Am I the only one who felt bad for Patrick more than Marion? I get the situation and norms in the 50’s. But still she did a really horrible thing and she made a lot of mistakes (although her character development was perfect) and she ruined Patrick’s life and honestly I cried for Patrick when I read it

Yes! She ruined Patrick's _and_ Tom's life, I honestly hated her and thought she's a horrible human being. The book wants you to feel bad for her, and I do feel bad for women that were really in that situation in real life, but... she deliberately made someone's life miserable and didn't think for a second how it would affect her husband who she supposedly loves. Total selfish bitch.

bro Patrick ruined a marriage ,a whole relationship . Marion loves Tom so bad and she wants to be by his side even though she knows it all. Why would someone mess with a taken man/woman. He was being extremely egoistic and he clearly stated that he will do anything to “remove” Marion . Like he said “ i can deal with a wife” . He wanted her to be miserable. Thats fucking awful and im glad karma got him

okay so many conflicting feelings here
    1) the book was kind of hard to understand with the journal entries in the beginning, but I kinda a figured it out after the first like 20 pages
    2) I was holding Harry's character (tom) to like a god complex, and then was totally disappointed in him. he was totally a jerk to Marion. I can empathize with the fact that he was terrified, but he treated her like utter crap for most of the book.
    3) Marion was honestly one of the best characters in the book. She obviously did the horrible thing to Patrick, and made numerous mistakes following that, as it went on you could see her character development, which I thought was super great.
    4) we totally should have had more Julie content, I loved her.
    5) I feel like maybe an epilogue would have helped the story. like just tying up the ends
    - things like:
    where Marion goes
did Patrick and tom like reconcile, or did they just need closure?
    patricks implied death?
    6) Emma, Dawson, and Harry are PERFECT for the roles they got casted. It made it so much easier to read the book because their call pictured and casted perfect.
    okay yeah thats it haha

I literally agree with you on everything! Was holding out so much hope for Tom, but in the end he really is the worst human in this story. And yes! An epilogue would have been so nice. I know sometimes authors like to leave things to the imagination, but with this being such a rough story it would have been nice to see if each of the characters ended up getting what little of a happy ending they could.

To be honest, I don't think Marion stayed with Tom to try and keep his reputation intact, I think she did it more for herself. I vaguely remember her saying that she wanted to sort of portray herself as the "forgiving" wife and help Tom feel better when SHE was the one who made him feel broken first place. I think at one point, Marion lost sight of her love for Tom, and simply wanted Patrick out of the picture so she could have him to herself, BUT when she went after Patrick is when I lost respect for her. She was too much of a coward to confront her husband (since he was the one who had actually hurt her) , because deep down she's always known that he didn't love her the same we she loved him, so instead she made it that she was the only thing he would have left to love.
By the way this is in no way me trying to defend Tom, because he was awful to Marion. I get that that was a different time, and that there was no way he and Patrick could realistically be together, but how he strung Marion along and used her as a pawn was terrible. I also don't really think that Tom has ever had any feelings for Marion, and was just trying to prove to himself that he was not actually gay, because it is very apparent that he has internalized homophobia as well as hatred for himself. Despite me not liking Marion, I appreciate the fact that you pointed out how many time Tom gaslit her and made her think that she was crazy (which was absolutely not ok) but at the end of the day Marion should have confronted TOM, instead of being selfish and sending Patrick to jail. Additionally, I don't think it was fair to ask Patrick to "share" him but I also understand that he didn't really have much else of a choice there. In all honesty out of the three main characters, I probably liked Tom the least because he never took into account others' feelings, and thought that it didn't matter what happened to anyone else as long as he could be with Patrick, and his reputation would be safe.

As you said, the look, the dialogues, what he does and the way he does things... it's incredible. 11:09 ...and also how far we still have to go. In some countries, homosexuality is still illegal and corrective rape is a common practice. The first country to legalize gay marriage was only in 2001. And as of 2021, only 29 out of 195 countries have made laws allowing it. Obviously any progress is good progress, but it's not like the struggle is over yet.

This book had so much potential, but in the end it felt awfully rushed. All chapters were wonderful, I enjoyed how different love is when seen from Marion’s infatuation and from Patrick’s passion. I’ll I particularly loved this last one, because Tom was so beautifully depicted that you just HAD to love him!... I guess that’s why it was so disappointing when you got to see what an a** he was to his wife. But anyway, after the jail chapter, it just feels like “and well that happened and just wanted to let you know, ok bye” ugh...

