      I too have a couple of Arios approx the same size as yours. I too highly recommend terracotta pots though with one suggestion. Given the size of the tap root and the depth to which they can grow, could I recommend you re pot them in a taller pot? Your soil is great - similar to mine except that I have sifted out the particles less than 0.5mm in size - makes it a teensy bit more free-draining.

    one of my fav's. roots look excellent. some ?'s if you have time: how often do you water it, how old is it, did it flower this fall, did you grow it from seed, ever worry about adding limestone to the soil mix, have any other arios?

      Hi Bob :-D This Ariocarpus I bough as a young seedling around 25 years ago but it is slow growing but it was very tiny when I first bought it :-D it has never flowered for me, I water it in the Spring and Summer about once a month always making sure that the soil is fully dry before watering it again, I keep the soil totally dry from September until late March, I have never added limestone to the soil mix but I have heard that other growers do, I have some Ariocarpus fissuratus seedlings too that I have grown from seed this year :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle for a wonderful weekend XXXX

    Your plant looks really healthy, Lynn. Well done! They aren’t the easiest to grow, but a challenge can be a good thing 😸 I have a couple of A. retusus 2-year old seedlings that remain obstinately about 1cm tall. I have left them alone so they will develop (hopefully) a strong taproot, but plan to re-pot next year. Cactus power to you & Hans from Oxfordshire 👋

    yesterday i bought pumice, hard to find here. At least i thought i bought pumice; I googled pumice ... the bag appaerd and it looked like it so a thought yeaah found it pumice. But as i checked the bill i bought VT PREMIUM SUBSTRATE. Really pfff. But when i read the information label it says : In addition to the ideal effect on the pond floor and banks, premium substrate can also be used excellently as potting material or even as filter material. The key here is the porosity of premium substrate, which makes it very airy. So i think its even good as pumice, don't you think? I try to make the same soil as you, as i search for the material you use, but very hard to find here in Belgium and on-line ofcourse. Liked the video a lot!! Love from Belgium.😍😍🥰

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Carine :-D the good news is that the VT premium substrate can be used in the same way as grit or pumice as its airy and lets water in and out of the substrate and will still be perfectly fine to use as a pumice and grit alternative for your cactus and succulent soil, I would be happy to use it myself as a grit/pumice alternative, so happy you loved the video, I will be repotting quite a few more this Spring and Summer haha, thanks so much Carine for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Belgium for a fantastic evening XXXX

    let me start by saying you have a great channel and I have been watching for a long long time ..I do have a question about Ariocarpus specifically ones hat are grafted is there a way to De-graft the scion form the rootstock ? like de grafting an ariocarpus from a pereskiopsis ? or can you reroot an ariocarpus any help with these questions would be great than you >>

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So happy you love my channel and you have been one of my very long term Subs and thank you so much for your long time support, It can be very tricky to re root an Ariocarpus once it has been degrafted, I have not tried it myself, but I know of a couple of growers who degrafted their Ariocarpus as they wanted them to grow on their own roots, but they refused to re root and they had to re graft them again, it may be possible to do but can be a bit difficult for Ariocarpus to root itself once removed from the grafting stock, because Ariocarpus have large taproots when grown from seed, and without a taproot it can be tough to get them to root on their own, thanks so much for your wonderful comments and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle XXXX

    Hello I am thinking about buying an ariocarpus plant but can you tell me if it’s an easy cactus to take care of or would it be to difficult for me

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats fantastic news that you ant to buy an Ariocarpus K.Titus :-D they are amazing cacti but can be a little bit tricky when it comes to watering etc as they have tuberous roots that are a little prone to rot, but if you pot them up in an extra well draining soil mix, of 50% small grit and 25% Horticultural sharp sand and 25% loam soil they will do well and I find that keeping them in a clay pot is better for the drainage too, Ariocarpus retusus is a great one to start off with, as long as you are extra careful with the watering and keep them totally dry over the Winter, they will grow well for you although they are slow growers but wonderful and very unique little cacti to grow :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comments and for watching and sending lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Friday and weekend ahead XXXX
