Do you balance the spider base first, no mention of this, and once you get the 1 to 2mm gap from the spring adjustment and you find the spirit level you use on the record platter is not balanced where should you adjust from? Is it the base feet or the springs
it is leveled in two parts, the supporting spider first, via the threaded pointed feet, then you leave it alone. The suspended top is placed in position and leveled with the adjustment screws in the arm posts. because I already had some cheap laser levels , I used those to level the top, without effecting the suspension with any weight. I now realize that if I was going to be that anal retentive about it, I should have measured with the weight of a record on the platter.
This is one fantastic turntable and I've had mine now for 18 years, but cannot understand why Michell do not fit the Orbe screw down record clamp as standard to the Gyrodec and SE models instead of having it as a money maker (oop's sorry an accessory). I believe the basic price of a Gyrodec SE is now £2,700 up £600 in the last few months and it deserves better than the clamp supplied. The screw down Orbe clamp is a great addition and improves the sound no end. Just checked 20.11.23 and since I posted the above 11months ago this turntable has increased in price another £800 and now retails for £3,500. The bank of England inflation calculator is telling me the price I paid £880 in 2004 should now cost me £1,557.07 in 2023. That's without a tonearm or any improvements to motor control, fitting the screw down clamp or improving the suspension, so where's the additional £2, 000 come from. Shocking really because they want you to spend £5,500 for the Orbe to get the improvements.
I do not like the cylindrical weights on the platter bottom, that weight should ideally be a continuous piece, the only reason to do this is to reduce cost and make it look nice, also the base should not be symetrical, anything symetrical encourages standing waves. suspension inserts maybe should have low friction PTFE. Being picky of course, its a beautiful deck, but its not the perfect deck.
@ before one criticizes , it should be understood that this is not a cost no object design, but rather a best basic turntable for the lowest cost possible with audiophile performance .
@@engjds Interesting comment regarding the symmetry, if you know of a turntable that isn't symmetrical then please enlighten us. Why is it a bad design? Is it because it's not a slab of MDF, it hasn't got rubber feet, you don't like the weights or because its belt drive? or the chassis is susspended like many other turntables?. The Hi-fi press don't think it's a bad design, as do the hundreds, if not thousands of people who own one, including me. I would dearly like to know what you consider to be the perfect turntable, bearing in mind the multitude of options regarding tonearms, cartridges, cables and budget. Regarding the weights, they add mass and as long as the platter is balanced what difference should it make? The good thing about the Gyrodec and Gyrodec SE is that the chassis is designed to accommodate just about any tonearm and therefore just about any cartridge at any price. For a motor unit now costing £3,500, it ain't cheap nor is it considered budget or basic, but it is very upgradable and very versatile. The only limitations to this design is the user and their inability to be adventurous.
Fabulous turntable. But sorry I need to mention when assembling high end instruments of any kind. Please do not drop a hand full of screws into your palm and insert them one at a time while fumbling about with the screw driver in the other hand. In the Scientific/Aerospace/Motorsports engineering world the fixings are laid out on a separate work surface. Then picked up one at a time put into place. Then screwed in with the other hand. Dropping a screw driver/Allen key/ Ratchet point down on a fragile part costing thousands is something that can easily be avoided with correct procedures.
Out of curious, does those Suspension Pillars Thrust ball come out if you turn it upside down? I wanted to make sure mine comes with it since I bought mine used. I think there is none. Also, the main bearing assembly has a thrust ball inside as well??? Does it come out if you turn it upside down? Can you please confirm? Thanks.
the thrust balls are tiny, looking like what is found on the end of a ball point pen, and can be purchased as parts, if you can navigate the Michell site to find that page. the main bearing uses a ball and cup design, separated by an oil film like a gas engine main crank bearing, and can also be purchased as a single part.
@@martinda7446 I don’t have a problem with my OL Resolution turntable it’s wonderful but my previous Linn was a nightmare. As well as bouncy floors I have walls that are anything but straight!
@@rongreen1538 Ha ha Yes floors bounce at just around the frequency of an LP12 and many undamped decks. I've experienced the same, a light step in to a room and the thing bounces all over the place. I set up turntables at a high end dealer in London for a couple of decades. A lightweight shelf on the wall is as good an upgrade as you can make if you have suspended floors, regardless of suspension design. Glad you are enjoying your OL PS I have set up hundreds of Gyros and can confirm they are top performers at a decent price
What I can’t understand is why they don’t have a speed switch at least on the HR supply. It honestly wouldn’t be difficult instead of moving the belt across manually which introduces oil and contaminants to the belt itself.
@@vice4134 you have natural oils on your hands…just look at album sleeves that leave fingerprints all over them. I still think they could easily add a speed switch to the HR
@@charlesgund4812 Well, I think Michell's goal is to keep it simple and neat. You don't want more buttons and complicate things. If natural oils bothers you, you can always wear cotton gloves before you touch your turntable. Or even a microfiber gloves could do the trick too.

As someone who put one of these together last year. I wish this was available then. The included instructions are woeful. The deck is fantastic though.
@@madmeister407 They both have 4 wheels. My Technics SL-L2 is better because it has linear tracking and quartz lock direct drive a 3 inch long tonearm for extremely low mass, you can't beat that!!
Fact is you're stuck with an outdated TP4 cartridge, you can't even adjust the tracking force which means the effective mass of your tonearm is irrelevant.Linear tracking is a good idea when done right but was a gimmick on mass produced japanese turntables. Some even had the tonearm fitted to the lid, ha ha ha. If your happy so be it but please do not try and convince me the Technics SL-L2 is a good turntable. Good by.
I challenge anybody to mount the same cartridge on the Michell and a Thorens,, Project or a Rega turntable and a person being blindfolded and see if they can hear the difference, I bet not. This is a waste of money, you can buy a very high end pair of speakers for the same price and have better results.
Are you talking out of experience or out of your ass? I bet it's the latter, since I've compared a few TTs with the same cart in my system and the differences are obvious within 15 seconds of listening.

Glossed over the seating of springs and dressing the tone arm cable properly, no doubt both key to correct operation

Moving the belt doesn't introduce oil at all.

A bit disappointing. I’ve read “how to build” - instead it is “how to assemble. Quite a difference.
