Laugh of the day..my daughter literally cleaned mine. Came outside to find all my gardening tools in her play house soap bucket. "Ma I'm cleaning up for you." I didnt know whether to cry or laugh. In the end I gave her a hug. Cheeky little miss then asks does she get extra allowance? 😂 Great video and much appreciated. Stay warm, and blessed! 🙏
@@cinderellie8 No doubt friend. She loves to get in the garden. She comes banging out the back door in her overalls and rubber boots yelling maaaa I'm coming! She jumps on her electric john deere ride on and down the garden row she comes with her water can and mini hand rake in her trailer 🤣. "Big work" as she calls it. "Rotten worms ma!" And has a cut worm dangling from her hand. She's not to fond of vinegar but who knows what 5 bucks can sweeten the deal lol
Loved the humor of having to make those extra trips through the snow to get the "forgotten" items. That makes the video infinitely more relateable than an airbrushed, "perfect" know-it-all video. 💖
I did this to my rusty pruners. It was one of the most satisfying things I've ever done! They looked like brand new after, and the original carbon black color was restored! 👍
Looking forward to finding buried tools. Also try heating tool with veg oil applied with 250 infrared heat bulb. Also a Dremel tool could process cam polish surface before applying veg oil.
Evapo-Rust is indeed great, and not too expensive. Butcher block oil (mineral oil, bees wax, carnauba wax) is also good for a non-toxic rust preventative.
Thanks Michael! I used to because I also used to sell retail out of it and the farmstand in the front yard. Got to be too much, but might go that route again. Few things in the works but always such limited time you know....
Thanks Jeff! Ive had this happen to a couple of garden tools, which I ended up just throwing away 😢 - i will try your method next time ❤ thanks again friend
Love this 😊 Living by the beach in NZ, an absent minded moment leaving my trusty tools out overnight after a productive day in the garden even in summer, let alone bicycles 😅 is tough on the rust situation. Finding out that a pantry staple can save me time, money and self cringe factor is so enlightening. Thank so much ripe tomato farms, fantastic content yet again 😎💖
Hello. Joe from Springfield Missouri. I found out I have TH-cam on my TV! I’ve been watching you & a few others . In the beginning of your video I see your kids. I thought if you did a video with your kids teaching them how to plant. Plus it would be great seeing the hole family ( WIFE ) included in the garden planting some veggies.
Thanks Jeff, I also recently found out about using vineger as a rust remover. I only sharpen one side at a 30 degree angle and get a better cut but that is just how I like it. Keep up the good work and happy gardening!!
I like using 100% Pure Tsubaki Japanese Cutlery Knife Maintenance Camellia Oil. A bit pricier than vegetable oil, but a little goes a long way and works well.
No matter how well prepared I think I am for that particular cleaning chore, I make that walk of shame of forgetfulness. lol Vinegar is nature's antiseptic and a good thing to always have on hand. Any pots or buckets I will be re-using the next year, get a good wipe down with vinegar to freshen them and remove most of the risk of disease for my future seeds or cuttings. My emptied fabric grow bags get a good wash and then a rinse in a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water then left to air dry in the sun. May seem excessive (or so my husband says) but I invest so much time and care into growing food, I want to give my plants every chance of success. Too much of a gardener's life is at the mercy of that which we cannot control. lol
I can't believe you made this video; and so timely. GREAT video & now I feel like I can prepare well for Spring! I've always felt like such a negligent & bad person who would lose my 'extensions' only to find them later in the yard. I am glad to know it's a common phenomenon (based on the Likes!). Silly question: Can I use Olive, Sesame, Almond, or Avocado oils? I have all the oils apparently...except vegetable.
After you forgot the wrench, I saw what was coming! Thought it was awesome! That's what I would do, forget stuff. I do have a question. Would it be better to sharpen the tool and then do the oil? That way the new part of the metal has oil on it too. Does that make sense? I am thinking of trying this with a rusty shovel. Put the vinegar in an ice clean bucket and put the shovel in there overnight. It's only the tip so it should be okay. One more thing, what do you do with the rusty vinegar when you're done? Where can I dispose of it?
Obviously not for garden tools but old motor oil works wonders for old seized up pneumatics and hand tools. Just leave them in the bucket over night. Old oil works better because it's been worked and exposed to gas or diesel.
Did you have a video using hydrogen peroxide for various purposes? I think I remember that you used it to do a quick cleaning of your pruners. It does remove rust as well, correct?
For all you mechanical novices, take a pic of your pruners/snips/tool before you take it apart. It will be your reference when you put it back together.
I was shocked when my Dads tools rusted? 😢 Then I caught him, when he was in assisted living, polishing his tools with WD40. LoL. He asked me to bring him WD40 and a cloth and he began polishing his tools.

Ha ha oh no! Well, at least they'll smell nice and be "clean"!

You can teach her how to do it right and then give her extra

Thanks Laurie! The exasperation was real, lol! But then again I also doubled the work by setting up the camera to film it, ha ha!
Agreed! I kept hearing the Charlie Brown "dejected" theme song (humorously) in my head.

It really is satisfying Steve....not just the more money/less waste thing, but also the satisfaction of the results!
I learn something every time I watch you. Good stuff.
Hey thanks, that means a lot. I do try to pack as much as I can in to each video.
All that's missing on your long, cold journeys to and fro is the Vince Guaraldi trio.
Bravo! 🙏👏

Ha ha no doubt.... Treasure finding all spring!
Wow lot of snow. Thank you.
Yeah, all in 24 hours....it was pretty crazy.
Salt in the vinegar helps a lot. Also evaporust is a really neat product and works well

Love the big sigh when you have to go back to the garage . . . You nailed that! Also, does your wife know you used her good casserole?
Ha ha real life sigh!! The dish......what dish......you saw nothing. -_- LOL

Here's hoping you don't have to!
Great tip! I didn't realize vinegar worked that well on rust.
Nice to see Rider Pride on Vancouver Island!

Fluid Film is non-toxic and my go-to for cleaning and storing my garden tools. Apply liberally and never worry about rusting in the future.

For long metal shears buy a cheap glass skinny case to fill up with your mix
Nice!
Hard to believe the same ingredient on my salad will spruce up my garden tools! Vinaigrette anyone?
That's a pretty nice dutch oven to be soaking rusty pruning shears in...just saying.😂 Great video by the way!