the first 70% of the book I genuinely felt pity for Marion bc it’s clear that she was being strung along in this basically fake marriage and being lied to by Tom and Patrick. to the point where I thought the reason the book was gonna be so sad was because of how she was mistreated and used but then things took a turn. When Marion wrote that letter and got Patrick arrested, all of my pity turned into rage and confusion. What was she looking to gain from that? She loves Tom so much but didn’t consider his feelings once! How did she not think how that would hurt Tom? And at this point in the story, her relationship with Tom was clearly not a possibility bc he said they had a “modern marriage” and they “had an understanding”. Hello Marion, That’s pretty clear that he is not really part of this marriage and is gay. Use some context clues girl. And She did all of that because she was jealous? Someone tell me why she did that? She put them through so much pain and suffering by throwing him in prison and then she wants them to read her confession together when Patrick is on his deathbed?? Because she feels guilty?? Maybe you should’ve thought about that before sending the letter Marion. Her confession is only going to cause more pain for both of them. Knowing that the person you trusted with your deepest secret betrayed you for literally No reason and did so hap-hazardously. What good does knowing she was the cause of their separation do for them?
Non thing. It Only causes more pain. She didn’t even gain anything from doing that either!!! Guess what Marion, Tom was still gay and now he’s depressed cuz the love of his life in locked in prison! So what was the point? What she did was so selfish and evil and naive. I feel so much betrayal for everyone in this story. Yes I realize that Tom may be a villian also but what was he supposed to do? Good thing he wasn’t upfront with Marion about what was actually happening cuz she would’ve just ratted them out earlier.
On a lighter note, I agree. Harry fits Toms role very well in my opinion. His mannerisms, the slow way he talks and is careful with his words and seems to just take in information and process it with not much verbalization, is literally Harry. I’m so excited to see him play such a complex character!
Overall, this story was told In a very interesting way and I liked how it slowly came together. Lots of emotions. Im just mostly heartbroken for everyone because nobody got their happy ending, which I guess happens in life more often than not. I’m gonna be thinking about this book for a while

came here just after finishing it just because i need to talk about it haha
it was really beautiful, but i cant help being a bit disappointed. i expected really great things (yes mostly because harry styles is in the film adaptation) and i dont think this book met those expectations.
i found every single character (apart from Julia) pretty unlikeable which makes it hard to really love and connect with this book.
First, there's the obvious one; Marion does horrible, horrible things and doesnt show any real remorse for the hurt she's caused other people, only caring when her harmful actions affected herself and her life. I understand the way this book is mostly written from her perspective that we are made to empathise with her, especially in the first half, but she refuses to change her outlook on gay people even right at the end, which is just not a good ending at all, no character development
Tom, whilst being the main focus, never got to show us his side of the story, and thats a shame because i really wanted to understand his character and his actions. whilst he's in an incredibly difficult position, being gay in the 50s, he's extremely careless with Marion's feelings. even though she's a bad person, that doesn't condone tom being bad to her. he was also horrible to Patrick when he needed him most in the 90s, and i found it really hard to believe that the man you loved and still love who is living in your home is so easily put aside. tom never really showed the love he had for patrick in the 90s when he had all the privacy he'd wanted and especially since patrick was dying. tom was cruel and kind of callous, i liked him at first but just not at all by the end.
Patrick is the only one who isnt particularly bad in my opinion, just not explored in enough depth and has some questionable motives. he really was put across as only wanting sex with tom at first, and even if thats not true, some of his phrases written in his diary just irked me. i just think there werent enough scenes where tom and patrick's love for eachother were shown because that wouldve made this whole book a lot better.

Really... you think she was the victim? The point of the book is that Tom and Patrick were the victims of institutionalized discrimination. They shouldn't have had to decide between having a life and loving someone. The way Tom treated her was wrong, but it's not his fault that being gay was literally a crime, or that he was expected to have a wife and all that. She had to have known something was off, but she chose do deny it because she was being selfish. You say it was wrong of him to hide it from her, but what's the first thing she did when she found out? His fears were legitimate and she proved that point. And I'm not saying she was the villain either. Neither of them were. I just hope you can see the issue of making the straight woman the victim in a book about homophobia.

Thanks for your video! I feel like I need to talk to someone after reading this book! I haven't even touched another book after reading it because I was so devastated and heartbroken. To be completely honest, I hated the characters but love them to bits at the same time. My heart goes for everyone in this book specially to Tom and Patrick who were victims of unjust institutionalized discrimination. I love their chemistry and secret rendezvous but at the same time, I felt horribly sick of what they did to Marion (I know I said I like reading their escapades but it was just sad, you know?). But the thing is, I couldn't give any more sympathy to Marion other than I hate seeing her being cheated on. She wanted that picture-perfect family with Tom and in return, she became selfish with her actions which in a way I was a bit glad that everything backfired to her. Also, I felt that she was only in love with the idea of Tom. Overall, I adore the story and I do agree with you that I can easily see Harry Styles as Tom and Emma Corrin playing Marion. I can't wait for the movie and I'm crossing my fingers that the execution will be good!

Yes! You described it perfectly. I saw many people in the comments saying that Tom is the worst person…but I don’t think he is…I felt sorry for him just like I did for Marion and Patrick. It was a really bad situation and Tom was so scared. The moment after the wedding when they did the slide thing I thought ‘Wow…he’s facing his other fear (fear of heights) just so he doesn’t have to face the other one (sleeping with Marion)‘ I think that said a lot about him…They all did some shitty things but that made them so real and so vulnerable. So no I don’t think that any of the characters was a bad person but maybe that’s just me trying to understand them on a psychological level.

