believe their algorithms pair down the spin axis and if anything have a fade bias.
@@Bleedingblue05my understanding is any spin related data is straight from the device, only calculated fields like carry would be different between different softwares. Ball speed and spin shouldnt change
@@PJo336 from what I’ve seen there is a noticeable difference between the shot shaping between GSPro and Awesome Golf.
@@Bleedingblue05 with the same device? I would be very surprised if spin axis were different in diff software both reading from the r10 but I guess I don’t know how awesome golf works. This is of course assuming everything is similar like a flat lie, no wind etc
There will be no difference in the metrics like HLA, VLA, backspin, Spin Axis, ball speed, club speed, any club data. These are all taken from the unit and imported into the software's. The only difference you will see is in the carry distance, total distance how far left or right the ball ends up.. things like that. As these are the metrics that are influenced by the course conditions and environmentals.
Even if the ball is sitting on a 3 degree right slope the spin axis number reported in the app or GS Pro will be the exact same as this metric is taken directly from the unit. The difference you will see ingame is that the ball will end up further right on the 3 degree right slope. But the spin axis data will be unchanged.
have you try the connector with spin ?
Hi Joe. Watched a lot of yours and DM's videos. I have always suspected Awesome golf accentuated distance to appeal to people over the Garmin app. These increased distances may support this. If you are ever short of videos to do, same thing with Garmin dat might be interesting. Cheers mate.
Yes the carry distances were a little long but not by much.. I honestly think it was due to the slightly higher ball speed and launch. The other thing was with the wedges the lower spin. The AG app for me is just fantastic the way it lays out all the data.
For some reason I believe my Garmin shorts me 10 yards in distance - weird. And I use the awesome golf app
My R10 has a massive fade bias. Drives me nuts😢
It did look a little that way in this test unfortunately 😭
Try backing the ball away from your screen a bit more then. That might help, if it’s happening with faster shots especially.
I mainly use my garmin at the range for more accuracy
It certainly is more accurate at the range! Radar definitely likes being outdoors more than indoors.
Who gives a shit about spin rate? Are you all elite golfers in the chat?
Spin is very important and really needs to be accurate for things like carry distance to be accurate. Luckily with the RCT ball the R10 is incredibly accurate with spin 👍
Why would anyone get the r10 nowadays. It’s off more than it’s right.
Yeah like I've been saying for almost a year now for me the budget king is absolutely the MLM2PRO. The R10 does have its place for people who are realllly on a tight budget or want a more reliable connection but for me personally it's had its day.
@@JLagGOLFMLM has an $200 USD annual fee though?
@@DosLobos yes the MLM2PRO has the annual subscription but if you think about what you’re getting (gc quad like data) it’s a really good deal
Can you use the MLM outside at the range?