I felt no sympathy for her at all, even though it wasn't a nice situation for her and I feel bad for people this has happened to in real life. But she was just a cruel, small-minded and selfish person who deliberately ruined someone's life and broke her husband in the process as well. And her pov took up most of the book, she was such a boring protagonist as well. It was a true struggle to get through this book, I was only reading to have it over with by the end.

This book was loosely based on EM Foster and policeman Bob Buckingham. It was originally going to be billed that way, but for some reason all references were removed. There are a few differences in how Buckingham’s wife May handled the situation. In this story Tom was using Marion to help promote himself on the force and have a beard. I did not feel the love between Tom and Patrick at all. I felt Tom used Patrick because he wanted sex and to be exposed to money, art and culture. (After Patrick he just had “anonymous sex”) and Patrick was centered on how unspoiled and physically attractive Tom was. Neither seemed to really care about each other. When Patrick went away all Tom could cry about was “what about me?”. And Patrick didn’t care about Marion. He was clear that he didn’t care whether Tom had a wife or girlfriend as long as he didn’t have a “lover”. Very selfish people. I thought this book was going to make me feel sad for the fact they had to hide their love, but the only love I felt was self centered in both parts. Tom should have just gone into a different profession and his lifestyle would have been much easier to pull off. He deserved what he got for what he did to Marion. I would have liked to have seen her leave him after Italy and go off with Julia. She sacrificed way too much for someone who did not deserve her.

I want to share a little theory I have on this book. It might not be true at all, but I love having my own interpretations on books and their endings. Sooo here it goes. I think Julia had feelings for Marion all along, but Marion never noticed or even knew she was a lesbian. I think Marion wants to visit Julia at the end to, not only hear her story, but maybe also live her own romance. Marion might be bisexual and finally have her own love life with Julia at the end. A love life she has always wanted, but never got. Now that she has finally left Tom, she can start her own life and do all the things she never got to do. Their friendship was beautiful and pure, and Julia was the type of person Marion always looked up to and wanted to be like. This actually is a common misunderstanding amongst lesbians: the struggle of not knowing if you want to BE them or be WITH them. I don't know. Just something I randomly thought about while reading the book. Probably not true at all, but it would be rather interesting.

The book destroyed me, they change the characters in the film, they make tom more "heterosexual" when in the book he is clearly homosexual even his family members know, in the film they tried to.make it look more like a love triangle when it was clear that tom and patrick were in love with eo and he never had romantic feeling for marion, patrick its more manipulative and marion is not innocent like in the film cause she already knew but was so obsessed with tom kinda creepy i wish the book wpuld tell us more from patrick point of view we know nothimg about him for 40 years what did he do?

  • @brendaframa2320

Marion was the most delulu person she tought with Patrick out of the game Tom would love her but instead she got a sexless life, living bittet like roomates lmao im glad she deserved it, if Patrick were still around probably they would even have had kids, Patrick was the one holding that fake marriage, Tom seeing him was the only thing making him deal with it ince he was gone everything collapsed in his world he didnt give a shit about nothing else and its funny cause didnt even know it was marions fault and still treated her like shit now imagine if he knew! And marion was never a victim he knew how tom was sulvie tild him but he was so delulu and obsessed with him thinking he could change him lol and she didnt stay with him to protect his reputation she did it for herself she wanted him only for herself. All three characters were selfish af but i loved Patrick i wish we had more of him in the book.

one of the saddest book i've ever read. tbh i've been team marion the whole time, b/c patrick seems mean and hypocritical to me (his comments about marion in his diary makes me uncomfortable.. it's my personal feeling tho). i feel so bad for marion, she is the most relatable character in the book to me

cant believe people have this opinion!! its really interesting to me. you dont sort of hate her for ruining patricks life and therefore toms life??

@@bethb8653 omg a comment from a year ago?? lmao. i can't remember the details very well but i guess it was my personal bias as a straight woman, as i can imagine myself doing the same thing. and i felt judged by patrick's comments. anyway this is a fabulous book for sure and i appreciate any other opinions about it!!

A bit late but I don't hate nor love any of the characters. We are seeing the story from Marionand Patrick's sides. She has been in love since she was 12, her view is skewed. We can see this on how different her views of the firatvmeeting with Patrick has gone compared to his. Same with Patrick's point of view. So, yes, Toma wanted the cake and to eat it it too, but he had 2 people that were telling him it could happen, when in reality both wanted the idealised version of him.

WOW , Thank u so much , A question does the Book have sexuel contents ?

    • @nikkisbooknook
      @nikkisbooknook  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

There is definitely some sexual content, but most is left to the imagination once things get going if you know what I mean! Definitely not 50 shades level or anything like that.
